WHERE DO YOU SIT?
Recent research findings provided by psychologist Donna Dawson
and reported by Odeon, Britain's largest theater chain say that
"Front row film fanatics" were competitive, extroverted and
assertive. "Natural leaders, they like to watch a film in a group
and dislike sitting on their own," said Dawson, who named Mike
Myers' Austin Powers and Julia Roberts' Erin Brokovich as typical
front-rowers. In the seats a few rows behind them is where you'll
find middle-of-the-roaders, flexible, peaceable characters like
Gwyneth Paltrow's Emma or Nicolas Cage's Captain Corelli.
"Detached observers" sit on the side aisle in pursuit of
"psychological space," and room to spread their stuff out.
"They hate feeling crowded or harassed and choose an end seat
because they want to be near an exit should anything go wrong"
Dawson said. "Quieter and less self-confident, they tend to have
acquaintances, but only a few close friends." Typical
side-aislers include Jack Nicholson's character from As Good As
It Gets and Uma Thurman's from Pulp Fiction. And then there's the
back of the theater where "invisible rebels" take a seat like
Sigourney Weaver's Lieutenant Ripley or Clint Eastwood's
poncho-wearing Man With No Name. So, where do you sit?

MIRAMAX GETS 'ROOM' FOR CANNES WINNER
Variety reports that Miramax Films has acquired U.S. and all
English-speaking Canadian rights to "The Son's Room," Nanni
Moretti's Cannes Film Festival Palme d'Or winner. The film is
described as a delicate drama about the pain and grief of a
family coming to terms with the loss of a son.

HAL HOLBROOK JOINS JIM CARRY FLICK
Hal Holbrook (The Firm), who is mainly known for his roles on the
little screen ("Evening Shade," "Designing Women") has signed to
star opposite Jim Carrey in "The Majestic," in which he'll play
chairman of the House Un-American Activities Committee.

TED TURNER LAUNCHES FILM PROD. COMPANY
Media mogul Ted Turner has set up his own new production company
in Atlanta. Ted Turner Productions, located near the CNN
headquarters that once was the center of Turner's media empire,
will produce feature-length films and documentaries. Rueters
reports that the new venture will focus on productions related to
Turner's long-standing interest in the United Nations, the threat
of nuclear war and the Civil War.

DAWSON ON SET OF 'MIB2'
Rosario Dawson has begun work on Men in Black 2, playing Will
Smith's love interest, the Calgary Sun reported (via SCIFI.com).
We're going to shoot the beginning and end of the film first, in
case there is an actors' strike, so the effects people have
something to work with," Dawson told the newspaper. Dawson also
said that Men in Black co-star Linda Fiorentino "might be back"
and that Tommy Lee Jones "is definitely back. He wasn't at the
read-through, but someone read his lines."

MOORE SET TO STAR IN 'RAVELING'
A novel by Peter Moore Smith titled Raveling, has been optioned
by John Wells Productions (JWP) for actress Julianne Moore to
star in and executive produce. "Raveling" is a thriller that
revolves around a psychologist who uncovers the mystery
surrounding two brothers and the murder of their sister. Moore
will play the psychologist.

FILM STUDIO WORKERS POSE AS 'PATRIOT' FANS
A week after Columbia Pictures disciplined ad executives for
creating a fictional critic to tout their films, the studio
admitted that two employees posed as fans in a television
testimonial for one of its films. A source at Columbia, said two
employees of parent company, Sony Pictures Entertainment, posed
as fans for a nationally televised ad for "The Patriot" released
last summer. The employees were passed off as ordinary moviegoers
in a montage of purported man-on-the-street interviews with
people who said they enjoyed the film. In the commercial that
aired on NBC and CBS, one employee looks into the camera and
assures viewers "The Patriot" is a perfect date movie!" as her
ostensible date, played by the other worker, silently looks on
with a faint smile. The Columbia employees who appeared in the ad
were not paid and they had seen the film, said the source, who
defended the ad but said that due to the controversy the studio
would discontinue the use of testimonial promotions altogether.

'CRAZY AS HELL' CASTING
Tia Texada (Nurse Betty) is set to join Eriq La Salle, Michael
Beach, Ronny Cox and Steven Weber in La Salle's directorial debut
"Crazy as Hell." the film, an adaptation of the novel Satan,
tells the tale of a psychiatrist who agrees to the filming of a
30-day documentary about how psychiatry effects mental illness.
The character Texada will play is at the center of a love
triangle involving La Salle and Beach.

COUPLE SUE SONY OVER 'ANIMAL'
Two parents have sued Sony Pictures, claiming the studio falsely
marketed its comedy "The Animal" to youths, according to the
Associated Press. James and Ana Morris claim they took their twin
13-year-old sons and 10-year-old daughter to see the movie and
that Sony failed to warn moviegoers adequately of scenes
involving human and animal sexual acts that are inappropriate for
children to see. The couple seeks $15,000 to $75,000 in
compensatory and punitive damages. In addition, James Morris said
the movie should have been rated R instead of PG-13. The suit
also mentions how Sony deceived moviegoers with an ad containing
praise from a phony film critic.

SPIKE LEE EYEING 'RENT'
Variety reports that Spike Lee has expressed interest in
directing a film version of the popular Broadway musical "Rent."
Miramax Films has the project in development, though there is no
screenwriter or talent attached. Sources at the film company
confirmed Lee's interest, but no negotiations have begun.

'28 DAYS' FINDS HOME AT SEARCHLIGHT
Fox Searchlight has signed on for sci-fi thriller "28 Days Later"
with director Danny Boyle ("Trainspotting") attached. As reported
in previous editions, The film will tell a near-future story set
in post-apocalyptic London after mankind has been nearly wiped
out by a virus and will focus on a small group that has survived.

