Sincere apologies for no Wednesday edition of the newsletter.

the internet can be <g>. Because of the problem today's edition is
a little on the long side.
I hope everyone had a happy and safe St. Patricks Day!

Brian Kessler: When you first meet people all you notice are the
differences between you and them, but as time passes you start

3. IN THE NEWS
=======================================================
SPIELBERG GIVES HIS REASONS
Steven Spielberg said recently that the reason he backed out of
directing Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's Stone was because of
creative differences with the author J.K. Rowling. Spielberg was
upset that he would have to follow the book true to the author's
vision and not be able to elaborate or change the story in any way.
Also, Spielberg wanted Haley Joel Osment from the The Sixth Sense
to play Potter, but the author wanted a young British actor.
MORE SPIELBERG
Spielberg confirms that his next project will not be Minority
Report with Tom Cruise, but instead A.I. (Artificial Intelligence).
A.I. was to be Stanley Kubrick's next project. Minority, according
to Cruise, is still on, just pushed back until April of 2001.
Shooting for A.I. begins shooting in July for a summer 2001
release.
DISNEY PROVED RIGHT
Disney execs were patting themselves on the back after the
impressive opening for Mission To Mars. The movie, which had been
all but smeared by the press, won the weekend and brought in the
3rd highest total for March in history behind Liar Liar and Teenage
Mutant Ninja Turtles. Analysts are saying the movie-goers were
anxious for a film that would be a major event.
BEAUTY CLEANS UP...AGAIN
American Beauty snagged more awards at the Directors Guild of
America and the Screen Actors Guild award ceremonies. American
Beauty has won every major award for actress, actor, director, and
film since the 'award season' began. The last film I remember
doing this was Silence of the Lambs and it went on to sweep all of
the top awards at Oscars. Beauty will most likely be a repeat of
that performance.
COUPLE CONFIRMED
Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones are confirmed to be
starring in Traffic together. The only catch is that the couple
will never actually share a scene together. The two actors have
stated that they just wanted shared billing, but are looking
forward to sharing scenes in films in the future.
KIEFER DIVORCE
Kiefer Sutherland filed for divorce from his wife of three years
this week after a separation that had lasted since June 30. The
day after the announcement, Kiefer held a press conference to scorn
the press for blowing the matter out of proportion. He said that
he has never met a better woman than his wife and that the split
was mutual with no hard feelings between the two.
WHOOPI AND LOVE MAKING MARS
Whoopi Goldberg and Courtney Love are said to be in final
negotiations to star together in John Carpenter's Ghost of Mars
sci-fi pic. Love will play the leader of an expedition to Mars
while Goldberg would play the head science officer. The casting
seems like science fiction too...one of those weird-but-true type
stories.
HANKS ONBOARD FOR THE POLAR EXPRESS
Tom Hanks is set to produce and star in The Polar Express. The
film is a Christmas fantasy about a train conductor who takes kids
to the North Pole to meet Santa Claus.
REED PLEADS NOT GUILTY
Film critic Rex Reed pleaded not guilty this week to charges of
shoplifting 3 CDs from Tower Records in Manhattan. The trial
begins April 18.
WIGAND GETS HIS OSCAR TICKETS
Jeffrey Wigand, the tobacco industry whistleblower who was the
subject of The Insider, will be attending the Oscars on Sunday.
Reports were flying this week that Wigand phoned the Academy to
request tickets and was told that the ceremony "wasn't the Super
Bowl and that tickets are in short supply." Later in the week,
reports circulated that Wigand was not invited because the actor
who portrayed him, Russell Crowe, didn't like him. Then finally
Disney had come up with the tickets for Wigand and even said that
they may take him up on stage if The Insider wins for best picture.
WRESTLING ADS TOSSED
The USA and UPN networks have both cancelled any and all ads
concerning the upcoming new release Beyond the Mat, a film about
wrestling. The two networks depend on wrestling for the majority
of their audience, so they pulled the ads as not to offend
wrestling fans. Rumors are flying that WWF's Vince McMahon put
pressure on the networks to pull the ads or he'd pull his
wrestling.
