================================================
JOHN WOO'S 'TURTLES' TOON
Director John Woo ("Mission: Impossible 2" "Face/Off") is
developing a computer-animated feature film based on the "Teenage
Mutant Ninja Turtles" franchise. "I've always loved the 'Teenage
Mutant Ninja Turtles,'" Woo said in a statement. "It's one of the
greatest action-adventure properties ever." The picture will
return the rad shelled heroes "to their darker, edgier comic book
roots," according to "Turtles" co-creator Peter Laird. The
picture is tentatively scheduled to hit theaters around Christmas
2002.
ACTOR' CONTRACT NEGOTIATIONS STALLED
With just 10 days to go before the deadline expires, negotiations
for a new Screen Actors Guild film and TV contract appear to have
stalled, with very little give-and-take between reps for the
union and producers. According to an industry source familiar
with the talks, "There is no appreciable progress. They're not
doing sh*t. (The unions) are still doing presentations on what
all their different proposals mean."
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Harvey Keitel is set to star
in and produce the dark comedy "Murder Trust" for Millennium
Films. The trade reports that the film is based on a true story
centering on a group of five working-class barflies who come up
with a scheme to kill people in order to get their insurance
money. But one of the guys they try to kill (Keitel) won't seem
to die, and they must come up with several ways to off him.
FOX SEARCHLIGHT JOINS SONY IN FAKE ADS
Following the false advertising fiasco's that have engulfed Sony
in controversy, rival studio Fox Searchlight Pictures has now
acknowledged that, yes, it too turned out fake commercials. Daily
Variety reports the Fox marketing department planted one of its
own as a fan in national TV spots for the movie "Waking Ned
Devine." This may be nothing new, and it probably isn't, but
recently Fox Searchlight boasted about "truth" in advertising for
print ads of its current release "Sexy Beast." Those ads urged
moviegoers to "read honest-to-God rave reviews at
www.foxsearchlight.com."
'DRAGON' NOT FOR KIDS SAYS JET LI
On his Web site, Jet Li, the Chinese action star this week warned
parents to keep their kids away from his upcoming movie "Kiss of
the Dragon." "The movie utilizes very realistic, hard-core,
action-packed fight sequences,'' Li said. "I'm very proud of the
final result and hope that my fans enjoy the movie, however, this
is a movie that I do not feel is appropriate for children. "Kiss
of the Dragon" is an adult movie and deals with adult themes of a
man keeping his promise and understanding his responsibilities.
The action scenes are also directed towards an adult audience and
as such the movie is rated R. I ask that you please do not take
your young children to see "Kiss of the Dragon." He added, "If
you would like a movie to share with your children please wait a
few more months. On November 2 my film The One will be released.
This is a PG-13 film and more appropriate for younger children to
view." http://www.jetli.com
McGREGOR PREPS FOR 'ADAM'
Ewan McGregor is headed for Scotland, where he and Tilda Swinton
will topline the Scottish feature "Young Adam" for director David
Mackenzie. "Adam" is about a drifter who finds work on a barge
traveling between Glasgow and Edinburgh only to discover a
floating female corpse.
'ANACONDA 2,' 'BEVERLY HILLS COP IV' NEWS
E! Onlines Anderson Jones reports that Jennifer Lopez (aka J.Lo)
will not star in the sequel to the campy creature-feature
Anaconda, now on the fast track at Columbia. Meanwhile, Eddie
Murphy, who voices Shrek's donkey sidekick, remains attached to
Beverly Hills Cop IV, from a script by guitarist turned
screenwriter Jason Richman.
DEL TORO BREAKS WRIST FILMING 'HUNTED'
Academy Award-winner Benicio Del Toro has broken his wrist while
doing his own stuntwork in "The Hunted" forcing a delay in
filming. According to a Paramount Pictures spokeswoman, Del Toro
broke his wrist as he dived for a knife during a fight scene with
Tommy Lee Jones. "This probably won't impede the production
process," the spokeswoman said. "Even if he is in a cast for a
few months, there
are ways to work around it. He can work with a brace or a glove."
"The Hunted" is scheduled for release in spring 2002.
SIERCHIO TO PEN 'HEAVEN'
Variety reports that Castle Rock Entertainment has hired scribe
Tom Sierchio to pen the screenplay for "Made in Heaven," a remake
of the 1987 Alan Rudolph film of the same title. "Made in Heaven"
centers on two souls who meet in heaven and fall in love.
However, their happiness is short-lived when circumstances
separate them and they end up on earth with new identities and
are forced to struggle to find each other and fall in love again.
The original starred Timothy Hutton and Kelly McGillis, and was
released by Lorimar Pictures.
NICOLAS CAGE EYEING 'GHOST'
According to Variety, Nicolas Cage is in early negotiations to
star in "Ghost Rider," the Steve Norrington-directed live-action
adaptation of the Marvel Comics franchise, at Miramax's Dimension
Films unit. "Ghost Rider" is a drama about a motorcycle stuntman
named Johnny Blaze, who sells his soul to a dark force to save
the life of his girlfriend. When the pact goes awry, Blaze
becomes a fiery demonlike entity who takes out his wrath on bad
guys. In related news, Cage has been tapped to receive the 16th
annual American Cinematheque Award. The tribute, slated for
broadcast Oct. 10 on TNT, will be hosted by Samuel L. Jackson
with co-chairs Jerry Bruckheimer, Jonathan Dolgen and Gerry
Harrington.
McQUARRIE ON BOARD 'CHIMERA'
Oscar-winning screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie ("The Usual
Suspects") has come aboard to develop with an eye to direct
Warner Bros. "Chimera" for Joel Silver and Robert Zemeckis' Dark
Castle Entertainment, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The
project is about a group of boat salvagers who find a lost 1953
passenger ship floating aimlessly in a remote region of the
Bering Sea. After claiming the ship and attempting to tow it to
land, mysterious things begin to happen aboard the derelict
vessel.

