TOM CRUISE IN 'A BEAUTIFUL MIND'?
Heard that Tom Cruise may play John Forbes Nash for director Ron
Howard in "A Beautiful Mind". The movie centers around a
mathematical genius (John Forbes Nash) who beat schizophrenia and
won a Nobel Prize.

*N SYNC FROM STAGE TO SCREEN
N Sync will supposedly announce some sort of film plans at next
month's Cannes film festival. Apparently the project will be made
with a Christmas 2001 release date in mind.

'BLAIR WITCH 2' BEHIND THE SCENES
The other night Entertainment Tonight aired a special behind the
scene look at the sequel. The two minute segment included
interviews with the crew and showed some scenes from the film.

'THE BIOGRAPHER'
biographer Andrew Morton is the subject of an upcoming biopic
called, "The Biographer". Philip Saville (Metroland) is directing
the project, which stars Brian Cox and Paul McGann with Faye
Dunaway portraying another journalist.

Rumor has it that Annette Benning may portray Judy Garland in a
biopic dubbed Rainbow's End.

HURT, BALE TO REUNITE
John Hurt and Christian Bale will reunite (following last year's
All the Little Animals) in the John Madden film to be entitled
Captain Correli's Mandolin. The cast also includes Penelope Cruz
and Nic Cage.

SPIELBERG FUNDS THEATER
A contribution from Steven Spielberg will be used to build a
theater at the National D-Day Memorial. Spielberg asked that the
amount of his donation not be disclosed. The theater, part of a $4
million education center at the memorial, will be named for the
director's father, Arnold Spielberg, who flew Army Air Corps
missions as a radio operator in Burma during World War II.

RESTRUCTERING SOUGHT FOR AOL-TIME WARNER
Consumer groups on Wednesday demanded a major restructuring of the
proposed America Online-Time Warner merger, saying the new company
could squelch Internet competitors and would be connected with
another cable giant - AT&T. The petition filed with the Federal
Communications Commission by leading consumer advocates seeks a
severing of any ties that would link the two merging businesses
with cable or satellite competitors. The groups fear that without
such measures, consumers will ultimately have less choice for
Internet services and the content they receive.

CASTING 'THE PINK PANTHER'
Kevin Spacey is being eyed for the role of Inspector Jacques
Clouseau in MGM's long-in-the-works remake of "The Pink Panther."
MGM plans to put the project into production by the end of this
year with Ivan Reitman producing.

ASHLEY JUDD TO TIE THE KNOT
Ashley Judd is racing toward matrimony with CART driver Dario
Franchitti. Actually, the two have been engaged since December but
kept it private, their parents said Monday in a statement. A
wedding date has not been set.

TOM GREEN - 'THE MONSTER'
Comic Tom Green will tackle "The Monster," the Walt Disney-based
Spyglass Entertainment's remake of Oscar-winning filmmaker Roberto
Benigni's 1994 comedy "Il Mostro." Benigni will serve as one of the
film's executive producers but will not be involved with the
development of the project. The project has no start date. Green,
who will reprise Benigni's role as a mild-mannered man mistaken for
a serial killer, is also working on a script rewrite for the
project.

MAJOR 'JAWS' RE-RELEASE IN JULY
Steven Spielberg's "Jaws" is scheduled for release on DVD
through Universal Home Video on July 11th. The DVD, which
will be enhanced with deleted scenes and DTS 5.1 Surround
Sound, is expected to be followed by E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL
and "Jurassic Park"

'SPACE JAM' DVD DETAILS
Warner Bros. Home Video will release a special edition of
Space Jam on DVD on July 25th, which not only includes
music videos, a "making of" featurette, and deleted scenes,
but also audio commentary from Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck.

DURST TO DIRECT 'RUNT'
Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst will direct "Runt", a high school drama
about a picked-on student seeking revenge on his tormentors. Durst
is being mentored for this directorial debut by David Fincher.