OSCAR POLL UPROAR
All of Hollywood seems to be in a tizzy over the reports that The
Wall Street Journal had been polling Academy voters to find out how
they will vote for the upcoming Oscars. Hundreds of actors,
directors, and studio execs have called the practice shameful and
unthinkable that a respected publication would lower themselves for
a few extra circulations.
BETTER LATE THAN NEVER
Last year Lost Souls starring Winona Ryder was due for release in
October of 1999, but then was pushed back a full year due to
extensive reshoots by the director. Now New Line Cinema has
decided that depending on what happens with this weekend's release
of Final Destination, Lost Souls could be in theaters in May.
3 SIGNED, LOTS TO GO
Alec Baldwin, Ben Affleck, and Cuba Gooding Jr. have all officially
signed on to star in Pearl Harbor. Director Michael Bay has been
looking at all of Hollywood's talent under the age of 25 for the
lead role in the film. Gene Hackman is still in talks to take over
the role vacated by Kevin Costner early this month.
KLEIN SET FOR ROLLERBALL
Chris Klein has been signed for John Mcteirnan's Rollerball remake.
Shooting should begin as early as June. Klein has been working
non-stop since American Pie and I actually saw an article that
called him the next Matt Dillon. Hopefully, he won't have the
career stall that Dillon experienced.
DEL TORO FOR BLADE 2
Guillermo del toro has been signed to direct Blade 2 which will
star Wesley Snipes and Kris Kristofferson. The casting of
Kristofferson is a bit of a shocker since he was killed off in the
first film. The film should begin shooting any day to allow for a
summer 2000 release.
BACKBONE TOO
del Toro is also signed up to direct the Devil's Backbone. The
film is a ghost story set in an orphanage during the Spanish Civil
War. Shooting will begin in June and then del Toro will quickly
switch over to Blade 2.
MORE TOMATOES
Andy Fickman has signed on to write a script for Attack of the
Killer Tomatoes 2. Fickman may also direct to save money on the
budget. No information on casting, release dates, or the answer to
the big question...Why bother??
CUSACK CHAT
John Cusack and other actors of High Fidelity will be participating
in online chats to help promote the film. Cusack's chat will be on
Monday, March 20 at 9pm at ET's official website, www.etonline.com.
MORE HEAVY METAL
Heavy Metal F.A.K.K. 2 is finally getting a premiere...sort of.
The sequel will be shown on the Encore network on July 10th.
IF I WAS AN OSCAR, WHERE WOULD I BE??
The Oscars seem to be cursed with bad luck this year. First 4,000
ballots are missent and now a shipment of 40 of the Oscar
statuettes have been stolen. Seems someone pulled a truck up to a
pallet filled with boxes of golden Oscars, loaded them up, and
drove away from a Roadway Express dock. I guess there's a bright
side to all of this...Billy Crystal will certainly have a lot of
material for his monologue.
RULES OF ENGAGEMENT DISPUTE
Former Secretary of the Navy-turned screenwriter James Webb fought
a short lived battle with producer Scott Rudin over changes made to
his original script for Rules of Engagement set for release in
April. Webb confronted Paramount Studios and Rudin saying that the
scenes added to the film compromised it's authenticity and
credibility. Webb was so upset that he took his name off his own
film. Paramount says that the scenes in question were recently
modified to Webb's approval and his name was put back on the film.
MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 2 VIDEO
As we reported a couple of newsletters ago, Limp Bizkit will be
doing the theme song to MI2 thanks to Tom Cruise being such a huge
fan of the group. Well now info about the music video is coming
out that the lead man for Bizkit has approached Tom Cruise about
appearing in the video. The idea is that the group would sing the
song to Cruise who at first would be unaffected, but by the end
would be dancing like Risky Business. Cruise's schedule is
extremely busy these days, so he may not do the video, but it would
be pretty neat if it all works out.
ANOTHER WEIRD-BUT-TRUE
How's this for odd...Mick Jagger producing a WWII drama starring a
very pregnant Kate Winslet. The film Enigma also stars Dougray
Scott and will be released in late 2000 or early 2001.
BLAIR STARTS
The Blair Witch 2 production has started shooting in Maryland. The
set locations are secret and the production company is trying to
keep all film related info from the press. The crew for the sequel
is about 300 people strong...about 290 more than the original.
