AFI'S LIST OF AMERICAS 100 FUNNIEST MOVIES
Picking the 100 best comedies for the American Film Institute
(AFI), a blue-ribbon jury of 1,800 experts voted Billy Wilder's
1959 cross-dressing classic starring Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon and
Marilyn Monroe No. 1, followed in second place by "Tootsie", the
1982 film in which Dustin Hoffman plays an actor who cannot get
work as a man but stars as a woman. For the full list visit

FYI TO ALL WIZARD OF OZ FANS
I found out at work today that Wizard of Oz on VHS will be going on
indefinite moratorium in two weeks. This means that there will be
no more VHS tapes of this movie produced. The only ones available
will be what stores have left on their shelves. The DVD will
continue to be manufactured.

HOLLYWOOD ENTERTAINMENT CLOSING REEL.COM
Hollywood Entertainment said Monday it is pulling the financial
plug on its cash-draining Reel.com Web site before it drags down
the bricks-and-mortar foundation the company has built into the
nation's No. 2 video chain. Hollywood will maintain the Reel.com
site and its movie listings, but the site will forward orders for
videos and DVDs to another company at a separate Web site. David
Martin, chief financial officer for the Wilsonville-based company,
said it has gotten tougher to find financial backing for Internet
sites that keep spending huge amounts of money on building business
without showing a profit.

BEER REPORTED ON SWAYZE'S PLANE
Actor Patrick Swayze may have been carrying 30 bottles of beer
aboard his small plane when he was forced to make an emergency
landing earlier this month in northern Arizona, police said on
Tuesday.
Police said construction workers at a site near the crashed plane
had admitted carting away the beer bottles, 10 of which were empty
as well as a bottle of wine from the twin-engine Cessna piloted by
Swayze, who was uninjured in the landing about 90 miles north of
Phoenix. Police did not talk to Swayze until some nine hours after
he landed the plane, so it had been too long for police to conduct
a sobriety test.

ANDY GRIFFITH RECOVERING FROM HEART SURGERY
Actor Andy Griffith, best known as television's small-town sheriff
of Mayberry and later as TV lawyer Ben Matlock, is recovering from
open-heart surgery, a spokesman said on Tuesday.
Griffith, 74, underwent quadruple bypass surgery on May 9 "and is
now recuperating at home with his wife, Cindi."

JET LI GETS A NEW GIG
Action hero Jet Li and director Luc Besson are teaming up for a
big-screen project. The project will be a mix of The Professional
and Fist of Legend, and begins filming this fall.

BOBBY BROWN STAYS BEHIND BARS
Bobby Brown - husband of megastar Whitney Houston - will spend the
next 36 days cooling his heels in a Florida jail after admitting he
violated probation by failing to take a drug test. As he was being
led back to the Broward County jail yesterday, a downcast Brown
blamed it all on the booze. "To my fans, people who bought my
record and think I wasn't being a man about the situation, I do
have a disease - I have alcoholism," he said. Brown has been in the
jail near Fort Lauderdale since May 10 when he was picked up at
Newark (NJ) International Airport - returning from a Bahamas
vacation with Houston - on an outstanding warrant for
drunk-driving.

JIM CARREY UNDER FIRE
The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill is protesting Fox's new
comedy Me, Myself & Irene, starring Jim Carrey as a man with a
split personality. The nonprofit advocacy group claims the movie
and its marketing campaign show "gross ignorance and insensitivity"
toward people with mental illnesses and their families.

THREE STARS RECEIVE GOOD ADVICE
Add Angie Harmon, Rosanna Arquette and Jon Lovitz to the diverse
cast of the flick Good Advice. The trio are in negotiations to
appear in the film, which stars Charlie Sheen as a Wall Street
trader who loses client Denise Richards's money.

BIG NEWS FOR BLUE'S CLUES
Hot on the heels of the news that the Powerpuff Girls are leaping
to the big screen comes word that Blue's Clues's first
feature-length flick, Blue's Big Musical Movie, premieres this fall
exclusively on video and DVD. The opus features six new songs, and
the DVD version contains a behind-the-scenes look at the show
especially for parents.

MAGGIE SMITH IS MINERVA?
Esteemed British thespian Maggie Smith is in talks to play
Professor Minerva McGonagail in the film version of Harry Potter
and the Sorcerer's Stone. Warner Bros. has confirmed that Smith is
under consideration for the role, but nothing is set in stone.

MARK WAHLBERG GETS CRIMINAL
Busy Mark Wahlberg is in conversations to star in the new movie
Criminal Conversations as a mob boss who falls for a district
attorney's wife. The actor is also set to join George Clooney and a
slew of other A-level stars in the remake of Ocean's 11.

