Hi Movie Fans!

Welcome to our new subscribers! I had to go out of town yesterday
morning and expected to return much earlier than I did. This
resulted in no newsletter yesterday. I hope everyone had a good and
safe 4th of July!

I have one more 30 minute calling card from iTarget.com for anyone
who is the first to email me the correct answer to this weeks
Trivia Blitz. To fill the new subscribers in, the card is in 10
minute increments. If you win I will email you the access number
and codes.

Laurie went to see 'The Patriot' over the weekend and has written
us a review of it for our enjoyment. Sorry to some of you folks who
I know personally enjoy the DVD reviews, but although Laurie has
quite a few for us, we are only publishing 'The Patriot' today.

That was a perfect segway for me to remind everyone that we enjoy
your letters. We encourage you to get involved, whether that be
just emailing us to say hi, or feedback, or submitting a review.
Whatever the case may be I'm only an email away (Laurie too). :-)

Have a great week everyone!

- Bob

(Note from Laurie)
I forgot to mention Sunday that Universal/MCA has announced the DVD
release date for American Beauty as October 24th nationwide. Also,
if anyone wants to know when a title will be released for either
DVD or VHS formats let me know and I'll contact the studios through
work and find out for you.

It's Showtime!

2. IN THE NEWS
================================================

BATTLEFIELD SEQUEL
Despite the film's poor box office performance and negative
critical reaction, plans may still be afoot for a sequel to
Battlefield Earth. The director of the first flop and John Travolta
remain in contact in discussing a sequel, and most of the crew
would be willing to return for a second film as well.

NEESON JOINING 'GANGS'?
Following up on weeks of rumors comes word that Liam Neeson is on
the verge of joining Leonardo DiCaprio, Cameron Diaz and Daniel Day
Lewis on Martin Scorsese's Gangs of New York project. While talking
to the Hollywood Reporter, Neeson revealed, "I am pretty sure I
will be in Gangs as the character who plays Leonardo DiCaprio's
father." Shooting is scheduled to start next month in Rome.

CROWE CASTED IN FOSTER FLICK
"Gladiator" star Russell Crowe, who won acclaim for "L.A.
Confidential" and an Oscar nomination for "The Insider" is set to
start filming a movie directed by Jodie Foster in central Florida
in September. Crowe, 36, will co-star with Claire Danes in "Flora
Plum," set in a circus during the Depression. Crowe will play a
circus freak who takes a starving young woman, played by Danes,
under his wing.

STAR TREK X GETS IT'S WRITER
It's been reported that John Logan ("Gladiator") will be the one to
scribe the 10th movie script. Logan is said to be "a lifelong Star
Trek fan and jumped at the chance to pen this one." It's also been
reported that the cast of Next Generation would return if the
money's right, despite the fact they've fulfilled their contracts
for three films.

HUGHES HELMS REVOLUTION FLICK
John Hughes (Pretty in Pink, Home Alone) is committed to write,
direct, and produce an untitled romantic comedy for Joe Roth's
Revolution Studios. The film is described as "a modern Cinderella
Story that's set in Chicago." Hughes is also in talks to direct a
new "Breakfast Club" movie.

MARSHALL COMMITS TO 'DIARIES'
Garry Marshall will direct an adaptation of Meg Cabot's upcoming
novel "The Princess Diaries". The story involves a rebellious
16-year-old New York girl who learns she is the princess of a small
European country.

X-MEN SEQUEL
An X-Men sequel may already be in the works. The first film opens
nationwide on July 14, but Patrick Stewart said in a recent
interview that if there is a sequel he is already committed to it.

PALTROW, MEET HAL
Gwyneth Paltrow has signed on to star in the upcoming Farrely
Brothers movie, Shallow Hal. Hal tells the story of a man who, at
the age of twelve, is advised by his father to date only beautiful
women. The man follows his father's advice until one day he meets
and falls in love with a very plain woman played by Paltrow.
Shallow Hal is scheduled for U.S. release in the summer of 2002.

REITMAN COMMITS TO 'EVOLUTION' FLICK
Ivan Reitman (Ghostbusters) will direct EVOLUTION, a sci-fi comedy
about a rapidly-evolving single-celled organism that crash lands on
Earth.

HOPE RECOVERING WELL
Bob Hope has returned to his Toluca Lake estate and is doing well a
month after emergency hospitalization for gastrointestinal
bleeding, his daughter said. "He seems to be enjoying being back in
town and is doing well," Linda Hope said Thursday when asked about
her 97-year-old father.

HULK HOGAN DOES POLITICAL ADS
A political advertising campaign using wrestler Hulk Hogan to pitch
a development project to the people of Clearwater has one major
flaw: Hogan resides just outside the city limits and isn't eligible
to vote in the referendum on the plan. It turns out Hogan lives
about a block south of the Clearwater city limits, even though he
says in the commercial, "My family and I have made Clearwater our
home for more than 12 years."

BECKER MAY DIRECT 'DISTURBANCE'
Reports are that Harold Becker (City Hall) is in negotiations to
direct the John Travolta thriller "Domestic Disturbance."