'BENJI' TO MAKE A COMEBACK
Ventura Distribution and Mulberry Square Productions announced
today that they would soon be releasing the new Benji Video
Library for a new generation of fans. "Benji at Marineland" and
"Benji at Work" will premiere on VHS and DVD on August 28, with
17 other Benji titles soon to follow.

SNEAK PEAK OF NEW 'SPIDER-MAN' POSTER

Columbia Pictures, recently told E! Online that people who are
signed up to receive the newsletter from the official Spider-Man
website, will get a sneak peek of the movie's new poster this
week. head on over to http://www.spider-man-movie.com and sign up
for
their newsletter if your interested. In related news,
Comics2Film.com reports that the first "Spider-Man" trailer
will be attached to "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within" when its
released July 11th.

OPRAH BUYING $50 MILLION ESTATE
Television talk show host and media entrepreneur Oprah Winfrey
has agreed to buy a mansion near Santa Barbara for $50 million in
one of the most expensive residential property deals in
California, the Los Angeles Times said on Sunday. The 42-acre
estate in Montecito includes a 23,000 square-foot Georgian-style
house, a swimming pool and tennis court, a barn, an orchard, two
ponds and a lake

DROWNING AT TOMMY LEE'S HOME
A four-year-old boy drowned to death on Sunday at a birthday
party given by rock musician Tommy Lee for one of his sons. The
child, who had apparently been swimming with several other
children, was found floating face down in the shallow end of the
pool. Two adults at the party tried to resuscitate the child
while waiting for an ambulance, but he was pronounced dead at a
local hospital, police said. The boy's father, James Veres, a
television producer, told a local radio station on Sunday that
more people should have been hired to supervise the children and
called his son's death "inexcusable."

PALTROW STALKER DENIED RELEASE
A pizza delivery man who last year was convicted of stalking
Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow and sentenced to a mental
hospital must remain there for the foreseeable future. Dante
Michael Soiu, 51, who sent hundreds of letters to Paltrow and
showed up at her parents home in Santa Monica four times, was
convicted after a trial last December of stalking the actress.
During a hearing on Thursday, in which Soiu's lawyer presented a
progress report on his client to Superior Court JudgeRobert
O'Neill, the judge ruled that Soiu should remain
institutionalized. O'Neill asked for another progress report on
Soiu in December.

SANDRA BULLOCK SUING BUILDER
On Friday, actress Sandra Bullock filed a lawsuit against the
builder of her Lake Austin house, claiming he breached terms of a
contract. The suit claims Bullock invested $331,225 in 1997 to
help Benny Daneshjou's company purchase nearly 19 acres of land
to build a subdivision. In the deal, Bullock was supposed to get
her money back, plus half the profits from the sale of the lots.
Bullock claims Daneshjou's final plans for the land were
substantially different from what Bullock had agreed to, and that
the actress and her father, who is also her business manager,
were
not told of the changes. She is seeking her money back, plus
profits and legal fees.

McGOWAN READY TO BE 'CHARMED'?
Yep! In the last issue of Movie Fever we reported a rumor that
Rose McGowan, best known for her roles in teen thrillers like
Scream and Jawbreaker, is in talks to join the hit WB drama
"Charmed," taking over the role departed by Shannen Doherty. The
rumour is now official, however McGowan will not take over
Doherty's role, but will enter "Charmed" as the trio's fourth,
long-lost sister and the Doherty character will evaporate from
the air waves.

DOLLY PARTON TO PLAY MAE WEST
Dolly Parton will portray Mae West in a CBS-TV movie later this
year. "We go into production this fall," Dolly told Reuters "and
hopefully the movie will be ready early next year."

McVEIGH BOOK SET FOR CBS MINI-SERIES
The CBS television network has purchased rights to a book on
Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh as the basis for a
mini-series. Daily Variety reported on Thursday that Lou Michel
and Dan Herbeck, authors of "American Terrorist: Timothy McVeigh
and the Oklahoma City Bombing," got 75 hours of taped interviews
with McVeigh and access to his family. Gerry Abrams, one of the
producers for the upcoming CBS mini-series told the trade that
McVeigh will not be the focus of the television production.
Instead, the mini-series will follow the approach taken in
"Traffic," the Oscar-winning film about the U.S.-Mexican drug
wars, in which "seemingly unrelated people are involved in a
common crisis."

KELLY RIPA HAS BABY GIRL
Kelly Ripa, Regis Philbin' sidekick on "Live with Regis and
Kelly" delivered a baby girl over the weekend. Lola Grace
Consuelos was born about 6:30 a.m. Saturday at an undisclosed New
York hospital. She tipped the scales at 8 pounds, 3 ounces. It's
the second child for Ripa, 30, and her soap stud husband, Mark
Consuelos. The couple have a 3-year-old son, Michael Joseph.

LENO IN THE DARK ON THURSDAY
E! Online reports that In a salute to energy conservation and the
California power crisis, Jay Leno will tape his June 21 episode
virtually in the dark without studio lights, TV monitors,
amplifiers or "other power sources." "There will be minimal
lighting, which the audience will help us out with," says an NBC
spokeswoman. NBC says the idea came up when the network--like
most other businesses in California--was asked to turn off lights
and computers whenever possible. NBC points out that the amount
of power used on one episode of The Tonight Show equals a month's
worth of power at a normal family home.

SANDRA BERNHARD GETS TALK SHOW
Comedian Sandra Bernhard ("Roseanne") will have her own talk
show, "The Sandra Bernhard Experience," on the A&E television
network this summer. A&E, which is looking for ways to reach a
younger audience, has committed to five shows as a pilot to run
later this summer. Bernhard hopes it does well enough to continue
into an ongoing show.
