'KNIGHT RIDER: THE MOVIE' GETS GREENLIGHT
While talking to the Popcorn website, David Hasselhoff revealed
that a Knight Rider feature film will happen. "We made the deal
on Friday. We're bringing it back as a feature film," said
Hasselhoff, who starred in the original TV series. "Right now
we're just coming up with the concept. We don't want to change
too much. We don't want to recast. We want to keep Michael Knight
as Michael Knight... maybe a little bit older like I am. And then
we're going to have William Daniels, who's the voice of K.I.T.T.
come back. Edward Mulhare, who passed away, we're going to bring
back as a hologram. Then, we're talking a little about making it
like The Matrix, taking it a little bit into the future,"
Hasselhoff added.

VIN DIESEL IN 'XXX' MODE
Variety reports that Vin Diesel has signing a $10 million deal to
star in "XXX," an action drama described as an extreme James Bond
picture with hip-hop flair. The Revolution Studios project
reteams Diesel with "The Fast and the Furious" director Rob Cohen
and producer Neal Moritz. Filming starts in the fall for a July
2002 release. In addition to rumors that Diesel could join Arnold
Schwarzenegger in "Terminator 3," he is also being courted by
Universal to return for a "Pitch Black" sequel, the trade
reported.

VOIGHT JOINS 'SUPERBABIES' CAST
Jon Voight is set to join Toddlers Leo, Myles and Gerry
Fitzgerald, Scott Baio, Vanessa Angel and Skyler Shaye in the
comedy adventure film "Baby Geniuses 2: Superbabies," a sequel to
1999's "Baby Geniuses."

ANOTHER 'FRIDAY' FOR NEW LINE
New Line Cinema is moving forward on "Friday After Next," the
third installment of the studio's "Friday" franchise. According
to The Hollywood Reporter, The project will go into production in
the fall for a Thanksgiving 2002 release, with cast members Ice
Cube, Mike Epps, Don "D.C." Curry and John Witherspoon back on
board.

'THE MASK 2' IN THE WORKS
According to Variety, New Line has tapped Lance Khazei to pen
"The Mask 2," a sequel to the 1994 Jim Carrey hit. The trade
reports that Carrey looks unlikely to reprise his role in the
film. While the sequel's budget has yet to be set, New Line is
focusing on features in the $10 million to $50 million budget
range, making Carrey a seemingly cost-prohibitive prospect.

GLAAD NOT HAPPY WITH 'SILENT BOB'
In 1999 Kevin Smith was dogged by Catholics over his religious
comedy "Dogma." Now he's taking some heat from the Gay and
Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation over what it calls the
"overwhelmingly homophobic" tone of his new flick, "Jay and
Silent Bob Strike Back." "I know Kevin Smith is not a homophobe,"
says Scott Seomin, GLAAD's entertainment media director. "But we
feel the movie he wrote and directed is overwhelmingly
homophobic, and there's a huge potential for a negative impact on
gay people, particularly gay youth." Smith responded to the
negative attention on the website of his production company say,
"Neither Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back nor myself are
homophobic," he wrote. "If anything, we're overtly gay-friendly.
"I swear, I caught it from the right wing on Dogma, and now I'm
catching it from the left wing on this flick," he adds. "Which am
I, people, a bleeding heart liberal or Bible-thumping
conservative? And when the hell do I get to make a movie in which
I don't have to explain myself afterwards?"

'CURIOUS GEORGE' ON THE FAST TRACK
Universal is teaming up with Ron Howard and Brian Grazer's
production company, Imagine Entertainment, to bring "Curious
George" to the big screen. Curious George: The Movie had been in
development as a live-action film, but, due to the success of
Dreamworks' "Shrek" Curious George's cinematic debut will be
completely computer-generated. "I tried to lick it as live action
then live action with animated, but it's been hard," Grazer tells
The Hollywood Reporter. "George the monkey has to have power and
be able to express power and it's difficult to do that with a
live-action mix. I have to admit the amazing success of Shrek
convinced me that this is the exact way to do it." Grazer says a
team of screenwriters are currently reworking drafts to reflect
the new CGI format and the film could be in theaters by 2003.

