Doug, "She is literally part of the Scooby Gang in what I'm sure
will be a hit motion picture, so we're screwed with that!"

Shadow of the Vampire (Rated R)
Starring: : John Malkovich, Willem Dafoe, Cary Elwes
Release Date: January 19, 2001 (wide)
Review by Susan Granger
SSG Syndicate
http://www.susangranger.com
Without doubt, the most awesome, bizarre, and innovative movie of
the millennium year is Elias Merhige's fanciful, if perverse,
rumination on the making of F.W. Murneau's silent film
"Nosferatu" in 1922. John Malkovich plays the visionary German
film director who cast an obscure actor, Max Schreck, as the
legendary vampire. The clever conceit of Steven Katz's brilliant
screenplay is that Schreck wasn't acting; he was, indeed, a
blood-sucker. Murneau explains his unusual behavior by saying
Schreck was trained by Stanislavsky and uses his "method," which
dictates that he appear at all times in full make-up and costume
and work only at night. The Faustian bargain Murneau strikes with
Schreck is that, after the final shot, the vampire can attack the
beautiful neck of his drug-addicted leading lady, Catherine
McCormack. Inevitably, this concept leads to many allusions about
the price one is willing to pay for one's art, along with
humorous comparisons between a film-maker and the undead. "You
and I are not so different," the vampire observes.
While John Malkovich captures the expressionist director's
obsessive intensity, it's Willem Dafoe's picture, particularly
when he plucks a bat out of the air and devours it or impatiently
clicks his grotesquely long, yellow nails together as he grows
thirsty, yearning, at one point, for the writer. "I am loath to
admit it myself," Murneau demurs, "but the writer is necessary."
Filmed on location in Luxembourg, Elias Merhige has painstakingly
duplicated Murneau's sets and weird atmosphere for the
film-within-a-film and the supporting cast is excellent.
On the Granger Movie Gauge of 1 to 10, "The Shadow of the
Vampire" is an eccentric, enigmatic 8. It's certainly the most
compelling, convincing vampire movie I've seen in years.

6. CELEBRITY PROFILE
==========
WILLEM DAFOE
================================================
Willem was born William Dafoe on July 22, 1955 and raised in
Appleton, Wisconsin and is the second-youngest of eight children.
Dafoe's acting career got off to a rather infamous start with an
appearance in a so-called soft-porn video, an endeavor for which
high school disciplinarians rewarded the young "thespian" with a
suspension. Drama courses at the University of Wisconsin failed
to hold his interest, so Dafoe set out for the big city -
Milwaukee, that is - where he joined the avant-garde Theatre X.
Two years of touring with the company showed him the greater part
of the U.S. and Europe. Dafoe's next stopover was Manhattan,
where, in 1977, he landed a promising role in a production with
the Performance Group.
Dafoe and the Performance Group artistic director Elizabeth
LeCompte eventually broke from the Performance Group to become
founding members of the now-celebrated Wooster Group, home also
to offbeat monologist Spalding (Swimming to Cambodia) Gray. The
group's unique multimedia-deconstructionist style of theatre
prepared Dafoe well for some of the more diverse roles he's
played throughout his career.
Willem made his film debut as a featured extra in Michael
Cimino's ill-conceived "Heaven's Gate." Although the film was a
big bomb Dafoe bounced back with his subsequent role as a
poet-biker in Kathryn Bigelow's "The Loveless." He then landed
his first sizable role in William Friedkin's "To Live and Die in
L.A." A year later, he earned a breakthrough (and
Oscar-nominated) role as the messiah-like Sergeant Elias in
Oliver Stone's "Platoon." Non-mainstream performances in
mainstream films followed, such as 1988's "Mississippi Burning,"
"Born on the Fourth of July," and Martin Scorsese's "The Last
Temptation of Christ." The 90's had Dafoe acting in such diverse
films as, "Wild at Heart," "Light Sleeper," "Body of Evidence,"
"English Patient," "Speed 2: Cruise Control," "Affliction," and
"eXistenZ." You can see Willem as Max Schreck in the upcoming
"Shadow of the Vampire."
