3. IN THE NEWS
=======================================================

DIAZ AND COLUMBIA
Cameron Diaz is circling the lead role in Columbia Pictures'
offbeat romantic comedy the "Untitled Nancy Pimental Project" The
story is about a girl who finds that she is forced to educate
herself on the etiquette of wooing the opposite sex when she
finally meets Mr. Right.

'SWORDFISH' FOR TRAVOLTA
John Travolta is set to star in Warner Bros.' "Swordfish" for
director Dominic Sena and producers Joel Silver and Jonathan Krane.
"Swordfish," is a dark story in which Travolta portrays the world's
most dangerous spy, a charismatic, multifaceted man hired by the
CIA to coerce a computer hacker recently released from prison to
help steal $6 billion in unused government funds. In exchange, the
hacker can regain custody of his daughter and start a new life. An
early July start is planned.

INDIE FILM 'INVESTIGATING SEX'
Nick Nolte, Neve Campbell and Robin Tunney have signed on to the
indie comedy-drama "Investigating Sex," directed by Alan Rudolph.
The script focuses on a group of men scientifically studying sex
and two female stenographers (Campbell and Tunney) who transcribe
the erotically charged discussions. Eventually, the lines of
professionalism between the sexual explorers and transcribers break
down.

NEWS ON 'THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO'
Director Kevin Reynolds will direct the big-budget, live-action
film "The Count of Monte Cristo" for Disney-based Spyglass
Entertainment. based on the classic book by Alexandre Dumas, it is
a story of a sailor who has been sent to an island fortress after
being falsely accused of treason. The seaman eventually gets rich
from a buried treasure and exacts revenge on his captors. Jim
Caviezel from "The Thin Red Line" will star. Filming is scheduled
to begin in Ireland in Late July.

SELLECK TO GET DOCTORATE
Pepperdine University is giving an honorary doctorate to actor Tom
Selleck, who attended the University of Southern California.
Selleck was chosen because of his outstanding character and ethics,
Pepperdine said. The degree will be bestowed during Seaver College
commencement ceremonies April 28.

HOPKINS BECOMES U.S. CITIZEN
Academy Award-winning actor Anthony Hopkins has shed his British
passport and become a U.S. citizen. Hopkins, 62, renounced his
British citizenship during a small, private ceremony in Los
Angeles, with director Steven Spielberg among the show-business
friends serving as his witnesses.

'POTTER' RELEASE MAY BE DELAYED?
"Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" may end up being pulled out
of summer 2001, where it is officially slated for release. a
mid-November start might be more realistic given the bevy of
special effects involved and the need to cast the picture. "Potter"
got off to a slow start after awaiting Steven Spielberg's decision
on whether he'd direct the film or not. Two weeks after Spielberg
opted instead for "A.I." in mid-March, Warner Bros. signed Chris
Columbus to helm.

'PHANTOM MENACE' TRAILS 'SIXTH SENSE' ON VIDEO
Though 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment's "Star Wars: Episode
I - The Phantom Menace" video has sold a reported 10 million copies
since its April 4 debut, the title still couldn't beat "The Sixth
Sense" at rental counters. Buena Vista Home Entertainment's
Oscar-nominated thriller was the No. 1 renting video and DVD for
the second week in a row, while in its debut "Phantom Menace" was
the No. 2 rental for the week ending April 9, according to the VSDA
VidTrac data tracking service. "Sense" is now the best-selling DVD
title of 2000, with the year's former topper "The Matrix" at No. 2.

RYNOLDS, COSTNER TOGETHER AGAIN?
Kevin Reynolds and Kevin Costner, two pals who began their careers
together but had a major falling out during the logistically
challenged "Waterworld," are plotting a reteam for another pic that
takes place mostly on the water. "Okracoke" is the true story of
Robert Maynard, a disgraced British naval captain who seeks to
redeem himself by hunting down the notorious pirate Blackbeard. He
succeeds after a vicious battle that takes place on Okracoke, a
waterway near South Carolina. Maynard cut off Blackbeard's head and
stuck it on the bow of his ship.

OLDMAN MOVES CLOSER TO JOINING 'HANNIBAL'
Gary Oldman is now back in the mix for MGM and Universal's
"Hannibal." Negotiations reportedly had stalled over the issue of
Oldman's billing, but he is now back in talks to play the role of
Hannibal's former victim and nemesis Mason Verger.

DE LAURENTIIS TO RECIEVE LIFETIME ACHIEVMENT AWARD
Veteran producer Dino De Laurentiis, whose career spans 58 years
and includes such films as Federico Fellini's "Nights of Cabiria,"
1977's "King Kong" and Jonathan Mostow's upcoming "U-571," will be
honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at this year's Cinema
Expo International Convention in June. De Laurentiis has produced,
presented, financed and distributed more than 600 films and is
credited with launching the careers of such directors as Sydney
Pollack, Sidney Lumet, Milos Forman, Bruce Beresford, David Lynch,
Robert Altman, David Cronenberg and Michael Mann. De Laurentiis is
in preproduction on "Hannibal".

TV-FILM PAREPHENALIA ON THE AUCTION BLOCK
A pristine pair of size 6B ruby slippers made for Judy Garland in
"The Wizard of Oz" is set to be auctioned off at a Christie's East
sale of Hollywood and television memorabilia, auction house
officials said. Collectors estimate the pair could sell for
$750,000. Also included in the May 24 auction are the Cowardly
Lion's "Oz" costume (expected to fetch $600,000), a Rolls-Royce
from the James Bond classic "Goldfinger" and Christopher Reeve's
Superman capes and body stockings (expected to fetch $40,000 each).
The Lion getup, worn by Bert Lahr in the 1939 family classic, could
fetch $600,000, collectors said. The Roll-Royce, a 12-cylinder,
dual-ignition 1937 Phantom 111, probably could be driven home for
about $200,000. Other items up for auction include the black wool
yachting cap worn by Alan Hale, as the Skipper, in "Gilligan's
Island" (estimate $10,000) and a cigarette lighter inscribed with a
love note that Lucille Ball gave to Desi Arnaz ($1,000).

WES BENTLEY OUT OF 'QUEEN OF THE DAMNED'
In an abrupt turn of events, "American Beauty" star Wes Bentley has
dropped out of "Queen of the Damned," the big-screen adaptation of
the Anne Rice novel. At the same time, singer Aaliyah, who made her
feature debut in "Romeo Must Die," is set to star in the Warner
Bros. project as the queen.

KIEFER SUTHERLAND JOINS PROTEST
Canadian actor Kiefer Sutherland joined thousands of protesters at
a rally to denounce plans to privatize part of the country's public
health care system. Sutherland, whose grandfather Tommy Douglas was
a pioneer in setting up Canada's health care system, said a
proposal to allow private operators to provide some health services
will lead to direct competition with public health care and cause
the public system to deteriorate.
