Hi Movie Fans!
I have some GOOD news and some BAD news.
The bad news first. There was no winner of our "Refer Us and Win"
contest. Although, we are slightly disappointed we kind of
expected the outcome soon after launching the contest and it was
a learning experience to boot. We've had a number of subscribers
since announcing the contest, but we never recieved any emails as
to who they were refered by.
The good news. There was no winner of our "Refer Us and Win"
contest, so we get to keep the money. Seriously, I am determined
to give away the prize. I'm just not sure now how I want to do
it. I may just give it away to one of you as my way of saying
thank you for subscribing. Stay tuned.
Also stay tuned for our special edition newsletter due out later
tonight, or perhaps tomorrow -- giving you a wrap-up on tonight's
Oscar winners!
- Bob

'ZORRO 2' CLOSER TO HAPPENING
Variety reports that Martin Campbell has signed a first-look
directing deal with Sony to bring the Zorro sequel to a theater
near you. Campbell will first take on "The Notebook," which
scheduled to ramp up after the potential strikes have been
resolved. The "Zorro" sequel is currently being written by Ted
Elliott and Terry Rossio, who wrote the original film and
Campbell is looking to bring back Antonio Banderas, Catherine
Zeta-Jones and Anthony Hopkins to reprise their roles from the
first film.
'BATTLEFIELD' WINS 'RAZZIES' WORST OF THE YEAR
The science fiction epic "Battlefield Earth" swept almost all the
awards on Saturday -- for worst movie of the year.
"Battlefield," starring John Travolta as a Rasta-haired alien,
won seven Golden Raspberry or "Razzies" awards, tying the
non-profit film humor group's record for most worst awards, set
by "Showgirls" in 1996. It also named Travolta and "anyone who
appeared with him" the worst screen couple of the year." In a
statement, the producer of the movie, Elie Samaha, said he was
delighted: "I welcome the free publicity. The more the critics
hit 'Battlefield Earth,' the more DVDS it sells."
STREEP JOINS 'MINORITY'
Variety reports that Meryl Streep has signed on to a small role
in Steven Spielberg's "Minority Report" along side Tom Cruise and
Colin Farrell.
ZWICK EYEING 'KHE SANH'
Edward Zwick, who recently produced "Traffic," is negotiations to
direct Fox 2000's drama "Khe Sanh," which is being produced by
Tom Hanks. "Khe Sanh" is the working title of the film and
according to the Hollywood Reporter, the film is told through the
eyes of then 30-year-old Ray Stubbe, who served as a Navy
Chaplain for the 1st Battalion, 26th Marine Regiment at Khe Sanh
from July 1967 through most of the 2 1/2-month siege that ended
in spring 1968.
'PEARL HARBOR' FILM AT PEARL HARBOR
Variety reports that the real Pearl Harbor will host the premiere
of Disney's "Pearl Harbor" when the film debuts May 21 on the
deck of the USS John C. Stennis, a nuclear aircraft carrier. More
than 2,000 guests, including the film's stars and survivors of
the attack on Dec. 7, 1941, are expected to attend.
'REIGN' PACKING BAGS FOR AFRICA?
Due to the outbreak of Foot and Mouth disease Disney's "Reign of
Fire" project which stars Matthew McConaughey and Christian Bale
may be forced to shoot the film outside of Ireland according to
the ShowBiz Ireland website. Outdoor scenes which were to be
filmed in the countryside may instead move to North Africa.
"Reign" will tell the story of a brood of fire-breathing dragons
that have emerged, seeking to return to dominance over man after
a centuries-long rest.
ELLIOTT TO HELM 'MARGARIDA'
He directed the 1994 drag-queen comedy "The Adventures of
Priscilla, Queen of the Desert," and now Stephan Elliott is set
to write and direct "Singing Margarida," an edgy, drag-queen
comedy musical feature with Joe Simon producing. According the
Hollywood Reporter, 'Margarida' pokes fun at three people united
by a shared fear of their fathers. The story follows a business
student who is forced to return to his home in Rio de Janeiro for
a family wedding. He brings with him his wife, whom he married to
get his green card. Not far behind them on their journey is the
student's boyfriend, a singer who arrives in Rio as a woman.
HEWITT DONE WITH TEEN SLASHER FLICKS
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly Jennifer Love Hewitt
was asked if the teen movie horror wave was over her. Her reply
"Yeah. And I hope my fans agree. I'm kind of at a weird age in
the entertainment industry. It's like when you're 13, that's
another weird age because they'll hire the 18 year olds to play
your parts since they can work longer hours. You're stuck in the
middle. I want to do" "My Best Friend's Wedding" kind of movies,
and you can't if people still consider you the "teen scream
queen" type. That's why my roles as Audrey Hepburn [in the TV
biopic] and in "Heartbreakers" and "The Devil and Daniel Webster"
are characters that allowed me to be a little older."
