This is a good article.

The content seems to me to be another iteration of the "three-act
paradigm" of Syd Field, or of the "Nine-Act Structure" by somebody
else (I forget who), but useful, nonetheless.

Thanks for bringing it up, Freon.

Eight Sequence Structure Outline

by Warren Hsu Leonard (Hollywood Calif.)  www.screenwritinglife.com

Here’s an outline of the eight sequence structure, based on Frank Daniel’s work, and with many thanks to John Cox and Neal Romanek.

SEQUENCING METHOD

ACT I

SEQUENCE ONE:

First, “hook” the audience to get them interested in watching further, often done by posing a puzzle, raising questions in their mind, and promising an answer.

Then provide exposition: who, what, when, where, etc. Introduce the MC – give a glimpse of MC’s life “before” the story itself begins; gives a sense of what the MC’s life would have been like if the events that lead to the story hadn’t interfered.

Establish MC’s Inner Conflict: show what they want, which is often different from and in contrast to what they really need.

Inciting Incident or Point of Attack: (At approx. 10 pp. mark) Intrusion of instability on initial flow of life, forcing MC to respond. Often takes form of New Opportunity, even new geographic place.

SEQUENCE TWO:

Sequence sets up the Main Tension (MT), and the corresponding Central Dramatic Question (CDQ) that Act II will address.

First, MC attempts to grapple with the destabilizing element introduced at Inc. Inc. above. MC has every expectation that the problem will be solved and the story finished after this first attempt to solve the problem.

Whatever solution MC attempts backfires or otherwise fails to solve the problem, instead leading to a bigger predicament.

Plot Point : (At approx. 25 pp.) A dramatic event that blows the MC’s world apart, creating the MT and the CDQ.

ACT II

SEQUENCE THREE:

MC makes first attempt to solve MT problem – choosing the easiest solution to the problem, hoping it will resolve the problem immediately.

MC generally fails, and things can become life threatening at this stage.

MC may successfully resolve a lesser problem, the problem at the sequence level, but the resolution of that problem undoubtedly leads to much bigger and deeper problems, rather than the resolution of the MT and the CDQ.

SEQUENCE FOUR:

MC’s first attempt has failed, and MC is forced to try one or more desperate measures to return his life to stability.

Out of the ashes rises a New Hope. After MC takes new action, things turn around, and a Major Truth is revealed, causing:

Mid-Point or First Culmination: a Major Reversal of fortune, making MC’s task even more difficult.

Often, give the audience a very clear glimpse of an answer to the CDQ – the hope that MC will actually succeed at resolving his problem – only to see circumstances turn the story the other way. First Culmination may be a glimpse at the actual resolution of the picture, or its mirror opposite.

———– Mid Point ———-

ACT II (cont.)

SEQUENCE FIVE:

MC works on whatever New Complication arose in the First Culmination – trying to confirm or deny the Major Truth leads to a Discovery and: A Major Twist or Action and greater jeopardy.

May again give a glimpse of apparent success or failure, though usually not as profound as at the First Culmination.

New characters may be introduced, new opportunities may present themselves, and subplots may be developed.

As always, resolution of tension in this sequence does not resolve the MT/CDQ, but merely creates new complications, usually more difficult with higher stakes.

SEQUENCE SIX:

MC has now eliminated or lost the chance to use all easy potential solutions to solve the MT, and must take one last Desperate Action, creating:

The Climax or Second Culmination – in which the MC must face her greatest fear directly. The MT and CDQ are resolved and answered respectively.

Key to the Second Culmination: either completely resolves the MT and CDQ, or “reframes” them significantly. It doesn’t have to be the “low point” of the story, as many have suggested.

Gives the audience yet another glimpse of the possible outcome of the picture. Can mirror the end of the film. The glimpse can be of the actual resolution, or more typically, its mirror opposite.

The movie could end here, but the resolution would be unsatisfying and incomplete.

ACT III

SEQUENCE SEVEN:

New tension created, new setting, new objective, all created by the unexpected consequences arise from the apparent or actual resolution of the MT/CDQ.

May force MC to work against her previous objectives. Story can be turned upside down/glimpsed from a new angle.

Stakes are even higher, and the pace can become frenzied.

Resolution of this sequence is characterized by a Major Twist – the new course of action pays of dramatically in this major twist or Reversal.

Resolution of MC’s problem – the instability created by the Inc. Inc./point of Attack is finally settled completely.

SEQUENCE EIGHT:

Having been given a glimpse of the resolution at the First and Second Culmination points, and to a lesser extent at the end of each sequence, the tension of the story is at last fully and completely resolved.

Re-introduce MC and her life, “over-delivering” on the hopes or fears of the audience. The resolution creates a life significantly better than our fondest hopes for MC, or dramatically worse than our greatest fears for MC.

