Hi Movie Fans!
A couple of weeks ago in Wednesdays edition of the newsletter we
ran a bio on Melanie Griffith and in that article we stated that
"Griffith has been married to Don Johnson twice which resulted in
no children." That was incorrect, Melanie and Don had one child
together, her name is Dakota. Thanks to reader Wendy W. for
informing us of the mistake.
To our U.S. readers..

3. IN THE NEWS

JUST A LITTLE DVD STUFF
I had my meeting for a wagon full of upcoming DVD releases
including Men In Black (all three versions), Toy Story 1 and 2,
Gladiator with Russell Crowe, Jaws, both Jurassic Park films, and
others. Paramount confirmed with me that they are working on The
Godfather DVD Trilogy, but since they want the special edition to
be top-notch, it won't be released in 2000. 20th Century Fox
announced that they are entering the DTS playground...True Lies,
Speed, and the Die Hard series will be the studios first releases.
Warner Brothers, who recently started putting out DTS titles, will
add the Batman series and others in the next few months. Spielberg
is working on Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T., Indiana
Jones Trilogy, and Schindler's List for DVD with DTS a possibility
for all releases. MGM/United Artists showed off the third and
final James Bond set and Universal/MCA gave me a list a mile long
of upcoming DTS titles. I'll have details of awesome special
features for DVDs I tested in Wednesdays newsletter.
SAD NEWS: ACTOR WALTER MATTHAU DIES AT 79
Academy Award-winning actor Walter Matthau, whose hangdog looks and
grouchy, slouchy demeanor transformed him from an early player of
straight-on toughs and bad guys into one of America's best-loved
comic film stars, died on Saturday of a heart attack. He was 79. We
at Movie Fever would like to express our condolences to the family
and friends of Mr. Matthau.
NORMAN LEAR WINS AUCTION
Veteran TV producer Norman Lear (All in the Family, Maude) has
purchased one of the last privately owned original copies of the
Declaration of Independence for $7.4 million. Auction house
Sothebys.com did not name Lear as the buyer but sources close to
him confirmed that he was the buyer.
THIS IS THE MOST DEPRESSING THING I'VE SEEN IN AWHILE
Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan, one of Hollywood's more stable and
successful celebrity couples, have split up. The acting duo,
married for nine years, decided six weeks ago on the split, which
their publicist described as "mutual and amicable." The publicist
gave no mention on whether Ryan and Quaid, who have a 7-year-old
son, plan to divorce. Gladiator star Russell Crowe is rumored to
be the new man in Meg Ryan's life. Crowe and Ryan grew close while
working together on the upcoming romantic drama Proof of Life. "Meg
and Russell are extremely close and incredibly fond of each other,"
an unnamed source says. "They just click. She feels young again and
they've been having a wonderful time in London."
DEPRESSED DOWNEY MAKES 8 CENTS AN HOUR
Robert Downey Jr. says in the August issue of Vanity Fair that he's
"sinking further" into depression as he serves a three-year prison
sentence for drug possession. Imprisoned since August 1999 at the
California Substance Abuse Facility and State Prison in Corcoran,
Downey shares a cell with four other inmates and earns eight cents
an hour working in the prison kitchen. "Sometimes I'm just dead....
I'm ready to get out," he tells the magazine. Downey, who adds that
he's been drug-free since June 1999, could be released as early as
November after time off for good behavior.
FLETCH LIVES AGAIN: YET ANOTHER MOVIE FOR AFFLECK
Kevin Smith is bringing back Fletch to the big screen. Miramax has
optioned the rights to Gregory McDonald's 11-book series, and Smith
will write and direct the first Fletch film in more than a decade,
likely to be Fletch Won. "It's the story of how Fletch became
Fletch," Smith, a self-proclaimed "huge fan" of the books, told the
Reporter. "Off the top of my head, I'm leaning towards Ben Affleck
[for the title role]. Or Jason Lee. We'll also see if we can get
Chevy Chase involved."
MICHAEL DOUGLAS'S WORK OF "ART"
MGM has optioned the Peter Landesman investigative article "Art Con
of the Century" for Douglas to star in and produce. Playwright
David Henry Hwang (M. Butterfly) will pen the script. Douglas would
play John Drewe, a debonair gent who, for nine years in the '80s
and '90s, paid John Myatt to paint classic knockoffs, then peddled
200 of the "works" as the real thing, forging declarations of
authenticity along the way. Scotland Yard nabbed Drewe after
getting Myatt to confess; Drewe is currently serving a six-year
term.
NEW PROJECT FOR CLOONEY
Clooney has teamed up with Steven Soderbergh to co-produce The
Jacket, which involves a murder frame job, Vietnam and time travel.
No release date yet.
MAKING MOVIE MAGIC
Basketball legend and failed talk-show host Magic Johnson is
preparing a Friday opening for his new nine-screen movie multiplex
in Harlem, NY. Johnson and Loews Cineplex Entertainment are already
partnered in theaters in Los Angeles, Houston, Atlanta and
Cleveland. Let's hope he has better luck than funnyman Jerry Lewis,
whose self-named chain of movie theaters went under several years
ago.
PERFECT STORM AUCTION
Lady Grace, the sister vessel to the Andrea Gail used in the
filming of The Perfect Storm, is going up for auction on eBay. A
portion of the proceeds from the sale of the boat will benefit The
Gloucester Fund, which serves the communities affected by the
real-life storm that inspired the new George Clooney film.
PARK AND NEILL
Sam Neill has officially signed on to reprise his role of Dr. Alan
Grant in the third "Jurassic Park" film, the first major actor
onboard. Alessandro Nivola, best known as Nic Cage's imprisoned
brother Pollux in 1997's "Face/Off" is currently in negotiation to
join the 18-week shoot scheduled to begin filming in about a month.
PIE ANYONE??
Universal Studios has just officially committed to make a sequel to
last year's comedy "American Pie" with most of the crew and
on-screen talent (Jason Biggs, Chris Klein, Seann W. Scott, Shannon
Elizabeth) more than likely to return.
D AND D NEWS
Fans of Dungeons & Dragons can breathe easy: the movie based on the
popular role-playing game is finally ready to hit theaters and will
see release in either November or December of this year or Memorial
Day 2001.
HOPKINS IN ATLANTIS
Even as he continues his work in Hannibal, word has it that Anthony
Hopkins may star in the big screen version of Stephen King's book
Hearts of Atlantis. Hopkins is currently in negotiations to,
perhaps, take on the role of Ted Brutigan, a lodger in the house of
10-year old Bobby Garfield. Ted, who has psychic abilities, claims
he is being hunted by monsters. His relationship with the boy also
gives the youngster some of his psychic powers which allows Bobby
insight into his own mother's troubled life.
DARKO AND WYLE
Noah Wyle is the most recent addition to the cast of Donnie Darko.
Wyle will play a high school physics teacher in the film that tells
the dark fantasy-science fiction story of a troubled high school
kid, to be played by Jake Gyllenhaal. Drew Barrymore, whose Flower
Films production company is making the film, will have a small role
in the film as a teacher as well. Shooting is set to start next
month with Richard Kelly helming.

