3. IN THE NEWS - Movies & Entertainment
=======================================================
'GLADIATOR 2' IN THE WORKS?
Uh huh. According to E! Online's Anderson Jones, DreamWorks and
Universal are planning a prequel to Gladiator that could chart
Maximus' career from soldier to feared general.
DUVALL BEGINS SHOOTING 'TANGO'
Shooting has begun on the Latin American thriller "Assassination
Tango," which Robert Duvall serves as star, writer, director and
producer. In the film Duvall plays a New York hitman whose last
assignment takes him to Buenos Aires. Ruben Blades plays an
Argentinean whom he befriends in the local tango cafes; what
seems like an easy hit turns much more mysterious and dangerous.
Frank Gio, Kathy Baker and Luciana Pedraza also star.
LIMP BIZKIT SINGER TO HELM FILM
Fred Durst, lead singer for Limp Bizkit will helm his first
feature film, "Life Without Joe," according to Variety. The movie
is about a group of high school football players who must run for
their lives through the woods after stopping in a small town and
meeting some unusual characters. Production on the thriller, is
set to begin September.
FOX, SILVSTEDT TAKE 'BOAT TRIP'
Vivica A. Fox ("Kingdom Come") and former Playboy playmate of the
year Victoria Silvstedt will join Cuba Gooding Jr. and Horatio
Sanz in the indie feature "Boat Trip" for first-time director
Mort Nathan, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "Boat" centers
on two straight men (Gooding and Sanz) who embark on a Caribbean
cruise in search of love and romance only to realize that they
are on a gay cruise. Fox plays the fiancee to Gooding's
character. Silvstedt plays Inga, the head of the Swedish swim
team. Roger Moore and Rosalyn Sanchez also star in the film.
BREST WILL HELM AFFLECK STARRER
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Martin Brest ("Meet Joe
Black") will direct "Gigli" from his script and has tapped Ben
Affleck to star in the project. "Gigli" marks the first time
Brest will direct from his own script in more than 20 years. The
helmer last wrote and directed the 1979 feature "Going in Style"
starring George Burns, Art Carney and Lee Strasberg. "Gigli" will
tell the story of a lowly hit man (Affleck) who kidnaps out of a
home for the mentally challenged a powerful district attorney's
simpleton younger brother. Holing themselves up in a one-bedroom
apartment, the hit man hooks up with a free-spirited female
partner he assumes is a hit woman.
GIBSON EYEING 'SIGNS'
Word has that Mel Gibson is interested in the lead role for M.
Night Shyamalan's next project, "Signs." The film tells the story
of strange crop circles appearing in the fields owned by a family
living in rural Pennsylvania.
WELLS OUT OF 'TIME' TEMPORARILY
Only 18 days before wrapping principal photography for his
live-action feature directorial debut on "The Time Machine,"
director Simon Wells has abruptly dropped out of the project.
Gore Verbinski ("The Mexican," "Mouse Hunt") has stepped in to
complete the movie on schedule. DreamWorks announced the move
Thursday afternoon, saying that Wells had to step down after
being diagnosed as "suffering from extreme exhaustion" and
ordered by doctors to rest for a minimum of two weeks. Wells
plans to return to oversee all postproduction duties.
DIRECTOR DONOVAN GETS CHAN'S 'TUXEDO'
Director Kevin Donovan is in final negotiations to make his
feature directorial debut in DreamWorks' "The Tuxedo," in which
Jackie Chan is attached to star. The action comedy will see Chan
playing a bumbling spy that invents a tuxedo that helps him
fight. The project is aiming for a fall start.
'IRON MAN' GETS DIRECTOR
Dark Horizons reports that Alan Rudolph will direct "Iron Man," a
coming-of-age drama about an undefeated high school wrestler,
played by Brad Renfro, who crisscrosses the country competing
under the watchful gaze of his alcoholic dad.
GOYER TAKES ON 'MURDER'
Filmmaker David Goyer will write and direct Dimension Films'
supernatural thriller "Murder Mysteries," according to The
Hollywood Reporter. Based on a short story by author and comic
book scribe Neil Gaiman, "Murder" is described as being in the
vein of "Wings of Desire." The story is a film noir set in heaven
during the last days of Earth's creation. It follows the angel of
vengeance as he sets out to solve the first murder ever
committed, which occurs among the angels in heaven.
COMBS IN NEGOTIATIONS FOR 'MONSTER BALL'
Hip-hop entrepreneur Sean Combs (aka "Puff Daddy" aka "P. Diddy")
is in negotiations to join Billy Bob Thornton, Heath Ledger and
Halle Berry in Lions Gate Films' "Monster's Ball." The film
described by The Hollywood Reporter, centers on Hank (Thornton),
who lives with his aging racist father, Buck, and his
twenty-something son, Sonny (Ledger). Hank and Sonny work for the
local prison, where they are preparing the electric chair for a
black inmate (Combs). Hank winds up falling in love with the
inmate's widow, Leticia (Berry), who is unaware that Hank knew
her husband. A diner waitress, Leticia loses not only a husband
but also her son, house and car. Moving in with Hank, she hopes
for a better life only to discover Hank's connection to her
husband.
