3. IN THE NEWS
=======================================================

STILLER TIES THE KNOT
According to sources, Ben Stiller the 34-year-old actor-comedian
married 28-year-old actress, Christine Taylor Saturday in a
ceremony in Hawaii. Stiller and Taylor began dating last year after
meeting on the set of "Heat, Vision and Jack," a TV pilot Stiller
is developing for Fox. He popped the question last November.
Stiller, who went big box office in 1998's "There's Something About
Mary," most recently appeared in the religious comedy "Keeping The
Faith" with Edward Norton and Jenna Elfman.

MADONNA'S GUY STRIKES A POSE
Madonna's beau was arrested this week in London for assaulting a
fan outside Madonna's home. Allegedly director Guy Ritchie kicked
and punched a 20-year-old man while Madonna allegedly sat in her
car and laughed! "[Ritchie] aimed a high kick at the camera around
his neck - he must do kickboxing or something," said the injured
fan's pal. "Then he started laying into him - punching and kicking.
There was no reason for it. My mate wasn't taking pictures. He
couldn't hit back - he's only slim and Ritchie is a big bloke. We
thought it was never going to end."

JOSIE CREATOR KICKED TO THE CURB
Eighty-year-old comics legend Dan DeCarlo is a man without a job.
DeCarlo, known for drawing Archie Andrews and Josie and the
Pussycats among others, was fired by Archie Comics because he made
a stink about wanting a share of the profits of the upcoming Josie
and the Pussycats live-action movie. "This is a case about
fairness, really. Archie refused to honor my rights as the creator
of "Josie and the Pussycats," and [the publisher] was trying to
negotiate a deal to stop me attempting to sue and settle," DeCarlo
says. The case is still in litigation. In related news Rosario
Dawson (Kids, Light It Up) will play a Pussycat, alongside Rachael
Leigh Cook and Tara Reid, in the "Josie and the Pussycats" feature
film. Parker Posey and Alan Cumming also star.

WOODY ALLEN SIGNS WITH DREAMWORKS
Woody Allen has signed a long-term deal for DreamWorks SKG, the
studio founded by Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David
Geffen, to distribute his upcoming comedies. Allen signed with
DreamWorks for his latest comedy, "Small Time Crooks," and recently
agreed to have the studio distribute his next three comedies as
well.

SCHWARZTMAN JOINS 'DARKO'
Jason Schwartzman has signed on to the dramatic fantasy "Donnie
Darko." Drew Barrymore will executive produce and play a small
part in the film, which will be written and directed by Richard
Kelly.

IRONS COMMITS TO 'IGUANA'
Jeremy Irons has committed to starring in an adaptation of the
Tennessee Williams play "The Night of the Iguana," which Kirk
Douglas
and Thora Birch are negotiating to star in.

JAGGER'S MOTHER DIES
Eva Jagger, 87-year-old mother of Rolling Stones rocker Mick
Jagger, died Thursday after being hospitalized with a heart
condition. Mick's late mother and surviving father, Joe, would have
celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in December.

MORE JAGGER
Mick's divorce from Jerry Hall recently became final. Has part of
the settlement, she'll receive $12 million a year with unusual
clauses...she's not allowed to be alone with another man for any
longer than 2 days or all settlements will be forfeited. Oddly
enough, Jagger and Hall are reportedly still living together.

YOU CAN CALL HIM PRINCE
Prince, who years ago changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol
and insisted he be referred to as "The Artist Formerly Known as
Prince" or simply "The Artist," says we may now once again call him
Prince. The Artist, er, Prince, says he decided to revert to his
original name now that he's over a long-standing battle with his
former record label, Warner Bros.

ALLEY BUYS LISA MARIE'S PAD
Kirstie Alley (Cheers, Veronica's Closet) has purchased the
Clearwater, FL, home of Lisa Marie Presley for $1.5 million. The
home is just a few blocks away from the Church of Scientology's
headquarters in the region, which is home to an estimated 10,000
Scientologists. Both Alley and Presley are high-profile members of
the controversial church.

SEX CASE CONTINUES FOR JACK
A woman who claims she was beaten by Jack Nicholson during a
three-way sex romp back in 1996 is suing to overturn the $32,000
settlement she received from the Oscar-winning actor after the
incident. Catherine Sheehan says the ongoing hospital treatment for
the trauma has already topped $60,000. Nicholson's rep refused to
comment.

BILLY BOB & ANGELINA PICK FLICK
Wacky newlyweds Billy Bob Thornton and Angelina Jolie are set to
star in a dark comedy described as 'Midnight Cowboy for the new
millennium.' Matt Damon and Penelope Cruz are also attached to the
project, with Pedro Almodovar in line to direct.