DIALLO'S MOM WANTS TO MEET THE BOSS
Amadou Diallo's mother plans to thank Bruce Springsteen in person
for his controversial song recognizing her son's shooting at the
hands of New York City police - at The Boss's Madison Square Garden
concert. "Of course I would like to meet with him," Kadiatou Diallo
said yesterday. "He's here for 10 days; we will have time for
that." Diallo said it would be great to hear Springsteen do the
song - "American Skin" - in person. "It keeps his memory alive,"
she said of her slain son. Without mentioning Diallo by name, the
song references key elements of the case - "41 shots," a person
lying dead in a vestibule and confusion over whether something is a
knife, gun or wallet.

JESSICA LANGE LASHES OUT
Jessica Lange is taking aim at Hollywood's penchant for
commercialism and casting aging action heroes opposite ingenues.
"I'd like to point out one of the best things about being 50 in
this industry, and that is the absolute concrete assurance that
women my age will never be considered for a role in one of those
macho, airhead, testosterone action films - and for that I am
grateful," she said Friday at the 24th annual Women in Film
luncheon.

CLEA DUVALL GOES TO MARS
Sassy actress Clea DuVall might be moving to Mars. DuVall is in
talks to star opposite Courtney Love and Ice Cube in the upcoming
flick John Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars. Production is slated to
begin in August in New Mexico.

VAN DER BEEK'S SUMMER VACATION
Now we know what James Van Der Beek is doing on his summer
vacation: He's starring in writer/director Todd Solondz's untitled
film. The flick also stars Selma Blair and Heather Matarazzo, and
Van Der Beek plays a cold, sophisticated big man on campus.
There's a stretch.

BUZZ LIGHTYEAR'S EARLY YEARS
Disney and Pixar are releasing a straight-to-video prequel to the
Toy Story flicks Aug. 8, titled Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The
Adventure Begins. The flick is a traditional cartoon rather than a
computer-generated production like its two predecessors.

CHRISTIAN SLATER TALKING WIND
Christian Slater is set to join Nicolas Cage in John Woo's
Windtalkers, a fact-based flick about soldiers guarding
spy-cracking Navajo Indians during World War II. The picture begins
shooting in July in Hawaii, and Cage and Slater play the
aforementioned soldiers.

'N SYNC'S PRIVATE PARTY
Boy group 'N Sync broke from their sellout American tour to sing at
a private bat mitzvah party. Rachel Colburn couldn't believe her
eyes when her favorite group pranced out at her bat mitzvah and did
a rousing 40-minute show. The 12-year-old guest of honor squealed
in delight as the hunky pop stars sang their biggest hits,
including "Bye Bye Bye" and "Tearin' Up My Heart." The group signed
autographs and planted kisses on the cheeks of gushing girl fans
before making a fast getaway from the Beth Sholom Congregation in
Potomac, MD, last Sunday. Rachel's dad, AOL honcho David Colburn,
used his connections to hire the hotshot hitmakers.

BURGLARS TARGET MADONNA
If it's Thursday there must be Madonna news from Britain. The
Material Mom's London pad was burgled while she was attending the
premiere of The Next Best Thing. None of Madonna's possessions were
stolen, but thieves did manage to sneak off with a bag belonging to
her gardener.

AALIYAH PREPARES TO SPARKLE
Action-flick actress Aaliyah is in negotiations to play the Irene
Cara role in a remake of the '70s musical flick Sparkle. Whitney
Houston will serve as one of the film's producers, and the remake
will feature an entirely new soundtrack.

******STAGE******
JERRY HALL GETS NAKED
Jerry Hall is set to follow in Kathleen Turner's footsteps and bare
all in the London stage production of The Graduate. The 43-year-old
former wife of Mick Jagger will replace Turner at the end of July.
"I'm over the moon and cannot wait," she says.

SPEAKING OF MADONNA
Forget those reports of the singer stepping into the off-Broadway
play The Vagina Monologues. Madonna turned down an offer to appear
in the controversial performance piece.

"CAGNEY" HITS THE STAGE
Sharon Gless, former TV partner of Tyne Daly, is returning to the
stage, this time in The Lion in Winter, Aug. 14-26 at the Cape
Playhouse in Dennis, MA. She'll co-star with Randall Duk Kim, a
veteran of soaps and theater.

SURVIVOR GOES DOWN UNDER
How about a sequel to Survivor? CBS is apparently planning a second
version of the surprise-hit TV series for early next year. And show
honcho Mark Burnett wants to hold the contest in the Australian
outback. "I'm fairly certain we'll do another one, whenever it's
ready," says CBS Television president Leslie Moonves.

