3. IN THE NEWS
=======================================================

JIM CARREY OUT OF 'PHONE BOOTH'
Negotiations have broken off for Jim Carrey to star in Fox 2000's
thriller "Phone Booth," which will be directed by Joel Schumacher.
Carrey had committed earlier this month to starring in the role,
but sources said the deal was never done. The project is expected
to
start shooting this summer. The script for "Phone Booth," written
by Larry Cohen, has garnered the interest of a number of Hollywood
heavyweights, including Will Smith and Michael Bay.

WEAVER, HEWITT-CON ARTISTS
Sigourney Weaver and Jennifer Love Hewitt
will star as a mother-daughter con artist team in a movie named
after a trendy Palm Beach resort. "The Breakers," in which Weaver
and Hewitt fleece wealthy, lonely men out of their fortunes at the
five-star, seaside hotel, is set to begin filming in mid-July. The
women take aim on Gene Hackman, who plays the richest man in Palm
Beach.

NAOMI CAMPBELL OPENS UP
Cranky Naomi Campbell blames her bitchy behavior on lingering
resentment toward her father for abandoning her as a child. The
supermodel, 30, told Barbara Walters on Friday's episode of 20/20
that she also has "issues" with her mother. "I've not always
displayed my anger in the appropriate time. But it's a
manifestation of a deeper issue, I think. And that, to me, I think
is based on insecurity, self-esteem and loneliness."

PROTEST'S AGAINST CARREY FLICK
the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, which is so put off by
the "gross ignorance and insensitivity" to schizophrenics in the
Fox film, "Me, Myself and Irene," that it plans a national protest
against the movie, opening June 23.

STEPHEN KING THINKING ABOUT NEW WEB BOOK
Stephen King may release another book online, but wants to know
what people think of the idea first. "The Plant" is an unfinished
serial novel about a vampire vine that takes over the offices of a
paperback publishing company and offers financial success for human
sacrifices, King says on his Web site. King's assistant said the
novel may be posted online in a manner similar to "Riding The
Bullet," the author's recent e-book. People could read 5,000-word
installments on the Web site for free, then send King a check or
money order for $1. The offer would be limited to the first 50,000
who download the book. Unlike "Riding The Bullet," "The Plant"
could be downloaded to a printer.

ILM TO EXPAND ANIMATION
Industrial Light & Magic, the special effects powerhouse of George
Lucas, has announced that it plans to expand its animation
department, according to Variety. ILM will create a slate of new
computer-generated television shows and films as co-productions
with major studios. Special effects shops Digital Domain and Rhythm
& Hues have made similar announcements in the past year.

MORE ON THE SWAYZE PLANE ORDEAL
Three men were charged with lying Tuesday for allegedly failing to
tell police that they helped Patrick Swayze remove beer and wine
from his plane before driving him to a hotel after he made an
emergency landing. Swayze's publicist, Annett Wolf in Los Angeles,
denied there was alcohol on the plane. "It's unfortunate that there
were people there who felt the need to say what they said," Wolf
said.

SMITH IN POTTER PIC
It seems Smith is in talks to play Professor Minerva McGonagall in
the highly anticipated feature film version of J.K. Rowling's
best-seller "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," for Warner
Bros. and director Christopher Columbus. The studio confirmed
Monday that talks are ongoing with Smith, but at this stage, it is
not clear if the parties will be able to work out the dates.

CHRISTY'S SMOKIN' CONFESSION
Another supermodel speaking out is Christy Turlington. The
31-year-old model described her father's battle with lung cancer
while addressing a group of teenagers ar an anti-tobacco summit in
Florida. Turlington also recounted her own struggle to quit
smoking, explaining that she started smoking in her early teens and
didn't even stop after her father had a heart attack due to his
excessive puffing.

'JURASSIC' DVD AT A STORE NEAR YOU
Steven Spielberg has greenlit the Oct. 10 DVD release and VHS
re-release of his $1.5 billion blockbuster franchise "Jurassic
Park" and "The Lost World: Jurassic Park." The dynamic duo are two
of the most-requested Spielberg titles for the burgeoning DVD home
entertainment format and are expected to challenge Warner Home
Video's "The Matrix" as the best-selling DVD title of all time.

ODD COUPLE SEES SPOT RUN
How's this for an odd couple: Oscar nominee Michael Clarke Duncan
is in talks to team with wacky David Arquette in the comedy flick
See Spot Run. Duncan would play an FBI agent while Arquette would
play a mailman who takes care of an FBI drug-sniffing superdog.

STALLONE AND REYNOLDS ARE CHAMPS
Burt Reynolds and Sylvester Stallone are teaming up for their first
movie, a racing flick titled Champs, set to begin filming in July.
Stallone also wrote the script. Reynolds plays a wheelchair-bound
former driver and Renny Harlin will direct.

SHAFT STAR HITS THE MAT
Shaft star Samuel L. Jackson is entering the wrestling ring. The
actor will appear on an upcoming episode of UPN's WWF Smackdown.

DONNY & MARIE GET THE AX
One bad apple don't spoil the whole bunch, girl, but one bad
ratings book killed the syndicated talk show Donny & Marie. The
Osmonds' talker won't be back for a third season due to poor
performance in key demographic groups during May sweeps.

MIDLER MOVES TO L.A.
Bette Midler is no longer in a New York state of mind. The diva's
upcoming CBS series, Bette!, will not tape in New York, as
previously announced. However, if the series makes it to a second
season there is a good chance production could shift back to New
York.

