MGM DROPS 'BASIC INSTINCT 2'
The Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc. film studio has dropped its plans
for a sequel to the hit thriller "Basic Instinct," and actress
Sharon Stone is suing producers, saying they reneged on a $14
million commitment to her, according to Daily Variety. The
lawsuit alleges that "Basic Instinct 2" producers Andy Vajna and
Mario Kassar had a verbal agreement with Stone guaranteeing her
at least $14 million for her commitment to the sequel, even if
the movie never got made, Variety said. In addition to the $14
million, Stone is seeking a share of gross profits if the film is
ever produced, regardless of its title or who plays her role.
McTIERNAN OUT OF 'SMOKE'
Variety reports that director John McTiernan will not helm the
period drama "Smoke and Mirrors, set to star Michael Douglas and
Catherine Zeta-Jones. McTiernan had been near a deal to come
aboard the Initial Entertainment Group/Miramax Films picture, but
due to what a source has called "insurmountable business
differences," he has chosen to step away from the project.
McTiernan is currently in post-production on MGM's "Rollerball."
HOFFMAN TO DIRECT AND STAR IN 'INJURIES'
According to the Hollywood Reporter via E! Online, Dustin Hoffman
will direct, star and produce the legal thriller Personal
Injuries for Disney. The film is based on the Scott Turow novel
by the same name. Hoffman will direct himself as successful
personal-injuries lawyer Robbie Feaver, who regularly bribes
judges to win cases. He gets caught by the FBI and, to avoid
jail, agrees to wear a wire for a top-secret sting operation.
Feaver, whose wife is slowly dying, is paired with a lonely but
sexy female agent who harbors secrets of her own.
SECRET SERVICE WANTS PROP MONEY
The AP is reporting that The Secret Service wants moviemakers to
return bogus money that looks so genuine some people are spending
it. Bills with phony face values totaling about $1 billion were
blown up during recent filming of the action movie "Rush Hour 2"
in Las Vegas. Some of the bills fluttered into the hands of
people who later went to businesses and spent them, authorities
said. "The product they were producing was just too close to
genuine," said Assistant Special Agent Chuck Ortman. "Notes were
successfully passed." 19 of the bills have been passed in the Las
Vegas and Los Angeles areas, and another attempt was reported in
Minneapolis.
KATE WINSLET; NO MOTHER TERESA
Indian media reported that Kate Winslet, star of the blockbuster
"Titanic," had been lined up to play the Roman Catholic nun in a
feature film to be directed by Rajiv Nath. Winslet's spokeswoman
debunked the report saying, that she knew nothing about the film
and had no idea where the reports had come from.
'TRIPLE X' COMING TOGETHER
Rob Cohen is set to direct and Neal Moritz is in final
negotiations to produce the urban spy thriller "Triple X" for
Revolution Studios, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Vin
Deisel is circling the project, which would mark a reteaming of
the director, producer and actor, who worked together on
Universal Pictures' upcoming "The Fast and the Furious." Moritz
and Cohen also worked together on Universal's "The Skulls."
"Triple X" is described as centering on a tough extreme-sports
player who is co-opted by the government to infiltrate a crime
ring. The character is described as a James Bond-like hero with
the personality of a rock star/chick magnet like Limp Bizkit
frontman Fred Durst.

UNIVERSAL NEGOTIATING FOR 'SUB-MARINER'
Universal Pictures is in negotiations to nab feature film rights
to the Marvel comic book property "The Sub-Mariner." The story
follows the adventures of Prince Namor, a half-man/half-amphibian
creature from Atlantis. A troubled rebel with a short temper, he
has helped the human race and fought against it when humankind
polluted his underwater kingdom with waste.
RUFFALO EYING 'SIGNS'
According to Variety, Mark Ruffalo, ("You Can Count on Me") is in
negotiations to co-star with Mel Gibson in M. Night Shyamalan's
upcoming thriller "Signs" for the Walt Disney Co. As reported
previously the story involves the mysterious sudden appearance of
crop circles at a family farm in Pennsylvania.
MIRIMAX GETS 'JOHNNY'
Miramax has acquired the rights for writer Daniel Bernstein's
pitch "Johnny on the Spot," based on the Edward Sorel children's
book of the same name. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the
pitch is about a young boy who discovers that his television
broadcasts future events, prompting him to assume a superhero
identity in order to stop crimes before they happen.
MOLLY PARKER JOINS CUSACK IN 'HOFFMAN'
Actress Molly Parker, who played a stripper in the sexually
charged Wayne Wang film "The Center of the World" will star
opposite John Cusack in "Hoffman," according to Variety. The film
follows local gallery owner Hoffman (Cusack), who is befriended
by a young Adolf Hitler (Taylor) as he returns from World War I.
WARNER BROS. LOOKING TO GET 'DAMNATION'
Warner Bros. is in negotiations to acquire "Damnation Game," a
feature film based on the Clive Barker novel of the same name.
The project will tell the story of an imprisoned gambler and
thief who is released from prison early thanks to a wealthy
industrialist who enlists him to be his bodyguard. The inmate's
new job proves difficult when he realizes that someone is trying
to collect his employer's soul as a way of settling an old debt.
In related news, DarkHorizons.com reports that Sean Connery and
Paul Newman are set to star in the film.

fake film critic? Well according to Daily Variety, Sony Pictures

creative advertising, and Matthew Cramer, director of creative
advertising, were rebuked and suspended without pay for 30 days.

=======================================================
Me, Myself & Irene (2000) (R)
Jim Carrey returns to his comic roots after a brief hiatus into
drama with this schizophrenic laugh-fest. He portrays Charlie, a
state trooper in Rhode Island who is unable to take medication
for his Multiple Personality Disorder. This unleashes Hank, an
alter ego that is threateningly aggressive and sexual. When
Charlie begins to fall in love with Irene (Renée Zellweger), he
must battle Hank for her affections. The resulting struggle
between the two personalities gives Carrey twice the opportunity
to trigger an onslaught of laughs, something he accomplishes with
the ease of an accomplished veteran.
CAST:
Jim Carrey, Renée Zellweger, Chris Cooper, Robert Forster,
Anthony Anderson, Danny Green, Jessica Harper, Lin Shaye, Richard
Jenkins.
