FAKE CRITIC REVEALED
Sony Pictures has admitted using fake quotes to promote its
films. Lines like "Another winner!" and "This year's hottest
new star!" were used on posters for films like The Animal and
A Knight's Tale, both of which have been recently released in
the United States. But the critic who supposedly wrote them -
David Manning of the Ridgefield Press - has been revealed as a
figment of a Sony marketing executive's imagination. The
Ridgefield Press is a real weekly newspaper covering a small town
in Connecticut. But it does not have a reviewer called David
Manning, and it was not aware that its name was being used on
film adverts. An unidentified Sony employee apparently concocted
the Manning persona last July, using the name of a friend.

'STATE SECRET' REMAKE
Variety reports that Producer Mace Neufeld has optioned the
remake rights to "State Secret," a 1950 political thriller that
starred Douglas Fairbanks Jr., and will redo the film at Columbia
Pictures. The original film, an adaptation of the Roy Huggins
novel "Appointment With Fear," starred Fairbanks as a brilliant
American surgeon who travels to an Eastern European country for a
medical function and finds the country's leader has been murdered
and replaced by a lookalike.
NAPSTER THE MOVIE?
Reuters reports that Napster the movie may be coming to a screen
near you. "I can confirm we're in development on a project called
"Napster," said Marc McCarthy, a spokesman for Starz Encore, a
provider of movie programming for cable television operators that
is a unit of Liberty Media Group. McCarthy said there was no
commitment for production of the movie on Napster the
phenomenally popular song-swap service that turned the $40
billion recording industry upside down.

Jackman.

LUCAS WOULD LIKE TO SEE 'PHANTOM EDIT'
George Lucas told the Zap2it Web site that he hasn't seen the
rumored Phantom Edit of his Star Wars: Episode I movie--but wants
to. The edit, by a critical fan, supposedly cuts out about 20
minutes of the movie, removing redundant scenes and dialogue and
diminishing Jar Jar Binks' role, the site reported. The tape has
been floating around Hollywood for a while. Lucas said he wasn't
worried about the edit. "The Internet is a new medium; it's all
about doing things like that," Lucas told the site. "I haven't
seen it. I would like to." At least one fan has created a Web
site dedicated to the edit, Zap2it reported.

De LINE TO DIRECT 'SCOTTSBORRO'
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Paramount Pictures-based
producer Donald De Line is teaming with writer Lem Dobbs ("The
Limey") on the feature film "Scottsboro." The film, set in the
1930s in Alabama, is the true story of nine black youngsters
falsely accused of raping two white women. The feature will be an
epic drama with the same mosaic structure as "Traffic," featuring
different story lines and characters surrounding the event,
including the police, the courts, racist Southerners, the boys'
mothers and the Jewish lawyer who defended all nine of the
accused youths.
'BASIC' BACK IN THE WORKS
Director Lee Tamahori ("Along Came A Spider") has renewed talks
to shoot a military thriller with the working title "Basic,"
according to Variety. The film centers around a DEA agent brought
in to investigate the disappearance of a legendary Army ranger
drill instructor and several cadets in a training exercise that
might have resulted in multiple murders.
BRUCE CAMPBELL TALKS 'SPIDER-MAN'
Recently actor Bruce Campbell sat down with the folks at Empire
Online to talk about what's up on the Spidey set. "I have the
second most important role in the film," Campbell told Empire
Online. "I play the ring announcer who introduces Spider-Man and
'The Amazing Spider-Man'. If I don't pick up an Oscar for best
supporting actor for this role, then there's something seriously
wrong.." Read the entire article at..

MICHAEL J. FOX MAY GUEST ON 'SPIN CITY'
Rueters reports that Michael J. Fox is strongly suggesting he
will return for a guest spot on the show this fall. The stage for

said on that one}

Duchovny told reporters Sunday, during interviews for his new
sci-fi comedy, Evolution. "I don't think it's fair to me or the
fans" to do more cameos. "It's hard to walk away," he added. "I
not only miss Mulder, but I miss the show. I miss having my own
show. It's fun having your own show."
RICK SCHRODER LEAVING 'NYPD BLUE'