FINALLY DAMES
British-born screen legends Elizabeth Taylor and Julie Andrews were
both made dames by Britain's Queen Elizabeth during a ceremony at
Buckingham Palace on Tuesday. Taylor, 68, told reporters that she
wished late husband Richard Burton had been there for the honors.
"I miss him so much," she said.

WRESTLER TO BIG SCREEN
Wrestling star "Stone Cold" Steve Austin is in final talks to play
a Hell's Angels motorcycle gang member in a movie about late 1960s
rocker Janis Joplin. The producers of Joplin: The Movie are also in
talks with Roy Scheider to play Joplin's manager. Already on board:
Laura Theodore as Joplin and Jennifer Tilly as Joplin's
drug-pushing friend.

EASY RIDER RIDES AGAIN
Plans are underway for a $30 million sequel to the 1969 hippie
flick Easy Rider. Mikki Allen Willis (Shoe Shine Boys) will write
and direct; Glen Tobias (The Gingerbread Man) will produce.
Shooting is scheduled to begin in the fall. No word on actors yet.

CLOONEY MAY HAVE A REVELATION
George Clooney may be going to the starring role in Danny DeVito's
next directing gig, Revelation. Clooney is in talks to take on the
role of an internal affairs officer who takes a bullet for a
cardinal during an assassination attempt. Clooney's character then
seeks out the person who fired the bullet even as his life is
altered by the shooting taking him through a religious journey. If
Clooney signs on, production will start on the project in
September.

MORE CLOONEY
Clooney's Ocean's Eleven remake has been pushed back a little
further with a scheduled start date of early next year.

NEW M FOR BOND
Edward Woodward (The Equalizer) is in talks to take over the role
of M from Judi Dench for the next James Bond movie. Woodward is at
the top of the list of potential replacements for Dench. The film's
producers were particularly impressed by the actor's recent
performance in a remake of The Professionals, prompting talk of the
his taking on the role of 007's boss. Also, the working title of
James Bond 20 is currently Beyond the Ice.

SPY GAME LOSES DIRECTOR
Universal has announced that award winning director Mike Van Diem
(Karaktar) has left the Robert Redford, Brad Pitt-starring Spy
Game. Spy Game tells the story of a CIA operative who, nearing
retirement, has to rescue his apprentice, who is held captive by
Chinese intelligence agents. Van Diem had been developing Spy Game
for the last eighteen months but exited the project over "a
different vision for the pic's tone and scale," said Marc Abraham,
president of Universal-based Beacon Comminications.

WARNER BROS. MOVES 'POTTER' RELEASE DATE
Warner Bros. has officially moved the release date of what was to
be its summer 2001 tent pole: "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's
Stone," which is being directed by Chris Columbus. Insiders said
the studio will move the film to November.

OLDMAN MAY BE D'ARTAGNAN
Gary Oldman is on the verge of signing on to a reworked version of
the Three Muskateers called D'Artagnan. Besides Oldman, Mena Suvari
(American Beauty) and Justin Chambers (Liberty Heights) are also in
final negotiations to jump on board, with word that Chambers will
take the title role. The reworked version of the Dumas story
focuses on D'Artagnan, who is on a quest across Europe to avenge
his parents' deaths. Peter Hyams (End of Days) will direct with a
script by Gene Quintano (Sudden Death).

SMITH MAKES IT OFFICIAL
Will Smith has finally signed on to the title role in the Ali
bio-pic. Smith will take home $20M plus 20% of gross. Rumors
suggest the reason it took so long for Smith to sign up was due to
word that he was seeking a two-picture deal with Sony that may have
included Men In Black 2 as well.

TITANIC MEETS CON AIR...SORT OF
Another animated version of Charles Dickens' classic A Christmas
Carol in the works. A new British animated film is in the works
with Nicolas Cage and Kate Winslet already attached to provide
voices. Also, Simon Callow will voice Scrooge, who will also appear
in live-action footage at the beginning and end of the film. The
film will have a budget of $12M and will be helmed by Jimmy
Murakami. The film is currently in production and is expected to
wrap by next summer.

*******STAGE******

ROSIE PLANS A TONY AWARDS MARATHON: Rosie O'Donnell is giving the
producers of this year's Tony-nominated musicals a panic attack.
The outspoken host of the Tony telecast has concocted an opening
number that is so long, it could cut into air time allotted to
scenes from the seven musicals that are up for awards. Producers
fear the stage is being set for a repeat of last year's It Ain't
Nothin' But the Blues debacle, when a scene from that show was cut
at the last minute so the Tony telecast would end on time. No word
on any concrete show decisions.