MATTHEW PERRY'S EMMY NIGHTMARE
Poor Matthew Perry can't get a break. Hot on the heels of nasty
rumors that he needs a liver transplant comes word that he is
withdrawing himself from Emmy consideration, ostensibly because his
publicists submitted him in the wrong category. The Friends star
submitted himself in the lead-actor category for this year's Emmy
nominations - which was news to the troubled actor, since he was
under the impression he submitted himself in the supporting
category. Long story short: It's too late for Perry's people to
switch categories, so the funnyman just called the whole thing off.

BRIAN DENNEHY GOES ON TRIAL
Brian Dennehy (Tommy Boy, Broadway's Death of a Salesman) has been
tapped to host the syndicated series Arrest & Trial. A&T, a weekday
reality show from the creators of Law & Order, debuts Oct. 2.

POPULAR CREATOR'S BIG DEAL
Popular creator/executive producer Ryan Murphy just got a lot more
popular. The auteur just signed a two-year deal with Warner Bros.
Television to write, develop and produce half-hour and hourlong
programs. No word yet on projects in the works.

FLORENCE HENDERSON, OUT OF WORK?
Florence Henderson and the girls of Later Today might get the ax
when NBC's Today adds an extra hour in the fall. An NBC
spokesperson says the show will air on NBC-owned stations in
September, but insiders say Later Today staffers have been told to
send out their résumés and look for otherwork.

ABC ORDERS MORE BLUE
ABC has renewed NYPD Blue through May 2002, probably for 20
episodes per season. "It's a real show of faith and trust in us and
our staying power," series honcho Steven Bochco says.

PETA PROTESTS CBS 'SURVIVOR' SERIES
Eight demonstrators from People for the Ethical Treatment of
Animals, one of them dressed in a giant rat suit, protested outside
of a CBS office Friday because the contestants on "Survivor"
roasted rats and ate them. The protesters chanted, "Rats have
rights! Survive on veggies!" "You have people who think it's fun to
trap rats, cut off their legs, skin them and eat them," said
RaeLeann Smith of PETA. "There's nothing funny about that. It's
disgusting." The rodent dining experience was a part of this week's
episode of the adventure game show, which has been a big summer hit
for CBS. More than 23 million people watched on Wednesday night.

ALLY HONCHO WANTS TO MAKE MUSIC
David E. Kelley, the Emmy-winning Ally McBeal honcho, is in talks
with Sony Music to cut a deal for a third Ally soundtrack album. As
part of the deal, Kelley is asking for his own record label
imprint. One scenario could see wacky Ally regular Lisa Nicole
Carson recording for Kelley's label.

SEX AND THE CITY FIREFIGHTER FLAP
A New York City firefighter in hot water with FDNY officials for
his hunka-hunka burnin' love scene in the red-hot season premiere
of Sex and the City had department approval for his racy role.
Strapping Staten Island firefighter Michael Lombardi, 38, is under
fire following his steamy guest role as Ricky, one of the city's
Bravest who beds Kim Cattrall's character,
Samantha, in an episode that aired June 4. "Lombardi gained
permission from the fire department to appear in the show. The
department knew what his role was going to be and approved it, so
why is he in trouble?" a source said. However, fire commissioner
Thomas Von Essen said Lombardi, a 12-year veteran assigned to an
elite rescue unit, is under investigation for discrediting the fire
department.

NO MORE LIFETIME ON FOX
Bad news if you missed the Fox game show It's Your Chance of a
Lifetime: there are no additional episodes planned for the show,
which aired last week. It seems the cause of death was low, low
ratings, which means host Gordon Elliott will have to find new
doors on which to knock.

*****STAGE*****
GRAMMER PUTS HIS MONEY WHERE HIS MOUTH IS
Say what you will about Kelsey Grammer's decision to tackle Macbeth
on Broadway, the man has the courage of his convictions - and the
money to pay for them. Not only is Grammer playing the title role
in this revival, which opened recently at the Music Box, he is a
last-minute creditor whose deep pockets saved the troubled
production from closing out of town. In an interview with the New
York Post yesterday, the actor confirmed he lent his producers, SFX
Theatrical Group, a substantial amount of money to help get Macbeth
to Broadway. The loan, Grammer said, does not have to be repaid if
the production fails to recoup its $1.5 million investment.

MORGAN FAIRCHILD'S INFIDELITY
Here's another odd couple: Morgan Fairchild and John Davidson are
teaming up for the off-Broadway comedy High Infidelity, opening in
July. The two play a senator and his wife who have to try to
salvage their marriage for political reasons.

ROSEANNE KID HITS THE STAGE
Her TV mom is threatening to go nude on the Internet, but former
Roseanne kid Sarah Gilbert is going the high road, hitting the
stage next month. The actress, currently
seen in High Fidelity, will star in The Hot L Baltimore at the
Williamstown (MA) Theatre Festival in July.

The now-legendary animated series makes a big-screen splash with a
feature-length film which features the same crude animation but now
has the license to be as rude as it wants to be. Keep the kids away
and enjoy the episode of SOUTH PARK you always hoped you'd see!
Stan, Kyle, Kenny, and Cartman sneak into the R-rated Terrence and
Philip movie, and before you know it, their angry parents have
declared a war on Canada! A musical in disguise, the film features
many memorable songs as well as a touching relationship between
Saddam Hussein and Satan himself! The showstopping tune "Blame
Canada!" was nominated for a 1999 Academy Award for Best Song.