TNT GIVES VIEWERS THE SHAFT
Prepare to get the shaft from TNT - a 10-hour Shaft marathon on
Tuesday. The cable network will air the three original Shaft
movies, as well as two 90-minute episodes of CBS's short-lived
Shaft TV series. The marathon also features a discussion with
Samuel L. Jackson, John Singleton (star and director, respectively,
of the new Shaft movie hitting theaters this Friday) and Richard
Roundtree, the original Shaft.

FOX REVAMPS DON'T ASK
Tony-winning actor Anthony LaPaglia has been jettisoned from the
cast of John Goodman's upcoming Fox sitcom Don't Ask as the series
undergoes a makeover. Goodman's character will still be playing a
gay father, but he won't be living with a straight roommate
(LaPagila); instead, he'll now live with his sister and son. Other
characters from the pilot episode are also being cut, and casting
is underway for new characters for the series, which will air
Wednesdays this fall.

NEWSMAN JUDD ROSE DEAD AT 45
Judd Rose, a TV newsman known for his work on ABC and CNN, died
Saturday in New York at age 45; AP reports that he died of brain
cancer. Rose won four Emmy awards, including honors for his
coverage of Princess Diana's funeral. At CNN Rose anchored
Newsstand, while at ABC he worked on several programs, including
Nightline.

DUELING JACKIES HITS TV
Actress Joanne Whalley has been cast in the title role
of the CBS miniseries Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis: A Life... not to
be confused with the upcoming NBC miniseries Jackie, Ethel, Joan:
The Women of Camelot, which features Law & Order star Jill Hennessy
as Jackie. The rival projects will premiere opposite each other on
Sunday, Nov. 5.

'NYPD BLUE' STAYS TILL 2002
The cops of "NYPD Blue" will be working the streets of New York for
two more seasons. ABC has picked up Steven Bochco's Emmy-winning
cop drama through May 2002, ensuring the series will live to see
its ninth season on the air. The network also has an option for a
10th year.

3. MOVIE REVIEW - DVD
================================================

Edited by Laurie

ENEMY OF THE STATE - Will Smith, Gene Hackman, Jon Voight
This film didn't get a very warm reception at the box-office, but I
liked it. I'm into films that make the government the bad guys,
like Conspiracy Theory. Smith plays an innocent everyday man who
gets caught up in a major government plot. This film's main goal
is to make the audience leave and look over their shoulder to see
if 'Big Brother' is watching. This movie had good action sequences,
really good special effects, and typical stunts. The DVD has a
pair of featurettes, trailer, and scene access.

JFK DIRECTOR'S CUT - Kevin Costner, Sissy Spacek, Tommy Lee Jones,
Gary Oldman, Kevin Bacon, Laurie Metcalf, Michael Rooker, Joe
Pesci, Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau, Donald Sutherland, John Candy
I saw this movie 4 times in theaters and each time I felt like I
was watching the true story of the assassination of JFK. This film
is a powerhouse with an amazing ensemble cast, perfect direction,
and a story that will forever remain a mystery. I bought the DVD
because there's an extra 17 minutes of additional scenes. Other
features include menus, notes, scene access. The only drawback of
the DVD is that it's a 'flipper' disc. This means that about half
way through the film, the disc needs to be flipped over to view the
remaining portion of the film. This fan doesn't care though.

GLORY - Matthew Broderick, Denzel Washington, Cary Elwes, Morgan
Freeman
The best war movie made until Saving Private Ryan came to be.
Washington won Oscar for his role in this film. This is the true
story of the first black regiment to fight for the North in the
Civil War. I love this movie. The acting is unparalleled and the
story is so moving and even horrific at times, that you can't help
but feel stunned when it's over. The DVD has multiple languages
and subtitles and scene access.

THE MAN IN THE IRON MASK - Leonardo DiCaprio, Jeremy Irons, John
Malkovich, Gerard, Depardieu, Gebriel Byrne
All for one and one for all, but they could have left DiCaprio at
home. I loved the film, but I just couldn't believe DiCaprio has
the innocent, victim twin...I could completely believe his
portrayal of the s.o.b. King though. The rest of the cast is
perfect, including my favorite Malkovich. The movie is based on
what may be a true story of twin brothers who were heir to the
throne of France. The two are separated and the one that becomes
King has his brother put into an iron mask and imprisoned. The
rest of the story is four Musketeers who free the twin and train
him to impersonate the evil King and rule France with a gentle and
caring hand. Good movie with a romantic twist thrown into the mix.
The DVD is impressive with menus, commentary, storyboard drawings,
booklet, and trailer.
