3. IN THE NEWS
=======================================================
LITTLE MERMAID TO BIG STAGE
Beauty and the Beast, Lion King, and now The Little Mermaid.
Disney is turning The Little Mermaid into a stage musical for
Broadway. The show is still in early development and will most
likely be directed by Tony winner Matthew Bourne.
ER TO BROADWAY
Julianna Marguiles is in final negotiations to join Jason Robards
in John Robin Baitz's Ten Unknowns. The project is slated to open
Feb. 26, 2001.
ET TU MARTHA
Martha Plimpton will play the title role in Hedda Gabler April 12
to May 21 at the Long Wharf Theatre in New Haven, CT. Plimpton,
who has played everything from a pregnant addict on ER to a
troubled teen in Parenthood, is a veteran of the stage as well and
looks forward to her new project.
POSEY IN NEW YORK
Parker Posey will soon make her Broadway debut in Taller Than a
Dwarf. Also, Posey has signed on to join the cast of the Josie and
the Pussycats film.
TURNER GETTING BARE
Kathleen Turner is playing Mrs. Robinson in the London theatre
adaptation of The Graduate. In the 1967 film, Anne Bancroft
refused to be naked onscreen for the famous seduction scene.
Apparently, Turner as no such qualms. Kathleen comes out of the
bathroom in a towel which falls to the floor and she does the rest
of the scene completely naked.
ALLEN TO DREAMWORKS
Woody Allen has signed a three picture deal with DreamWorks, which
will finance some of the production costs for his upcoming movies.
LOTS OF LEGS TO THE SCREEN
Arach Attack, a movie about giant spiders, will begin filming this
September for a summer 2001 release. No word on casting yet.
BIGG PAYDAY
Jason Biggs of American Pie will star in Saving Silverman for a
reported $1.75 million. Production begins in June.
ROOKER TO REPLICANT
Michael Rooker (JFK, Days of Thunder) has signed on to join Jean
Claude Van Damme in the indie thriller Replicant.
OSMENT ALL OVER THE PLACE
Haley Joel Osment(The Sixth Sense) has reportedly signed on to play
Harry Potter for Chris Columbus. The only problem is the actor is
also said to be signed with Jude Law for Steven Spielberg's A.I.
These two films are supposed to be starting production around the
same time, so little Osment has to figure out how he can do two
films at once.
JURASSIC PARK 3
No one seems to know exactly what is going on with this film. The
film will be shot on the Hawaiian island of Maui now instead of in
New Zealand. Helen Hunt and Elizabeth Hurley are not in the film
now. Plus since Chris Klein is doing Rollerball, he won't be able
to join JP3. Also the script seems to be in yet another rewrite
and Kathleen Turner is being rumored for the lead. I give up.
I've heard about a hundred different things regarding this movie in
the last 6 months and none of it seems consistent one minute to the
next. So, the next thing you hear from me about this movie will be
where and when the premiere is...that is if the darn thing ever
gets underway.
HIGH FIDELITY WITH HUGE SOUNDTRACK
The High Fidelity movie soundtrack may very well be a bigger seller
than the film it's from. The soundtrack will feature 61 songs from
a wide range of artists like Elvis Costello, Bob Dylan, and Stevie
Wonder.
LIFE IMITATES BEAUTY
Mena Suvari, 21, starred in American Beauty playing a girl who
seduces her friend's father. Two weeks before the Oscars she
married Robert Brinkman, 38. Mena let the secret slip at a party
after the Oscars. She said that she is very happy, but that she
didn't want any comparisons being made to the film.
DUNAWAY TO PLAY DIANA
I love Faye Dunaway, but I really think this is the worst thing
I've heard in a long time. Faye Dunaway is set to play Princess
Diana in the British film The Biography - about Diana, Princess of
Wales. The film is based on the best-selling biography which
follows Diana's life until her tragic death. Dunaway would be the
last actress I would have ever thought would do something like
this.
IT'S OFFICIAL
Matt Damon and Winona Ryder have split. Damon broke up with the
actress and quickly moved out of their shared housed in Beverly
Hills. I was wondering why they arrived at the Oscar's separately.
DIRTY DANCING NEWS
Rumors have been flying that Britney Spears and Patrick Swayze will
be doing a Dirty Dancing 2. That's true...sort of. Britney is
writing a screenplay that she says is an updated version of the
1987 film. Swayze is also doing a dancing movie, but it is not
related to Dirty Dancing at all. The actor is writing a screenplay
which will also star his wife, but it's not DD2.

7. MF MOVIE OF THE WEEK
=======================================================
In honor of Anthony Perkins birthday this week..
Psycho (1960) (R)
Stars: Anthony Perkins, Janet Leigh, Martin Balsam, Vera Miles,
John Gavin, John McIntire, Simon Oakland, Vaughn Taylor, Frank
Albertson, Lurene Tuttle, John Anderson, Mort Mills, George
Eldredge, Sam Flint, Helen Wallace, Ted Knight, Virginia Gregg
The horror film that spawned a thousand imitations, not to mention
three sequels. A busty blonde pockets $40,000 in stolen cash
following a tryst with her divorced lover. Afterwards, she heads up
to a remote rural motel run by psychotic mama's boy Norman Bates.
The stage is now set for a classic tale of terror and depravity
that includes a cross-dressing murderer, stuffed corpses, the
ultimate Oedipal conflict, and, of course, the most notorious
shower scene ever filmed.
(Here is an interesting fact: "Psycho" was the first Hollywood film
to show an image of a toilet flushing.)
