3. IN THE NEWS
=======================================================
Hi all. Before we get started, I just wanted to apologize for
missing Wednesday's newsletter. My family and I have been going
through a medical crisis for about two weeks now. I appreciate
your patience and I hope things will settle down enough for me to
get back on track. Thanks - Laurie.
KEANU AT BAT
Keanu Reeves seems to be wishing for a slower change of pace. The
actor recently signed on to star in Hardball. The story is about a
down-on-his-luck ticket scalper who decides to coach an inner-city
Little League baseball team.
CULKIN TO THE ALTAR
Kieran Culkin, younger brother of Macaulay Culkin, has signed on to
co-star with Jena Malone and Jodie Foster in The Dangerous Lives of
Altar Boys. This is the film that Foster passed up Hannibal for.
CONFIRMED PROZAC
Jason Biggs will star with Christina Ricci in Prozac. Ricci will
also co-produce the picture which begins filming May 15.
THOMPSON GETS WIT-TY
Emma Thompson and Mike Nichols are getting together for an HBO
version of the Pulitzer Prize-winning off-Broadway play entitled
Wit. The TV movie will be shot in London in September.
SEINFELD AND THE LITTLE YADA, YADA, YADA
Jerry Seinfeld announced that he and his new wife Jessica Sklar are
expecting their first child in about six months.
GRAHAM GOES TO HELL
Heather Graham is in final negotiations to join Johnny Depp in the
new movie From Hell. Graham will play an Irish prostitute and Depp
will play a Scotland Yard detective investigating Jack the Ripper.
OLD BUT GOOD
The soundtracks to Easy Rider, Nashville, and FM have never been
available in the USA until now. The holdup was apparently due to
problems with clearance rights. The CDs will be released this
spring on Universal.
PRINCE CHARLES AND THE PINK PANTHER
The Prince of Wales has agreed to become an honorary member of the
Peter Sellers Appreciation Society which is scheduled to launch in
July. The event will coincide with the 20th anniversary of the
actor's death and a tribute at a London theater.
STRANGE BUT TRUE
Here's another one of those stories that seems too far in left
field to be real. Quentin Tarantino has written the liner notes
for a three-CD box set of Johnny Cash's music. The set is due in
stores May 23.
ICE ON MARS
Ice Cube has signed to star in John Carpenter's Ghost of Mars.
Filming begins in June.
POOR JOHN
John Cusack has been doing a lot of press lately for his new movie
High Fidelity. It seems that on every show he goes to he is asked
about his private love life with current girlfriend Neve Campbell.
On an episode of The View, Cusack handed the middle-aged female
interviewer his room key and told her that he loves older women.
The woman was offended even though Cusack meant it as a joke. I've
seen interviews with Cusack before where he's said that no one
understands his humor. I think he's right. Cusack reminds me a
lot of David Duchovny...extremely cute, intelligent, and severe dry
humor. No wonder I like him.
BULLOCK'S BAD NEWS
Sandra Bullock dropped everything and flew back to Texas following
news on the passing of her mother. Bullock was preparing for the
premiere of her new film 28 Days when she received the news.
GRANT JOINS ZELLWEGER
Hugh Grant has signed to star with Renee Zellweger in Bridget
Jones. Zellweger got the part about 2 months ago and has been
working non-stop on developing her English accent with a voice
coach. The project begins shooting in London next month.
SPLIT UP, BUT STILL WORKING
Billy Bob Thornton and Laura Dern have called it quits
romantically, but the two will still star together in Daddy and
Them. I remember when Dern and Jeff Goldblum broke up because I
got really, really happy that Jeff was available again for all
those Cinderella dreams I used to have about him. I'm not quite
has happy about her latest breakup. Oh well. I'm still waiting
for Tom Cruise, Christian Slater, Brad Pitt...
FEELING GUILTY OVER JAWS
Peter Benchley, who wrote the book Jaws, has made millions from the
sale of his book and of course, the movie. When the movie was
released, people all over the world developed a fear of great white
sharks which turned into a world-wide slaughter of the animals.
The beautiful creatures are all but extinct now and it has forced
the author to feel guilty about his book. In a recent article
Benchley said that if he knew what the book and the movie would do
to the shark population, he never would have had the book released
or turned into a film. Benchley has begun to tour the world saying
that the sharks are misunderstood animals and should be protected.