WARNER BROS. PICKS UP ROMANTIC COMEDY
Warner Bros. Pictures has purchased an untitled romantic comedy
pitch from Jon Lucas and Scott Moore, according to Variety. Set
in the world of high-priced divorce attorneys, the story is about
finding love in the most unlikely places.

'ROLLERBALL' IN THEATERS FEB. 8
MGM has slated John McTiernan's "Rollerball" remake for wide
release Feb. 8. Variety reports that The film was shuffled around
on MGM's summer 2001 schedule several times before being pushed
back to 2002 to allow studio execs more time to work on an
effective marketing campaign. "Rollerball" stars Chris Klein, LL
Cool J and Rebecca Romijn-Stamos.

TURTELTAUB FINDS 'NATIONAL TREASURE'
Jon Turteltaub ("Disney's The Kid") has come aboard to direct the
caper story "National Treasure." The film tells of a secret code
in the U.S. Constitution that bears the whereabouts of a treasure
buried in the 1700s. Shooting is expected to begin in March.

JERRY LEWIS COMEDY 'THE PATSY' REMAKE
An updated version of the 1964 Jerry Lewis comedy "The Patsy" is
underway at Pandemonium Films. In the original a star comedian
dies and his comedy team decides to train a nobody to fill his
shoes on his TV show. They choose an inept bellboy (Lewis) and
discover that he's more incompetent than they imagined. In the
update, a man is unwittingly turned into a reality television
star when executives trick him into one life-threatening
situation after another. Michael Kalesniko ("Bubble Boy") will
pen the script.

DAVID ARQUETTE LIKES 'SPAM'
According to The Hollywood Reporter, David Arquette has signed on
to star in the action-comedy "Spam on Rye." The film centers on a
young man who, after "borrowing" a valet car from a gangster to
impress his date, spends an evening on the town that results in a
carjacking, kidnapping and televised car chase through the
streets of Los Angeles with a mob boss, two crooked cops and a
shotgun-wielding movie producer in pursuit, reports the trade.

'FAST AND FURIOUS' STAR WALKS 'TIMELINE'
Paul Walker has signed on to star in Paramount Pictures'
"Timeline," based on the novel by Michael Crichton. Walker will
join Gerard Butler ("Dracula 2000") in a time-travel story about
a group of young grad school scientists who go back to the 14th
century to rescue their mentor, Professor Johnston, via a time
machine.

MARIAH CAREY SUFFERS EMOTIONAL, PHYSICAL BREAKDOWN
In a previous newsletter, we reported that pop star Mariah Carey
had checked herself into a hospital to treat "extreme
exhaustion." Apparently it's a little more serious than that.
Carey's publicist Cindi Berger says, "Mariah has suffered an
emotional and physical breakdown. She is just taking it day by
day (and) is resting and improving." Asked whether Carey's
problems were precipitated by any particular work-related or
personal issues, Berger said "No, something like this is always a
cumulative effect."

Instead, its tour will resume on Aug. 24 in Milwaukee. "A.J.'s

in transitional care."

'WEST WING' CREATOR TALKS DRUG USE
On April 15 Aaron Sorkin, creator of NBC's popular, Emmy-winning
drama "The West Wing" was arrested at Burbank airport when
airport employees found marijuana, rock cocaine or crack, and
hallucinogenic mushrooms in his bag. Sorkin told TV Guide in its
new issue available on Friday that his arrest for drug possession
was the result of sporadic, not chronic drug use and that he
indulged only during his rare down time. "It was stupid. I had
just been to the wrap party (celebrating the final episode) the
night before. It was a stupid way of celebrating that the
pressure was off."

NO-SHOW FOR 'BECKER' CAST MEMBERS
"Becker' cast members Terry Farrell, Hattie Winston, Alex Desert,
Shawnee Smith and Saverio Guerra were no-shows at the series'
first table read of the season. "Becker" star Ted Danson and
guest star Rhea Perlman did attend and went ahead with the read.
The five supporting cast members called in sick Wednesday, but
there are indications that the actors haven't renegotiated their
salaries since the show's debut and are looking to at least
double their paychecks to return.