ALEXANDER JOINS 'HAL'
Jason Alexander is the latest to join Gwyneth Paltrow and Jack
Black in 20th Century Fox's comedy "Shallow Hal" directed by the
Farrelly brothers. Alexander will play the best friend of Black's
character in a story that according to the Hollywood Reporter
revolves around a 12-year-old boy whose dying father's last words
of advice are for his son to spend his life with only young,
beautiful women. But when the story cuts to 28 years later, the
now-40-year-old Hal (Black), who sees women only as sex objects,
meets a heavy, unattractive woman but sees only her inner beauty.
BATES TACKLES PAIR OF FILMS
Kathy Bates has signed on to star opposite Jack Nicholson in New
Line Cinema's "About Schmidt." In the film Bates will play a
free-spirited mother whose son (Dermot Mulroney) is about to
marry a woman (Hope Davis) in a union to which the bride's father
(Nicholson) objects. Following her role in "Schmidt," Bates will
tackle an indie feature called "Carolina" with Julia Stiles. In
the film Bates will portray the eccentric grandmother of a young
girl (Stiles) who leaves her Southern home and bizarre family
behind for the West Coast, where she tries to find happiness. She
eventually realizes what a wonderful background she came from.
RICKY MARTIN, JENNIFER LOPEZ EYED FOR 'VEGAS'
Warner Bros. is developing a remake of the 1964 Elvis Presley -
Ann Margret classic, "Viva Las Vegas," and according to
Entertainment Weekly the studio has Ricky Martin in mind to star.
The films producer Lisa Tornell says the screenwriter, Jason
Schafer ("trick") is "starting from scratch, [focusing on] a
Puerto Rican singer who comes to Las Vegas to make it big,"
adding that, ideally, she'd love J. Lo to get down with the
project, too.
McG TALKS POSSIBLE 'ANGELS' SEQUEL
While talking to E! Online's Anderson Jones, McG the director of
the "Charlie's Angels" film spoke of a possible sequel. When
asked if behind the scenes footage found on the "Angels" DVD of
Drew Barrymore, Lucy Lui, and Cameron Diaz was entertaining
enough for a sequel McG replied, "There's talk of it. It has a
lot to do with how the girls feel. My head is kind of wrapped
around the three girls returning--at least for one more, don't
you think?" Jones also states in the article that "Angels" writer
John August is already penning a draft, and McG has had
preliminary meetings with Sony head Amy Pascal to discuss the
project.
MIRAMAX GETS 'APOCALYPSE REDUX'
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Miramax Films has acquired
North American theatrical distribution rights from American
Zoetrope to "Apocalypse Now Redux," director Francis Ford
Coppola's cut of "Apocalypse Now," with plans to release it in
the summer after its debut in May at the Cannes International
Film Festival. "Redux" includes 53 minutes of never-before-seen
footage of Coppola's 1979 Vietnam War epic, bringing the total
running time to 3 hours, 17 minutes.

WWF BUYS WCW
World Wrestling Federation Entertainment Inc. on Friday said it
bought rival World Championship Wrestling from Turner
Broadcasting Systems. Financial terms for the money-losing WCW
were not disclosed.
UPN INTERESTED IN 'BUFFY'
Word has it that UPN has put in a bid for a chance to land the
in-limbo WB series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" joining a list of
potential suitors that's said to include NBC, Fox and Buffy's
current home, the WB. Variety contends that the WB is still in
the running to keep "Buffy," and now may have budged past its
once-final $1.6 million offer to keep the show. The Hollywood
Reporter says ABC has dropped out of the running, while UPN and
NBC are still interested. Variety, meanwhile, indicates that Fox
(up to this point seen as the most likely candidate) also remains
a distinct possibility, and UPN nabbing Buffy doesn't appear very
likely.
BET's SMILEY DISMISSED
Black Entertainment Television has decided not to renew talk show
host Tavis Smiley's contract after it expires in September. BET
spokesman Michael Lewellen said Thursday that "BET Tonight," is
seen in an average of 215,000 households, and has suffered from
sagging ratings. He also added, BET is aiming for the
advertiser-friendly 18-to-34-year-old audience, and Smiley's
viewers tended to be much older.
ANIMATED TV SERIES FOR 'PUSSYCATS'
In light of the "Josie and the Pussycats" feature film release on
April 11th, a deal has been struck between Los Angeles-based
animation house DIC Entertainment under a deal with Riverdale
Prods. -- the film and television arm of Archie Comic
Publications -- and MultiModal Media Group to bring back "Josie
and the Pussycats" as an animated TV series according to the
Hollywood Reporter.