SCULLY CO-STAR NAMED
Scully's new partner to replace the half season of air time
Duchovny won't be onset will be Chris Noth, better known as 'Mr.
Big' on Sex and the City. Shooting on the new season begins within
the next month or so.

ELIAN GONZALEZ - MADE FOR TV MOVIE
It's only been a week since Elian Gonzalez arrived back in his
native Cuba after seven months of living in the United States, but
production has begun on the first of two fact-based
made-for-television movies. "The Elian Gonzalez Story" started
filming Wednesday in and around Los Angeles and will continue
through Friday. The telefilm is based on the seven-year-old's
rescue at sea and will air on the Fox Family Channel later this
year. CBS's version will be a four-hour miniseries on the drama
surrounding Elian and the custody battle between his father and
relatives.

P&G TO PULL 'MTV' ADS
Procter & Gamble, one of the nation's largest advertisers, will no
longer run advertisements on two racy series on MTV. MTV's "The Tom
Green Show" and "Undressed" were already on a list of programs on
which P&G would not advertise, P&G spokeswoman Gretchen Briscoe
told the Colorado Springs Gazette for Sunday's edition. Her
comments come three weeks after P&G officials met with conservative
Christian leader James Dobson, who tried to persuade the executives
to reverse a decision to pull advertising from the upcoming
television talk show "Dr. Laura." Company guidelines say that its
decisions to advertise are "based on what's acceptable to the
majority of our consumers and what we judge to be in good taste."

'SURVIVOR' PLAYERS CASHING IN
Suffering through weeks of roasted rat and cutthroat competition is
beginning to pay for "Survivor" contestants: They're making deals
for commercials and product endorsements. Dirk Been, bounced off
the island on this week's episode, signed a contract to appear in
ads for an herbal remedy sold by a California couple. Retired Navy
SEAL Rudy Boesch is said to be making a deal with a knife company.
Some contestants have retained agents to sort through the offers
that have piled up as the show's popularity increased. CBS also has
a say in what the players do because of a contract each signed with
the network. CBS spokesman Chris Ender said the network is "setting
up a system to manage these requests in a way that helps the
survivors capitalize on their fame but still protects the
'Survivor' brand."

3. MOVIE REVIEW - DVD
================================================

Edited by Laurie

THE PATRIOT - Mel Gibson, Heath Ledger, Joely Richardson
Ok. I admit it. I only went to see this movie because Mel Gibson
is in it. I didn't care about the plot or the other actors or the
really bad reviews it's gotten, just Mel. Turns out, I really liked
the movie as well as the actor. The story revolves around a man who
decides not to fight for the new America because he has 7 children
to protect. As the story progresses, he's drawn into the war with
England, a battle with a blood-thirsty tyrant, and the pain of
losing those closest to him. I've read reviews recently that said
that the savagery depicted in the film never really happened. None
of that bothered me at all because I was so drawn to the bond
shared between Mel and his children. Some of the scenes were
savage, yes, but it only enhanced the fact that this man would let
nothing stop him from protecting his children, getting revenge, and
finally, leading the charge for a free country. This moving story
was beautifully directed and edited with excellent acting by all
the major players and despite it's two and a half hour length, I
never wondered what time it was. Overall the movie was very well
done...I laughed, I cried, and the audience actually cheered in a
couple of places. I'm definitely looking forward to the DVD.

4. CELEBRITY PROFILE
==========
Winona Ryder
================================================
Birth Name: Winona Laura Horowitz
Born: October 29, 1971 - Winona, Minnesota, USA

Winona Ryder was named after the town in which she was born, Winona
Minnesota. She grew up in a ranch commune in Northern California
where there was no electricity. She is the Goddaughter of Timothy
Leary. She moved with her parents to Petaluma (near San Francisco)
when she was ten and enrolled in acting classes at the American
Conservatory Theater. At 13 she had a video audition to the film
Desert Bloom (1986), but didn't get the part. Director David
Seltzer, however, spotted her and cast her in Lucas (1986). When
telephoned to ask how she'd like to have her name appear on the
credits, she suggested Ryder as her father's Mitch Ryder album was
playing the background. Ryder was selected for the part of Mary
Corleone in Godfather: Part III, The (1990), but had to drop out of
the role after catching the flu from the strain of doing the films
Welcome Home, Roxy Carmichael (1990) and Mermaids (1990) back to
back. She said she didn't want to let everyone down by doing a
substandard performance. Others have suggested that she pulled out
from the part because of problems with boyfriend Johnny Depp, with
whom she had been going out since she was 17. Depp got a tattoo
saying "Winona Forever" put on his biceps. She's also dated David
Duchovny, Christian Slater, a few musicians, and is currently
rumored to be engaged to Matt Damon. Winona Ryder was set to film
Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) as a TV movie with Michael Apted, but
took the script to Francis Ford Coppola and he agreed to film it.
She later made Age of Innocence, The (1993) which was directed by
Martin Scorsese, who she believes to be "the best director in the
world". She recently appeared, for the first time ever on any talk
show, on The Tonight Show to promote Girl, Interrupted. Ryder has
also appeared in numerous music videos including 'The Shoop Shoop
Song' for Cher from the Mermaids film.