He's also asking Hollywood to stop making films about sharks for
the time being. Steven Spielberg and Richard Dreyfuss are
supporting the author in his quest to save the animal.
BELUSHI VOWS HE WILL NOT GO BACK TO CHICAGO
James Belushi who stars with David Duchovny and Minnie Driver in
Return to Me was asked to gain a little weight for the film. When
he arrived to the set, they almost let him go because he gained too
much weight. He swears that Chicago did it. The actor said he
can't go around the block in Chicago without stopping ten times for
a bite of food. He said LA is healthier with the salads and
protein burgers, but that Chicago could be his doom. I know what
he means. I wonder he went to the little dive about 2 blocks down
from Michael Jordan's restaurant. They have the best Italian subs
in the world.
LEEVES HAS FRIENDS WORRIED
I've seen a lot of reports lately about Jane Leeves who plays
Daphne on Frasier. Leeves, who has always been an attractive lady,
has lost an extreme amount of weight lately and is reminding those
who see her of Calista Flockhart of Ally McBeal. The actress says
she is fine and that she has always been on the thin side.
SCHWIMMER INJURES LEG
David Schwimmer of Friends has finished the boot camp that was
necessary for the actors of Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks' new
series Band of Brothers. Apparently Schwimmer has lost a lot of
weight and left the camp on crutches with a severe leg injury. No
word on how his appearance will affect Friends.
LORD OF THE NAKED BUM
Michael Flatley aka Lord of the Dance is apparently outraged over a
naked picture which he agreed to shoot for Cosmopolitan. The
dancer made sure he had complete approval over any shots taken
before the shoot began and now he may need that approval. The
magazine said that Flatley is extremely irate over the quality of
the pics, but he has complete authority to pull the shots if he so
chooses. No word as to what exactly he didn't like about them.
HERE'S ONE ONLY AN ACTOR CAN GET AWAY WITH
Jean Claude Van Damme was arrested last September after crashing
his Jeep Cherokee due to drunk driving. The actor is claiming that
the police saw him stumble to his Jeep and watched him drive away.
He's blaming the police for not stopping him before he drove away.
I never realized Van Damme was a good actor until I read about
this.
NO OSCAR, BUT STILL GOOD NIGHT FOR MOORE
Julianne Moore lost the Oscar for Best Actress, but she received
something even better when Hilary Swank accepted the award.
Moore's boyfriend and father of her 19-month-old son, leaned over
and gave her an engagement ring. No date has been announced since
the actress is currently working on Hannibal.
BURNS TO LIVE IN JFK JR'S APARTMENT
Edward Burns of Saving Private Ryan is taking up residence in the
loft apartment of the late John F Kennedy Jr. Burns has negotiated
to buy the pad for $2.5 million. Girlfriend Heather Graham will
most likely live with him when the property's co-op board approves
the sale.
BERRY TURNS HERSELF IN
Actress Halle Berry gave herself up to the LA police on Friday soon
after being charged with leaving the scene of a crash. Berry was
booked on a misdemeanor warrant and released. She is now awaiting
her day in court which should be early next month. She could face
up to one year in County Jail and a $100,000 fine.

LETTERMAN RIDING HIGH
Ever since Dave's return from heart surgery, his Late Show is
making Leno's heart skip a beat. The Late Show is right behind
Leno in the ratings now and continuing to gain strength. Dave is
up 30% since this time last year.
TEEN WITCH FLIES THE COOP
Sabrina, the Teenage Witch is leaving ABC for the WB network next
season. The WB has picked up the show through 2002.

The first installment in cinema's most famous series was a
worldwide phenomenon in the months leading up to its release and
quickly became one of the biggest box-office hits ever. THE PHANTOM
MENACE is set decades before the original series, in the era of the
Republic. The story follows the conflict over Naboo, a peaceful
planet governed by Queen Amidala (Portman) and threatened by the
Trade Federation, puppets of the evil Sith. The Jedi Knights
Qui-Gon Jinn (Neeson) and Obi-Wan Kenobi (McGregor) must save the
planet, with the help of the prodigal young Anakin Skywalker and
the computer-generated Jar Jar Binks. Meanwhile the Sith, in the
