Hi Movie Fans!

In the last issue I asked those of you who saw Pearl Harbor to
let us know what you thought. Jade W. wrote in and here were her
thoughts..

There are always a few movies each year that the critics rip
apart and I end up thoroughly enjoying. Pearl Harbor is one
of them. I saw the very first showing on Friday morning, and
was completely mesmerized. Like Titanic, Pearl Harbor is a
big movie, filled with romance, attractive and talented actors
and intriguing real life events. The Japanese were well
portrayed as an intelligent and cunning foe. The special effects
were splendid and the historical elements left me terribly
saddened. *** stars out ****

Thanks for sharing that with us Jade!

We also have a review by Susan, as always check it out in the
review section.

5. MOVIE REVIEW(s)
================================================

Pearl Harbor (Rated PG-13)
Starring: Ben Affleck, Josh Hartnett, Kate Beckinsale, Cuba
Gooding, Jr., Alec Baldwin.
Release Date: May 25, 2001

Review by Susan Granger
SSG Syndicate
http://www.susangranger.com

It's a glossy, three-hour, epic love story about the loss of
innocence, set around the tragedy of "the day which will live in
infamy," according to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (Jon
Voight). And at $140+ million, it's also the most expensive movie
ever made. So, is it a patriotic blockbuster? Yes. Is it an
Oscar-contender, like "Titanic," its obvious inspiration? No.

Written by Randall Wallace ("Braveheart"), directed by Michael
Bay ("Armageddon") and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, "Pearl
Harbor" delivers primarily in the violent, realistic action
sequences: the Japanese sneak attack on the U.S. fleet on the
fateful morning of December 7, 1941. Planes swoop in. Bombs
explode. Battleships sink. Machine guns fire. The
two-pilots-and-a-Navy nurse love story fares less well. Ben
Affleck and Josh Hartnett are boyhood pals who fall in love with
the same woman, Kate Beckinsale. Affleck meets her at an Army
induction center, where she inoculates his bare rump - twice.
Romance ignites and blazes until his plane is shot down in the
Battle of Britain. In Hawaii, Hartnett, delivers the news to
Beckinsale and soon they find passion under the parachutes in an
airfield hangar. But Affleck's not dead, and Beckinsale's
pregnant. If it sounds trite, sappy and prosaic, it is. Without
high drama or sentimentality, there's an emotional detachment,
and it takes Col. James Doolittle's (Alec Baldwin) Tokyo raid,
four months later, to resolve their destiny. But Cuba Gooding Jr
is charismatic as cook who shot down Japanese Zeros and was the
first African-American awarded the Navy Cross; too bad his part
is so truncated.

On the Granger Movie Gauge of 1 to 10, "Pearl Harbor" is a
stunning, explosive 6. It's a contrived, commercial war movie. If
you want accurate history, rent "Tora, Tora, Tora."

6. CELEBRITY PROFILE
==========
BEN AFFLECK
================================================

Birth name: Benjamin Geza Affleck

Born in Berkley California August 15, 1972 to a school teacher
mother who separated from his father shortly after his birth.
Affleck grew-up in Cambridge Massachusetts. A few months later
following his eighth birthday he landed his first acting role as
regular on the PBS series TheVoyage of the MiMi. It was that same
year bosom buddy Matt Damon's family moved just two blocks away.
Damon and Affleck attended classes together at the Cambridge
Latin school the two were deeply involved in the drama program.
Whenever there was a casting call in Boston the two amigos would
be there.

Damon went on to study at Harvard University; Affleck was more
serious about pursuing an acting career. He tried to be more like
his buddy Damon, by attending both the University of Vermont and
California occidental college but his calling was in acting the
temptation of the big screen was unable to be turned-off. Affleck
co-stared in a couple of mini-series such as hands of a stranger,
and Danielle Steele's adaptation Daddy. He also co-starred in A
small role in the drama School Ties alongside Damon, Chris O'
donell and Brendan Fraser. Affleck's career took off when he made
an unforgettable appearance in Dazed and Confuse. He started
working on the production of Dogma following the wrap up of the
summer of 1998' flick Armageddon. Affleck co-starred with
girl-next door Sandra Bullock in the romantic comedy forces of
nature. And heated the screen with Charlize Theron in the John
Frankenheimer film reindeer games.

His high school sweetheart Cheyenne Rothman did not stand a
chance once he crossed the path of Hollywood's "it-girl" Gwyneth
Paltrow. In 1997 the two attended the golden ceremony together as
a couple. That following year the lovers co-starred in
Shakespeare in love for which Paltrow snagged a golden globe and
an Oscar. And with that came the end of their relationship. Ben
has since starred in an average of three movies a year and can be
seen in the movie Pearl Harbor currently in theaters.
