SINGER-ACTRESS AALIYAH DIES IN PLANE CRASH
Sadly, news came over the weekend that 22-year-old singer-actress
Aaliyah, was killed in the Bahamas on Saturday along with eight
others as her charter plane crashed shortly after takeoff from
Marsh Harbour. Despite good weather the plane took off, it
traveled about 200 feet, then crashed into marshy land. Aaliyah
and the others in her party had come to the Bahamas to shoot a
music video and were returning to the US. Aaliyah made her acting
debut in 2000 co-starring in "Romeo Must Die" with Jet Li.
Aaliyah also stars in "Queen of the Damned" due out next April
and also was scheduled to appear in the two "Matrix" sequels.
There's now word whether she wrapped her footage for "The
Matrix." {Our condolences to Aaliyah's family, friend's and fans,
as well as those of the eight other victims.}

SONY FINED FOR DEATH ON 'SPIDER-MAN' SET
E! Online reports that California's Occupational Safety and
Health division has slapped Columbia Pictures with $59,000 in
fines stemming from a March accident that claimed the life of
welder Tim Holcombe while working on the set of "Spider-Man." The
decision comes after officials determined poor engineering and a
handful of safety code violations were to blame for the man's
death. Holcombe was killed when a crane hauling a large metal
cage suddenly toppled over on its side smashing into a platform
on which he and another welder were working.

'KUNG FU' TV SERIES HEADED TO BIG SCREEN
Ed Spielman, creator of the popular 1970s television series "Kung
Fu" starring David Carradine will write a feature-length
adaptation of the show for Warner Brothers, Daily Variety
reported on Tuesday. Spielman will write a first draft for the
film, to be called "American Samurai," and serve as executive
producer. http://www.variety.com

WARNER BROS. EYEING 'HARD BOILED'
Warner Bros. Pictures is negotiating with Frank Miller and Geoff
Darrow for the feature rights to their 1992 comic book "Hard
Boiled," Variety reports. David Fincher ("Fight Club") is
attached to direct and Nicolas Cage to star. The story revolves
around a killer robot that thinks he's a tax collector and was
published by Dark Horse Comics.

ABSOLUTE ENTERTAINMENT ACQUIRES 'COUSINS'
MGM-based Absolute Entertainment has acquired the pitch
"Cousins." The film, according to Variety, follows a young
inner-city man who inherits a sprawling ancestral home in the
Deep South, only to discover it is haunted by ghosts with
decidedly comedic plans to bring warring factions of his family
together.

FERRELL IN 'DON WAYNE WYOMING'
Paramount-based Icon Prods. has made a deal for the script 'Don
Wayne Wyoming," with Will Ferrell ("Saturday Night Live")
attached to star. The comedy follows two guys who pursue their
lifelong dream of driving an 18-wheel truck.

'MAX KEEBLE'S' LIL' ROMEO
ChartAttack reports that rapper Lil' Romeo will perform a cameo
appearence in the upcoming Disney film, "Max Keeble's Big Move,"
set to hit theaters Oct. 5. In addition, Lil' Romeo is also
contributing the song, "Bust A Move," which was originally by
Young MC, but has been re-worked by Lil Romeo to include new
lyrics. http://www.chartattack.com {Thanks to Greatinformer}

NEW 'BENJI' FILM TO STAR SHELTER DOGS
Director Joe Camp wants to cast all 26 canine roles in his new
"Benji" film from animal shelters. The creator of the popular
children's movies toured Atlanta shelters this week and said the
lead role will probably go to a dog he found in Chicago. "Benji
Returns - The Promise of Christmas," is set for release during
the 2002 holiday season.

DREAMWORKS NABS 'MOIST'
DreamWorks Pictures has acquired "Moist," the as-yet-unpublished
first novel from screenwriter Mark Haskell Smith with an eye
towards Barry Sonnenfeld to direct. "Moist" follows a morgue
attendant whose task of transporting a severed limb to the Los
Angeles County Coroner takes a wild turn when the head of L.A.'s
Mexican Mafia, to whom it belongs, comes looking for it.

SPIELBERG TO DIRECT 'CATCH ME IF YOU CAN'
Steven Spielberg is clearing his schedule so he can direct
Leonardo DiCaprio in the true-life story "Catch Me If You Can."
DiCaprio stars in the film as the youngest man ever to make the
FBI's 10 most wanted list. Production on "Catch Me If You Can"
is expected to get underway in early January.

WINONA RYDER OUT OF 'SECRET PLANTING'
Winona Ryder was hospitalized over the weekend where she received
treatment for what her camp called a "stomach bug." She's
expected to fully recover but, in the meantime, the 29-year-old
actress is dropping out of her lead role in the indie film "Lily
and the Secret Planting," E! Online reported. "I am terribly
disappointed," Ryder said in a statement. "I fell in love with
this script as soon as I read it and was really looking forward
to working with [director] Hettie McDonald. I hope to find an
opportunity to work with [him] in the future."

HYDE PARK TAKES ON 'SPRINGER'S GAMBIT,' 'PRINCE CHARMING'
Variety reports that Hyde Park Entertainment has optioned
novelist W.L. Ripley's "Springer's Gambit," with Kurt Russell
attached to star. The thriller centers on a mob accountant who
turns to a former Secret Service agent for protection from the
gangster who wants him dead and the cops who want him as a
witness. In related news, The Hollywood Reporter reports that
Hyde Park is in negotiations to acquire "Long Ago and Far Away"
(aka "Prince Charming"). The pitch combines several classic fairy
tales to tell the story of Snow White, Cinderella and Sleeping
Beauty, who all find themselves married to the same Prince
Charming.

Last Thursday we reported that Kate Hudson ("Almost Famous")
filed a lawsuit against her former personal assistant, claiming
that the woman secretly spent $63,000 of the star's money on
herself. According to the lawsuit, Margaret Miller spent the
$63,000 on limousines, hotel rooms, clothes, plane tickets,
beauty treatments and other personal expenses, often while Hudson
was out of town. This week Miller's attorney Arthur Barens denied
the claims saying Miller "never embezzled one dime." "We're going
to file a cross-complaint against these people," Barens said. "We
will deny the allegations as not true and not supported by the
facts. It's my client to whom they are indebted for a
considerable amount of overtime wages."