FORBIDDEN PLANET
New Line Cinema has gotten the remake rights to MGM's 1956 classic
Forbidden Planet. Casting is said to include numerous Hollywood
heavyweights, but no one is saying who. In fact everything about
the production is being kept secret.
WILLIAMS TO BLAME CANADA
Robin Williams is set to perform Blame Canada from the South Park
movie on the Oscar telecast March 26th. Can't help but giggle at
the mental image of this one.
DICAPRIO SIBLING IN TROUBLE AGAIN
Leonardo DiCaprio's stepbrother has been arrested again, but this
time for suspicion of attempted murder and making terrorist threats
against his girlfriend. He's currently being held for $1 million
bail. DiCaprio had no comment at all this week.
NO RESPECT
Comedian Rodney Dangerfield is in stable condition at a Las Vegas
hospital. Dangerfield's agent, publicist, and doctor's have all
refused to say way the actor was hospitalized.
GRAMMER IN BROADWAY
Kelsey Grammer has signed on to star as the title role in Macbeth
this summer. No word on Lady Macbeth, dates, nor a venue.
<---------------------------TV----------------------------->
NBC MAY CANCEL SHOW
After the premiere of God, the Devil, and Bob, NBC was flooded with
calls protesting the show and demanding it's removal from TV. The
show still made killing in the ratings despite the overwhelming
number of people who changed the station. No official word at this
time if the show saw it's first and last run.
SLEEPERS SURPRISE AGAIN
Sleepers was a huge sleeper hit in theaters in 1996 and it was
another sleeper hit last Saturday night too. The movie beat out
the competition and grabbed the number one spot. ABC was worried
that the shows content and severe editing would keep viewers away,
but it held up.
MTV HEARTTHROB SIGNS FOR NEW SHOWS
Carson Daly, 26, of MTV's Total Request Live signed a contract with
MTV and CBS to develop new shows and continue on as host for both
networks. Daly will continue to host MTV's TRL, but will also
become executive producer as well as hosting Miss Teen USA and Miss
USA beauty pageants for CBS.
BUFFY GOES LESBIAN
Two characters on Buffy the Vampire Slayer will have sparks fly in
upcoming episodes. Willow and Tara will have a relationship that
producers don't want to consider lesbian, just a strong emotional
bond. The two actresses have not commented on how they feel about
the direction their characters will take.
SOPRANOS CHASE STAYS PUT
The Sopranos creator David Chase has renewed his contract with HBO
for a 4th season. The deal calls for HBO's parent company Time
Warner to finance If I Fell, a big-screen romance drama that will
be written and directed by Chase.
X-FILES RUMBLINGS
David Duchovny was recently offered $1 million to stay on for one
more season of The X-Files. Co-star Gillian Anderson is already
signed on for the next season, but Duchovny has been holding out
for more money. No word if $1 million is enough, however. If
Duchovny decides to exit the show, Fox has stated that another
actor will be cast as Mulder and the show will return to Vancouver
for shooting.
CLOONEY DENIES ER REPORTS
A few weeks ago reports were circulating that ER was working on an
extremely big deal to get George Clooney back to ER to have a
couple of closing scenes with Julianna Margulies, who is exiting
the show this season.
The reports said that Clooney would have 3 scenes and be paid $3
million for them. Now Clooney is saying that no one from ER has
ever talked to him about returning, but that he would be open to
the idea.
NIELSON TO STOOGES
Leslie Nielsen has signed on to host AMC's new weekly Three Stooges
series. The show, New York University of Knuckleheads (NYUK)
starts April 1st with 2 never-before-seen-on-TV Stooges segments.
BE AFRAID
Jerry Springer has signed a deal to star in a new game show from
the people who created MTV's Singled Out. The still untitled game
show will be a "high-stakes game show that will break new ground in
interactive television." So a game show about how many times you
can curse in a minute and how far you can throw a chair sounds
about right.
WILL AND GRACE
Will & Grace will go into syndication starting in 2002. Certain
details of the new deal depend on long the show remains on
primetime on NBC.

William Shatner sold over 23,000 shares of his Priceline.com stock

actor sold the shares was to acquire funds in which to get involved
as a financial partner in Paramount's new Star Trek TV series.
Rumors are also saying the George Takei has made similar
arrangements with the studio.