FINCHER MAY HELM 'SQUIDS'
David Fincher (Fight Club, Seven) is expected to direct
the drama "Squids". The film involves a novice young sailor
manning a nuclear submarine in the final days of the Cold War.

'SHEARER'S BREAKFAST' CASTINGS
Barry Watson (7th Heaven, Teaching Mrs. Tingle), Radha Mitchell
(Pitch Black, High Art), and Josh Lucas (American Psycho)
are attached to star in "Shearer's Breakfast".
The thriller involves a wounded man (Watson) showing
up at a diner, claiming to be chased by murderers.

LEIGH & CUMMING CO-WRITE AND DIRECT 'PARTY'
Jennifer Jason Leigh and Alan Cumming will co-write and co-direct
the Fine line Features film "The Anniversary Party". Jane Adams,
Mina Badie, Jennifer Beals, Phoebe Cates, John Hickey, Kevin Kline,
Lisa Kudrow, Denis O'Hare, Gwyneth Paltrow, and John C. Reilly are
being sought to star in this ensemble project about a game of truth
or dare at a couple's sixth anniversary party.

SCHAEFER TO DIRECT 'NEVER AGAIN'
Eric Schaeffer (If Lucy Fell) will direct the romantic comedy NEVER
AGAIN. In the film, Jill Clayburgh and Jeffrey Tambor play two
fifty somethings who vow never to fall in love again. Michael
McKean also stars, as a transvestite named Alex.

'SCOOBY-DOO' ON FAST TRACK
Warner Bros. live-action SCOOBY-DOO film is back on the fast track.
Screenwriter James Gunn (The Specials) recently turned in
his draft for the film, and the studio is reportedly still
trying to lure Mike Myers to play Shaggy.

****STAGE****

GOODBYE 'MISS SAIGON'
First it was "Cats," now it's "Miss Saigon." The long-running
British musical set against the backdrop of the Vietnam War will
close Dec. 31, after a nearly 10-year run of 4,063 performances.
Its final curtain will come six months after the June 25 closing of
"Cats," another big British musical produced by Cameron Mackintosh.

REGIS HAS ARTERY-CLEARING PROCEDURE
Regis Philbin underwent a procedure that successfully cleared a
blocked artery, the television host said Thursday. Philbin had the
procedure done Monday, while he was on vacation, and stayed one
night in the hospital.


LENO ON WALK OF FAME
On Thursday, Jay Leno host of the "Tonight Show" was on hand to see
a star with his name on it paved onto Hollywood's Walk of Fame.

'ER' ON NBC THROUGH 2004
NBC said Friday it has extended the shows run through the 2003-04
season. While former stars Sherry Stringfield and George Clooney
have checked out and Julianna Margulies is leaving at the end of
this season, original cast members Wyle, Anthony Edwards and Eriq
La Salle have said they'll stay.

CELEBRITY 'MILLIONAIRE' BEGINS TONIGHT
The special celebrity edition of Who WantsTo Be A Millionaire
begins on ABC tonight at 8 and runs through Thursday. The
contestants competing for their favorite charities, picked to play
as usual by winning the Fastest Finger round, are Drew Carey, Rosie
O'Donnell, David Duchovny, Dana Carvey, Vanessa L. Williams, Kathie
Lee Gifford, Queen Latifah, Ray Romano, chef Emeril Lagasse, and 'N
SYNC's Lance Bass.

ACCLAIMED BRIT VAMPIRE MINI TO AIR IN U.S.
The British vampire miniseries ULTRAVIOLET will air on
The SCI-FI Channel beginning July 31st. A pilot for a
U.S. series based on ULTRAVIOLET is also in the works at
FOX for the fall, with a cast that include Madchen Amick
(Twin Peaks), Eric Thal (Snow Falling on Cedars), Spence
Decker (Mercury Falls), Joanna Going (Phantoms), and
Idris Elba (Family Affairs).