JULIE ANDREWS TO SING AGAIN?: Veteran star Julie Andrews (The Sound
of Music, Mary Poppins) says she hopes to sing again despite losing
her voice following throat surgery. "Do I think I will ever sing
again? My answer is I have to be optimistic. And so I hope so," she
says. Andrews is suing a New York hospital and two doctors for
alleged malpractice after she said her ability to sing was ruined
by a throat operation.

90210 GOODBYE SCORES BIG
The bad news is that Beverly Hills, 90210 is over; the good news is
that the series finale scored huge ratings, giving Fox its best
Wednesday night numbers in almost five years. 90210's weepy
wedding beat Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and Jesus among viewers
18 to 49.

HBO ORDERS MORE OZ
HBO has ordered another 16 episodes of the gritty prison drama Oz.
New cast members joining the series will be Reg E. Cathey as the
new warden and Lance Reddick as an undercover cop. No word on any
other additions at this time.

UPN ANNOUNCES NEW LINEUP
Among new shows getting the go-ahead for UPN's fall schedule:
Freedom, a martial-arts action hour from big-shot movie producer
Joel Silver; FBI drama Level 9; Girlfriends, a sitcom about four
single African-American women, and, starting in February, pro
football games from the newly formed XFL.

MILLIONAIRE VARIATIONS AHEAD
ABC plans to expand on its popular Who Wants to Be a Millionaire
game-show format this fall with special college week and teen week
editions. The network is also considering a worldwide broadcast of
an international tournament of champions starring both Regis
Philbin and British Millionaire host Chris Tarrant.

MORE MILLIONAIRE
ABC is expected to announce a new fall schedule featuring four
hours a week of Regis Philbin's seemingly unstoppable Who Wants to
Be a Millionaire. The popular game show, which currently airs
Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday nights, is expected to add an hour on
Wednesdays. The new ABC schedule is also expected to include new
sitcoms with stars Geena Davis (Lost and Found), Damon Wayans (Wife
and Kids) and Gabriel Byrne (Madigan Men).

GOOD VS. EVIL GETS THE BOOT
Sci Fi Channel has pulled the plug on its low-rated series Good vs.
Evil after a year on the air. It will be replaced by a new series,
Invisible Man, in the 9 pm/ET Friday slot. Good vs. Evil started
out as GvsE on Sci Fi sister network USA and ran for a total of 22
episodes.

NBC MOVES FRASIER
Prepare for big yuks on Tuesday nights this fall as NBC debuts a
two-hour comedy block featuring a new sitcom with ex-Seinfeld star
Michael Richards at 8 pm/ET and Frasier in the 9 pm/ET slot, moving
from Thursday. The new lineup, desiged to do battle with ABC's Who
Wants to Be a Millionaire, will also include the Katey Sagal sitcom
Tucker at 8:30 and the David Alan Grier comedy DAG at 9:30.
Frasier will probably be the only survivior of this mess.

SPIELBERG PREPS TV MOVIE
Steven Spielberg has signed on as executive producer for Anne
Frank: The Whole Story, a three-hour ABC TV-movie about the famed
Holocaust victim. The network is considering airing the
high-profile project next May without commercial interruption.

THE PJS GO TO THE WB
Fox animated series The PJs is headed for the WB this fall joining
fellow network jumper Sabrina, the Teenage Witch (ABC). New shows
expected to join WB's schedule include the sketch comedy Hype and a
family-friendly drama titled Gilmore Girls.

X-FILES AND DUCHOVNY KISS AND MAKE UP
David Duchovny has ended the speculation and has completed his deal
with FOX. The actor will return for approximately 11 episodes of
the new season (there is usually 22 episodes per season) for
$350,000-400,000 per episode. Chris Carter also revealed that
multiple endings for this Sunday's season finale where filmed in
case of the possibility Duchovny did not return.

TV CANCELATIONS
CBS has decided not to renew the medical show "Chicago Hope", the
action/comedy "Martial Law", the drama "Early Edition" and the
sci-fi series "Now and Again". The Discovery Channel is set to do a
film about the life of the 'Croc Hunter' on their "Animal Planet"
show, though a writer has yet to be selected.

HASSELHOFF & SNL ALUMN JOIN UP
David Hasselhoff is coming on board Mike Myers' Sprockets film to
play the flick's villain: himself. The film's story may have the
actor jealous of the success of the Sprockets TV show in Germany,
even beating out Baywatch. He has Dieter's monkey kidnapped and
brought to America. Dieter must shut down his show and journey to
the U.S. to recover the only thing he cares about. The film's
script was written by Mike Myers with Michael McCullers and Jack
Handey. Production is set to start this summer.