THIESSEN TO GUEST STAR ON 'JUST SHOOT ME'
Tiffani Amber Thiessen has signed to appear on three-episodes of
NBC's Thursday hit "Just Shoot Me," a role that could turn into a
full-time gig. The "Beverly Hills, 90210" alumna will play a new
sex columnist for the series' fictional Blush magazine. Her
episodes will likely air in November.

LAWRENCE ON BOARD 'WOLF LAKE'
Sharon Lawrence will join the cast of rookie CBS thriller "Wolf
Lake," marking her first dramatic series role since leaving "NYPD
Blue," according to Variety. "Wolf Lake," which also stars Lou
Diamond Phillips, Tim Matheson, Graham Greene, Bruce McGill, Mary
Elizabeth Winstead, Paul Wasilewski and Scott Bairstow follows
the spooky happenings in a small town where residents can morph
into wolves.

KELLY MARTIN JOINS 'THE COURT'
Former "Life Goes On" star Kelly Martin has joined the cast of
the ABC drama "The Court" opposite Sally Field. Martin will star
as a Supreme Court clerk, replacing Alicia Witt who departed the
series earlier this summer. Martin will inherit the role of
Claudia Padgett, an ambitious young law clerk who works under
tough, liberal Supreme Court Justice Audrey Karlin (Field).

( *** S P O I L E R S A H E A D ***)

Planet of the Apes (Rated PG-13)
Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Tim Roth, Helena Bonham Carter,
Estella Warren and Michael Clarke Duncan.
Release Date: July 27, 2001

Review by Susan Granger
SSG Syndicate
http://www.susangranger.com

In Tim Burton's re-envisioning of Pierre Boulle's novel which
became a 1968 cult classic, the sci-fi premise remains the same:
an astronaut (Mark Wahlberg) crash-lands on a bizarre, brutal
world where apes are the dominant species and humans serve them.
When captured, he's taken to the misty mountain kingdom of Ape
City by the orangutan slave trader (Paul Giamatti). He meets
defiant human rebels (Kris Kristofferson, Estella Warren) and
discovers the socio-political conflict between the tyrannical
General (Tim Roth) and his intimidating aide (Michael Clarke
Duncan) and a passionate, liberal Senator's daughter (Helena
Bonham Carter) who believes humans should not be subjugated by
simians.

Tim Burton's iconoclastic vision of this fascistic,
chimpanzee-dominated society is brought to life primarily by
six-time Oscar-winning make-up artist Rick Baker ("Gorillas in
the Mist," "Mighty Joe Young") who, incredibly, in a
tour-de-force, transforms the actors into apes. Credit production
designer Rick Heinrichs and cinematographer Philippe Rousselot
too. Unlike the original, in William Broyles Jr.'s rather dull
screenplay, the humans are not mute and, despite the rumors,
there's no inter-species sex. Clunky Mark Wahlberg is hardly a
heroic figure, as Charlton Heston was in the original. But Heston
does turn up as an aged, ailing ape, and once again, in a quite
different context, utters his famous line: "Damn them all to
hell!" But, basically, Paul Giamatti steals the picture, offering
much needed comic relief. The conclusion, while not the Statue
of Liberty, offers a surprising, if very contrived, twist.

On the Granger Movie Gauge of 1 to 10, "Planet of the Apes" is a
dark, primal, action-packed 5, proving "The smarter we become,
the more dangerous we get."

8. Answer to this weeks trivia is..
================================================

B) Edward G. Robinson was the original
choice for the role and even shot a screen test with
Charlton Heston. Robinson withdrew from the film
because he feared his weak heart would make it
impossible for him to endure the hours needed for the
constant daily makeup applications and filming. The
role went to Maurice Evans instead.

In the Coming Soon section, the cast & director for Rush Hour 2
are the same as the movie above it, The Princess Diaries.

And to think I proof read the newsletter before sending it out.
The cast for Rush Hour 2 should have been...Jackie Chan, Chris
