3. IN THE NEWS - Movies & Entertainment
=======================================================
JANSSEN EYES 'MIB2'
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Famke Janssen ("X-Men") is
in negotiations to star as the lead villainess in "Men in Black
2" for director Barry Sonnenfeld. "MiB 2" will see the original
film's stars, Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, reprise their roles
as Agent J and Agent K, respectively. Although the plot is being
kept under wraps, it is known that Janssen will play the
villainess bombshell, Serleena. Johnny Knoxville ("Jackass") also
will be featured as a two-headed alien, while Rosario Dawson
("Josie and the Pussycats") plays Rita, a love interest to
Smith's character.
LIL' BOW WOW BIG SCREEN DEBUT
Fourteen-year-old rap star Lil' Bow Wow is poised to make his big
screen debut in "Like Mike," about a kid who finds a pair of
sneakers with magical powers worn by basketball superstar Michael
Jordan.
MIRAMAX LOOKING TO CLOSE DEAL ON 'CLOSET'
Miramax Films is in final negotiations with French major Gaumont
to acquire U.S. and English-speaking Canadian rights to the
comedy feature "Le Placard" (The Closet), which stars Daniel
Auteuil and Gerard Depardieu, according to The Hollywood
Reporter. The story follows a boring accountant (Auteuil) who
starts a rumor at his large company that he is homosexual, hoping
his boss will not fire him for fear of accusations of
discrimination. Depardieu plays a macho homophobic man forced to
befriend the accountant in order to keep his job.
'BLACK SHEEP' CASTING
Brooke Smith ("Series 7," "Silence of the Lambs") and Kerry
Washington ("Save the Last Dance") have signed on to join Chris
Rock and Anthony Hopkins in "Black Sheep," according to Variety.
There's no word on what roles each will play in the coming film.
MOELLER JOINS 'SCORPION KING'
Variety reports that Ralf Moeller (Gladiator, TV's Conan the
Barbarian) has joined the cast of Universal's "The Mummy Returns"
prequel project, "The Scorpion King."
BANDERAS TALKS 'PHANTOM'
Antonio Banderas has been speaking of Andrew Lloyd Webber's
"Phantom of the Opera" movie project and what he has to say
doesn't fit the mold of the original. While talking to the UK's
Daily Express Banderas spoke of the project, saying, "With this
film we are not trying to draw in people who really love the
theatre and go to the movie to see what they saw on stage. We are
creating a completely different concept, looking at it from a
completely different point of view. It will be a new creation
with even new music. A lot of the music you have heard in the
theatre version is being cut out."
RACHEL WEISZ EYES 'BOY'
'The Mummy Returns' star Rachel Weisz is in final negotiations to
join Hugh Grant and Tina Collette in "About a Boy," which is a
British adaptation of Nick Hornby's novel. The film follows a
womanizer (Grant) whose fear of commitment leads him to start up
relationships with single mothers, on the basis that they're
easier to leave. Toni Collette is also on board to play one of
Grant's single mother targets, whose 12-year-old son becomes best
friends with the 36-year-old slacker. Weisz would play another
love interest who Grant falls in love with at the same time.
BRANDO FALLS ILL
On Wednesday we reported that Marlon Brando agreed to make a
cameo appearance in "Scary Movie 2," which we now know was for a
reported $2 million. The following day Daily Variety columnist
Michael Fleming reported that the 77-year-old actor has developed
a case of pneumonia that threatened to delay shooting of the
opening scene of the film, in which Brando is to play a priest
performing an exorcism. At this time there is no word on how this
will affect production of the film. {We wish Mr. Brando a speedy
recovery.}
SW STARFIGHTER ON DISPLAY
The AP reports that The 34-foot, yellow-and-chrome Naboo
starfighter model used in the making of the 1999 film "Star Wars:
Episode I - The Phantom Menace" will be on display from April 28
through June 24 at the Arts and Industries Building of the
Smithsonian Institution.
The exhibit includes an interactive kiosk that details the
creative process of filmmaking and the evolution of the
starfighter in the "Star Wars" saga.
TIERNEY, DONOVAN JOIN 'INSOMNIA'
Maura Tierney (ER) and Martin Donovan are the latest additions to
join Al Pacino, Hilary Swank, and Robin Williams in Warner Bros.'
remake of the 1997 Norwegian psychological thriller "Insomnia,"
according to Variety. Tierney will play the part of Al Pacino's
love interest and Donovan will take on the part of Pacino's
police partner in the film, which tells the story of a cop
(Pacino) on the hunt for a killer but he himself ends up killing
his partner by mistake. In an attempt to cover it up, the killer
(played by Robin Williams) learns the truth and blackmails the
cop into framing an innocent man.
PAQUIN IN 'DARKNESS'
Variety reports that Anna Paquin (X-Men) has jumped on board "The
Darkness" horror film project. Paquin will play the part of a
young girl who is part of a family that moves into a remote house
that has a horrible dark past which gradually threatens to tear
the group apart.

