SCRIPT FOR 'DESTINATION 2' READY
Final Destination producer Craig Perry talked recently with SCI
FI Wire about the status of the upcoming sequel. "The script is
in," Perry said. Perry stated that he would love to continue
working with [director] Jim [Wong] on the project, but Wong
previously told SCI FI Wire that he's not interested in helming
the sequel and is busy directing the SF thriller The One, which
stars Jet Li. In describing the film Perry added, "It pretty
solidly builds on the mythology of the first one, and it doesn't
shy away from the things that made the first one work, which are
the gritty, clever, entertaining and spectacularly over-the-top
death sequences. ... I think one of the things that made the
first movie interesting is that it didn't rely on
[computer-generated images]. "Most of the effects are mechanical
effects, in-camera effects, special effects that were done on set
practically. I think you can tell the difference, because it's a
lot more organic. So we are definitely going to try and continue
that ideal, because it feels like it's a real thing that you're
watching. People are so attuned to CG now that they're looking
for the seams--they're looking for the weight of the steps. I'd
like to use the technology to sell the idea, not to have the idea
be the technology."

'HANNIBAL' PREQUEL IN MOTION
Daily Variety reports that Universal Pictures is moving ahead
with plans to bring bloodthirsty Hannibal Lecter back to the big
screen in a prequel to the 1991 hit "Silence of the Lambs" and
recent follow-up "Hannibal." Director Brett Ratner ("Rush Hour,"
"The Family Man") is in talks with Universal to receive about $4
million to direct "Red Dragon." Anthony Hopkins is in
negotiations to reprise his Oscar-winning Lecter role for
"Dragon," depending on the script.

QUARLES LOOKING TO HELM 'LOVE'
Screenwriter Darryl Quarles ("Big Momma's House") is in
negotiations to make his directorial debut on the urban drama "So
This Is Love" from his own script, according to the Hollywood
Reporter. Described by the trade as a male version of "Waiting to
Exhale," "Love" is about four young, successful, married
middle-class black men who are best friends. By virtue of their
friendships, their wives are also best friends. When one of the
men leaves his wife for a young white woman, tension ripples
throughout the group.

'X-MEN' TOPS SATURN AWARDS
"X-Men" lead the competition Tuesday night at the 27th annual
Saturn Awards, which recognizes outstanding achievements in
science fiction, horror and fantasy entertainment. According to
the Hollywood Reporter, the film was named best science fiction
film and took home a total of six Saturn Awards. New Line
Cinema's "Final Destination" won best horror film, and its star
Devon Sawa was named best younger actor. The studio's "Frequency"
won best fantasy film. For a full list of winners visit..

100 BEST THRILLERS
Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho" is the American Film Institute's pick
for the most thrilling film of all time, as revealed on Tuesday's
CBS special "AFI's 100 Years ... 100 Thrills." Filling out the
top 10 were "Jaws," "The Exorcist," "North by Northwest," "The
Silence of the Lambs," "Alien," "The Birds," "The French
Connection," "Rosemary's Baby" and "Raiders of the Lost Ark." For

DIMENSION DEVELOPING 'JUNK'
Dimension Films will develop the family Sci Fi film "Junk," based
on a pitch by director Robert Kurtzman and writers David Benullo
and David Goldstein, according to The Hollywood Reporter (via
SciFi.com). Kurtzman (Wishmaster) is attached to direct for
producers Wes Craven and Marianne Maddalena. Junk tells the story
of a group of misfit kids who find an unexpected treasure in a
junkyard.

PROPAGANDA GETS 'BIG IN JAPAN'
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Propaganda Films has
acquired the rights for the comedy pitch "Big in Japan."
First-time writer Jason Taragon will write the pitch, which is
about a one-hit wonder hip-hop group that gets a second chance
when their music is rediscovered in Japan by a growing subculture
of Japanese kids obsessed with rap.

JET LI SET FOR UNTITLED FILM
Jet Li is set to take a comedic turn in the Big Apple after
signing a deal to play a Tibetan monk who wins a trip to New
York, Daily Variety reported on Tuesday. The trade said Li
dreamed up the idea for the Miramax film, in which the monk ends
up bringing harmony to an inner-city neighborhood. Before
shooting can start, Li will play an assassin in a
Chinese-language period epic "Hero," about a relationship between
Li and China's first emperor, played by Jiang Wen.

FILMING NEAR COMPLETE ON 'SPIDER-MAN'
Sam Raimi, director of the upcoming "Spider-Man" movie, told the
Popcorn U.K. Web site that "We're just finishing up the last of
the shoot. We've got about another three days of photography,
then there's a week somewhere two months from now, but we're
almost done." The director goes on to explain the process has
actually been quite "daunting", but says he hopes to "meet the
expectation" of his 'Spider-Man' fans. The film will now turn
it's attention to post-production.

'CYBER LOVE' BOOTS UP PRODUCTION
Electric Entertainment, Centropolis Entertainment and Landscape
Entertainment will produce a Ron Bass-penned thriller tentatively
titled "Cyber Love Story," according to the Hollywood Reporter.
The trade reports that Sony will have first crack at the project,
which is described as having elements of a 'Fatal Attraction' but
set in a cyber environment. The story involves online dating in
the near future, when chat rooms have become totally synthetic
environments.

( *** M I N O R S P O I L E R S ***)

Swordfish (Rated R)
Starring: John Travolta, Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Don Cheadle
Vinnie Jones.
Release Date: June 8, 2001

Review by Susan Granger
SSG Syndicate
http://www.susangranger.com

"You know, the problem with Hollywood is that they make s**t,"
says John Travolta as this enigmatic cyber-crime caper opens. He
rants on about how films, particularly "Dog Day Afternoon," lack
realism, failing to push the envelope. But you're jarred to
ruthless reality when you realize he's holding 22 hostages, wired
with explosives, in the midst of a heist at L.A.'s World Banc.
Then a flashback reveals what happened three days earlier when he
sent Halle Berry to recruit "the most dangerous hacker in
America," Hugh Jackman, an ex-con on probation for computer
piracy. The only bait he'll bite is enough cash to gain custody
of his young daughter whose alcoholic mother has now married a
porno-producer. But money's no problem since, in a perverse twist
on patriotism, Travolta's determined to pull off a massive
cyber-heist, stealing $9.5 billion in a DEA money-laundering
slush fund that's code-named Swordfish.

Despite a bizarre haircut, Travolta's menacing and manipulative
as "a driven, unflinching, calculating machine who takes what he
wants when he wants and disappears." In contrast, Jackman
("X-Men") embodies the reluctant hero, while Berry delivers
shifting signals about her motives, along with baring her
breasts, and Don Cheadle is a determined FBI cyber-crimes agent.
Despite writer Skip Wood's complex, high-tech cyber-babble about
decrypting data and hidden worms, director Dominic Sena ("Gone in
60 Seconds") basically loves to blow things up, going
over-the-top in terms of shoot-outs, car crashes and shattering
glass. But the final spectacular confrontation, involving a
Sikorski helicopter and a bus full of hostages, is truly
jaw-dropping.

On the Granger Movie Gauge of 1 to 10, "Swordfish" blasts in with
an intense, action-packed, fast-paced 7. It's a dynamite
thriller!