WHAT A CATCH FOR 'SURVIVOR' SERIES RUDY
Castaway Rudy Boesch competing in a fishing tournament in his
hometown of Virginia Beach, had Saturday's largest catch when he
reeled in a 115-pound bluefin tuna after fighting the fish for more
than an hour. The event offered up to $2 million for anyone
catching a blue marlin larger than 1,000 pounds. If only he would
have caught it a few months earlier. No calls from PETA please.
SOPRANOS STARS WANT MORE $$$
Soprano stars Edie Falco and Lorraine Bracco want more bucks for
their respective roles as a mobster's wife and a mobster's shrink.
Sources said Falco, who won an Emmy for her role on the hit HBO mob
drama, and Bracco are seeking a per-episode increase to the mid
five-figure range by the time production on the new season begins
in early August. HBO is looking to make them an offer they can't
refuse...sorry...couldn't resist.
SEINFELD HITS THE ROAD
Multimillionaire funnyman Jerry Seinfeld doesn't seem to mind those
escalating gasoline prices. The comedian has loaded up a 1973
Volkswagen Beetle and is enjoying a long road trip from his New
York City home to Albuquerque, NM. On Tuesday, he reportedly took
in a show at the Bobby Vinton Theater in cheezy Branson, MO.
SCARY THOUGHT OF THE WEEK
FOX next year plans to debut a new hip-hop version of The Wizard of
Oz, tentatively titled The O.Z., starring Queen Latifah, Busta
Rhymes, Little Richard, Patti LaBelle and Ginuwine. The made for TV
movie will find Dorothy as a successful but lonely hip-hop music
producer in Los Angeles whose life is turned upside-down by an
earthquake.
FOX GREENLIGHTS WANTED
Brace yourself for Wanted, a new Fox reality series described as a
cross between The Fugitive, Survivor and Who Wants to Be a
Millionaire. The show, originally developed in Britain, will follow
three teams of runners trying to avoid capture by three teams of
trackers.
NBC GIVES ITSELF THE GOLD
The Summer Olympics in Sydney are still more than two months away,
but NBC already is pole-vaulting some lofty numbers into the air.
The network will cram no less than 441½ hours of Down Under Games
coverage (all of it tape-delayed). It also projects that 215
million viewers will tune in at some point over the two-plus weeks.
Cable operators, however, will have the choice of sticking with
regular CNBC and MSNBC programming.
WB's BABY DUE DATE
WB will trot out its bouncing Baby Blues July 28 at 8 pm/ET. The
half-hour cartoon is based on the comic strip of the same name and
centers around a twentysomething couple's (voices by Mike O'Malley
and Julia Sweeney) adventures in parenting. For Mr. O'Malley's
sake, let's hope this TV foray is a little more successful than his
last one.
USA LOSES WWF
A Delaware judge on Tuesday dismissed a lawsuit brought by USA
Networks to keep its top-rated World Wrestling Federation telecasts
from moving to Viacom/CBS-owned TNN when USA's contract expires
this September. The court decided that USA could not possibly match
Viacom-CBS's offer to further expand Vince McMahon's already huge
wrestling empire with broadcast network specials and other
promotional efforts.
ABC OK'S DAMON-AFFLECK SHOW
ABC has given a go-ahead to Oscar winners Matt Damon and Ben
Affleck (Good Will Hunting) to serve as executive producers on a
new reality series called The Runner. The series, which the network
says will debut later this season, will feature a single contestant
crossing the country while trying to avoid being identified by
viewers.
POST-SUPER BOWL SURVIVOR
It's still quite a ways off, but word has it CBS is already mapping
out plans to debut the second season of Survivor after the Super
Bowl on Jan. 28. CBS brass say no final decision has yet been made
on airdates for the Survivor sequel, which will be set in the
Australian outback. Meanwhile, Survivor junkies will be happy to
learn that CBS has decided to expand the first season's Aug. 23
final episode to two hours.