Minnie Driver, The London-born star of last year's "Return to Me"
is engaged to marry actor Josh Brolin. "I can confirm that they
are engaged," publicist Ame Van Iden, said. But Van Iden said she
did not know whether Driver and her fiance had set a wedding
date. According to People magazine, Driver and Brolin began their
romance in 1998 on the set of the film "Slow Burn," which
premiered on video last fall.
'PUFF DADDY' SCOOTERS HIS WAY INTO MORE TROUBLE
Hip-hop mogul Sean Combs, who was just cleared last month of gun
possession and bribery charges, is once again in trouble with the
law. Apparently Combs was pulled over for allegedly making an
illegal lane change while driving a scooter along Miami Beach's
glitzy Ocean Drive on Saturday night and later found to have a
suspended New York driver's license. He was not arrested, but
signed a "promise to appear" form for a court date. Combs says
that he was unaware the license had been suspended.

first time in eight years, marking the Material Girl's first tour
since becoming a mom. "The Drowned World Tour" will be 19-city
tour through Europe and the United States kicking off on June 5
in Cologne.

IN THE NEWS - Television
====================================
ROB LOWE 'FRAMED'
Rob Lowe is set to take a break from the popular drama "The West
Wing" to star in "Framed," a psychological thriller for cable's
TNT. According to Reuters, Lowe will play Mike Santini, a New
York City detective who discovers the key witness in a
money-laundering case while on vacation in the Caribbean. The
show is based on a British miniseries that aired on A&E in the
early '90s and starred Timothy Dalton and Penelope Cruz.
ROSIE NOT ABLE TO HOST NICK AWARDS
Rosie O'Donnell will hand off hosting duties at Nickelodeon's
14th Annual Kids' Choice Awards to someone else. The talk-show
host's hand injury will keep her from appearing at the awards
show Saturday night. O'Donnell, who has been the host of the
event the past four years straight, was treated earlier this
month for a staph infection after three surgeries to repair a
severed tendon. Albie Hecht, executive producer of the Kids'
Choice Awards and president of film and TV production for
Nickelodeon, TV Land and TNN said "Rosie is irreplaceable" but
there will be a "special surprise guest" along with other
celebrities including Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy and Mike Myers
to run the show.
MAY 12 FINALE FOR 'WALKER'
Fans of "Walker, Texas Ranger" know there are just a few
first-run episodes to go before he rides off into the sunset, but
that doesn't mean they have to like it {just ask my mom.} Chuck
Norris told the Los Angeles Times that he wanted to leave while
the "show is still popular. You hate to be like a boxer who is
fighting and they remember him as a loser rather than a winner."
The show has been on CBS for eight seasons, and a special series
finale will air May 12. The two-hour special will feature
parallel story lines for the modern-day Walker and his 19th
century counterpart, Hayes Cooper. {Don't worry mom, it will be
OK!}
'CANNONBALL RUN' REALITY TV SERIES
A new reality TV series is coming to the USA Network in August.
"The Real Cannonball Run 2001," a reality series commemorating
the 30th anniversary of the cross-country race that inspired the
1981 Burt Reynolds movie "The Cannonball Run." The show will be a
one-hour series, scheduled to run over five consecutive nights
and will follow six teams of contestants as they traverse the
country in souped-up vehicles in a race to California from New
York to collect a $100,000 prize.