TV PIG SAVED FROM SLAUGHTER
Grunty the pig was saved from slaughter Thursday when a judge
ruled that the TV star sow did not pose a threat to Britain's
efforts to end foot-and-mouth disease. The 6-year-old pig, kept
as a pet on a farm in southwest England, was condemned for
slaughter after a nearby farm visited by her owner was found to
be infected. High Court Justice Michael Harrison denied a
government request for an injunction that would have forced
Grunty's owner, Rosemary Upton, to allow slaughtermen onto her
property. The pig did achieve a measure of British television
fame after being selected by Channel 5 to become a "My Fair Lady"
of swine. Like the heroine of George Bernard Shaw's "Pygmalion,"
Grunty underwent intensive etiquette training for "Pig at the
Ritz," a program about a pig so well-mannered it could daintily
eat at one of London's finest restaurants.
'WEST WING' CREATOR ESCAPES JAIL TIME

enroll in a drug rehab program. His progress will be monitored
through a series of periodic court hearings and if he manages to
stay sober for 18 months the drug charges will be wiped from his
record.
ANNE HECHE LOOKING FOR OWN TV SERIES

of regular series duty. It's been reported that Heche will begin
meeting with heads of networks and studios next month in an
attempt to seal a deal to develop a series for her to star in.
'BABY BOB' ON CBS

starring Joely Fisher. The show will revolve around the life of a
family in suburban Ohio through the eyes of their talking baby.

( *** N O S P O I L E R S ***)
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (Rated PG-13)
Starring: Angelina Jolie, Jon Voight, Daniel Craig, Iain Glen,
Leslie Phillips.
Release Date: June 15, 2001
Review by Susan Granger
SSG Syndicate
http://www.susangranger.com
(Note: In March, my son, Don Granger, was named President of
Mutual Pictures, which co-partnered this film with Paramount. For
my own integrity, I feel this personal disclosure is necessary.)
There are video-gamers and non-gamers. I fall into the latter
category. I knew nothing about this brave, bold, buff female hero
clad in black hotpants and a tight T-shirt. Intrepid, acrobatic
British heiress/archeologist Lara Croft has been described as a
cross between James Bond and Indiana Jones. So when she discovers
a ticking clock hidden under the stairs, she soon realizes it's
the first clue to complete her late father's quest to find and
destroy both halves of a mystical, ancient triangle, an artifact
whose owner can control time. Opposing her is a power-crazed
consortium, the Illuminati, and their death-defying race takes
them to Ankor Wat in Cambodia, battling massive Stone Monkey
Warriors in the ancient Tomb of the Dancing Light, and frozen
Siberia, where terror lurks deep in the icy Temple of Ten
Thousand Shadows.
As Lara, long, lanky Angelina Jolie is perfect, lending a wicked
playfulness and dangerous darkness to the cyberspace figure while
Jon Voight, Jolie's real-life dad who plays her father, embodies
Lord Croft. Iain Glen proves a worthy adversary, along with
Daniel Craig as Alex West, who has a past personal relationship
with Lara. Despite the somewhat murky script, director Simon West
creates an exciting action-adventure, a summer popcorn picture.
On the Granger Movie Gauge of 1 to 10, "Tomb Raider" is a
fast-paced 8. Like Wonder Woman, Lara Croft is an icon to girls
and a sexy, female fantasy to guys. But where can I get an orange
fluorescent stick like Lara's?

8. Answer to this weeks trivia is..
================================================
B) "I don't think I can cry on camera."
While at a bar with Spielberg, McQueen said, "I'm sorry but
I don't think I can cry on camera. I have to turn down the
picture." He's referring to the final scene where Dreyfuss
says his goodbyes with tears in his eyes and boards the ship.
Spielberg offered to remove the crying aspect of the scene,
but McQueen said, "No, the crying should stay...it makes the
scene." Spielberg accepted his answer and gave the role to
Dreyfuss.
