JUST IN CASE YOU DIDN'T HEAR
In an interview with Mr Showbiz today, actor Nicolas Cage dropped
the bomb on Warner Brothers on again / off again continuation of
the Superman franchise: he won't be donning the tights and cape of
the last son of Krypton. "At first it seemed like fun but too much
time has passed, " Cage said during the press junket for Gone in 60
Seconds. "I wanted to part company with it."

'PEANUTS' HONORED BY CONGRESS
The House approved and sent to the White House Tuesday legislation
awarding a Congressional Gold Medal to the late "Peanuts" comic
strip creator Charles Schulz. The gold medal is the highest
civilian honor given by Congress.

DUVALL CLOSES IN ON 'GHOST'
Clea DuVall is in final negotiations to co-star in the sci-fi
action thriller ``John Carpenter's Ghost of Mars,'' opposite
Courtney Love and Ice Cube. Shooting is slated to start in early
August in New Mexico. Jason Statham and Joanna Cassidy also star.

SHARON STONE'S EX-MAID JAILED FOR THEFT
Sharon Stone's former housekeeper was sentenced to 16 months in
prison after pleading no contest to taking pricey handbags, shoes,
jewelry and other goods from the actress. Judge Victoria Chavez
also ordered Socorro "Coco" Del Carmen Membrano to pay Stone as
much as $50,000 in restitution.

DAMON TO PLAY WITH APES?
Heard Director Tim Burton is close to signing Matt Damon to star in
his big screen "re-envisioning "of PLANET OF THE APES.

TOM GREEN TO DIRECT FIRST FLICK
Tom Green, the MTV talk show host and star of the current film
"Road Trip," will make his directorial debut on the film "Freddy
Got Fingered" for New Regency Productions and 20th Century Fox. The
script which involves a man forced to move back in with his parents
was inked by Derek Harvie with Green as co-writer. The project
begins production July 17.

LATEST SCRIPT DEALS
Miramax has bought Kayla Alpert's comedy pitch "Outward Blonde."
The story is about a materialistic Long Islander sent to an
intensive Outward Bound program after being caught stealing at
Louis Vuitton. Revolution Studios has snapped up the comic pitch
"Girls" by Josh Goldsmith and Cathy Yuspa. In "Girls," an awkward
13-year-old girl gets transported through time into the body of her
28-year-old self, and gets a look at what her life will be like if
she grows up too fast. Jeff King has been tapped to pen the
adaptation of the Nelson DeMille thriller "The Lion's Game" for
Columbia Pictures. "Lion's" is the story of a gifted terrorist and
the ATF agent who strives to halt the criminal's methodical yet
unpredictable bloodbath.

BOB HOPE RELEASED!
A week after he was hospitalized for intestinal bleeding, a frail
but smiling Bob Hope stood and waved to cameras Wednesday and then
was sent home. The 97-year-old entertainer's appearance outside
Eisenhower Medical Center had been planned, but not his discharge.
Hope decided Wednesday that as long as he was up and dressed that
he would go home, and his doctor agreed. Here's to wishing you a
speedy recovery Bob!

CELINE DION EXPECTING
Singer Celine Dion, who took a break from performing to try to get
pregnant after having difficulty conceiving, said Friday she is
expecting a baby next year. "We just found out," she said in a
statement, adding that she and husband-manager Rene Angelil were
"completely, totally happy" with the news.

'STAR WARS' RUMOR MILL CHURNING
Word around the campfire is that Temuera Morrison (Once Were
Warriors, Barb Wire) is up for a (presumably large) role in Episode
2. Furthermore, adolescent New Zealand actors Tupoutahi Winitana
and Tihoi Taylor, are reportedly in the running to play younger
versions of Temuera's character.

ELISABETH SHUE GRADUATES
Elisabeth Shue is leaving Cambridge. Shue, who earned an Oscar
nomination for "Leaving Las Vegas," was among the thousands who
donned caps and gowns and graduated from Harvard University on
Thursday. Shue was one semester short of earning a political
science degree when she dropped out of Harvard 15 years ago to
start her acting career.

WONG TO DIRECT 'PSYCHIC GIRL'
- Kirk Wong is attached to direct the feature adaptation of "Mai,
The Psychic Girl" for Sony Pictures. Based on a Japanese Manga
comic book series about a little girl who is initially reluctant to
learn that she has psychic powers, the project has a long Hollywood
history. Tim Burton was once attached to direct the film for
defunct studio Carolco; later, Francis Ford Coppola developed the
property.

BAKER IN FINAL NEGOTIATIONS FOR 'NECKLACE'
Aussie actor Simon Baker is in final negotiations to star as the
love interest of Oscar-winner Hilary Swank in the period drama "The
Affair of the Necklace." Set in pre-revolutionary France,
"Necklace" centers on a young aristocratic woman left penniless by
political unrest. She must avenge her family's fall from grace by
scheming to steal a priceless necklace. Shooting begins next month
in Prague.

LUKE PERRY DADDY TO 2
Luke Perry is a father again. Sophie Perry weighed 7 pounds, 14
ounces when delivered at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday at an undisclosed Los
Angeles area hospital, publicist Paul Bloch said. It was the second
child for Perry and his wife Minnie.

LETTERMAN SLAPPED WITH JURY DUTY
David Letterman showed up for jury duty Friday but didn't make the
cut. The civic-minded talk show host spent 2 1/2 hours in Superior
Court, taking part in a juror orientation that included watching
two short films. But he didn't make it to the jury box.

CLERKS CANCELLED ALREADY
After only two episodes had been aired, the ABC TV network has
decided to pull the plug on Kevin Smith's Clerks animated series.

1970'S SHAFT ON TNT
Three days before the new version of Paramount's ``Shaft'' hits the
multiplexes on June 16, TNT will host a 10-hour ``Shaft'' marathon
featuring a discussion with the new movie's star, Samuel L.
Jackson; its director, John Singleton; and the original John Shaft,
Richard Roundtree.

'SURVIVOR' A HIT FOR CBS
"Survivor" swamped the Wednesday competition for the second
straight week, improving on last week's premiere numbers and giving
CBS a win for the night against the NBA Finals on NBC and a
contestant closing in on the top prize on ABC's "Who Wants to Be a
Millionaire."