Either way, the audience must realize that MC got what she needs, but in a manner totally unexpected. Resolution is satisfying.

This morning on "Good Morning America" (I think it was), there was an
interview with Bruce Willis about this movie.

Come to think of it, it was Diane Sawyer, so it has to be GMA...

Anyway, the forward about the stealth effects work was interesting/cool.

Mr. X Provides Invisible Effects for '16 Blocks'

It's hard to spot their fingerprints on this cop thriller.

Toronto, Ontario (PRWEB) February 27, 2006 -- Toronto-based visual effects firm Mr. X, Inc., has completed the visual effects work on 16 BLOCKS, a new film from legendary director Richard Donner. The action thriller, which stars Bruce Willis and Mos Def, required the sorts of 'invisible' enhancements that have become increasingly common in the past few years.

"Dick (Donner) was not looking to add splashy 'in your face' visual effects," recalls Visual Effects Supervisor Evan Jacobs. "In fact, I think the audience will be hard-pressed to pick out our work on this film."

Few effects were planned for while the film was shooting on location in Toronto. "I read the script and met with Donner, and I said, 'we have to be a part of this film'," says Jacobs. "The producers kept saying there weren't any effects needed, but we kept after them, offering to help any way we could. Sure enough, when they got into the editing room, they started seeing the possibilities."

Much of the work Mr. X contributed to the film 16 BLOCKS centered around addressing continuity oversights or altering the original photography. For example, in order to earn a PG-13 rating from the MPAA, the filmmakers asked the visual effects team to remove blood from several shots. "Often we're asked to add gore, so it was interesting to have to reduce it," recalls Jacobs.

One of the key sequences involved adding CG sparks and smoke to a bus chase. "The production footage had some physical elements, but they wanted to add more. The results are subtle, but they really add to the excitement of the sequence."

Although their work may go unnoticed by most moviegoers, Jacobs is still satisfied. "I'm not a big fan of visual effects for its own sake," he says. "Our goal is to collaborate and support the filmmaker's vision, wherever that takes us. Sometimes, as on this film, it's what you don't see that makes the difference."

16 BLOCKS is a character-driven action thriller that stars Bruce Willis as Jack Mosley, a broken-down NY detective assigned to escort a petty criminal (Mos Def) from the precinct to the courthouse. The seemingly simple 16-block journey becomes a test of character for them when Jack's ex-partners attempt to stop them. It's the story of how two men change each other during a tense 110-minute struggle between life and death. The film is scheduled for wide release on March 3rd, 2006.

Who is Mr. X?
Bringing together a unique mix of artists, filmmakers, VFX supervisors, and programmers, Mr. X specializes in partnering with filmmakers to provide story-driven visual enhancements. The artists and creative minds at Mr. X are known for their superb, photo-realistic achievements in CGI, their skills in digital matte painting, VFX compositing, and Post/VFX supervision, as well as for their realistic digital creations of epic-scale and otherwise impossible stunts. With a studio equipped with a rare mix of the latest imaging technologies, the team at Mr. X is committed to pushing the limits of the digital realm, and in making the impossible, possible.

With credits on dozens of distinguished projects including A History of Violence, Four Brothers, The Greatest Game Ever Played, Ice Princess, Assault on Precinct 13, Resident Evil: Apocalypse, Dawn of the Dead (2004), and many more, Mr. X helps to define the very look and feel of a film.

The only software I have is MGI VideoWave 5. It's a super-basic tool that does
nothing to help develop a story. As could be expected, it is borderline a
hindrance to completing anything. if I hadn't spent all of my money on the
Radio Free Fandom booth, I might have tried to buy something better.

While I'm on the subject (PS Al, I'm gonna surf over and look at those files
as soon as I have more than a couple minutes on the keyboard) I was
considering a short-film script contest for Penguicon. I figured a limited
demo like Storyview would work well for short subjects but of course
whatever we use would probably have to run well under Linux or at least
their Windows port Wine etc. Any thoughts along that notion would be
helpful.

I've tried some of the demos of story development software... some
I've liked, and some I haven't.

I have found some freeware tools I'll be putting up on the "Files"
section shortly. A couple of templates for MS Word (laugh if you
will, but it *is* incredibly popular), an "object-oriented" XML-based
screenplay writer, a plot-logic clarifier (you'll have to see it; I
can't explain it adequately) and a storyboard planner. Good tools,
great price.
Let me know what you think.

Let's take stock of what we have here.

We have a few people who are interested, some who *say* they're
interested, and others who just read, nod, and move on.

At least, that's how I read it so far.

I have a couple of short scripts I'll be posting in the "Files" area

expense, as I see it.

Let me know.

There is a local website for indie films that was not posted on the
Michfanfilm's site. CrewDocs is not necessarily genre, but it might
be a good place to learn something about making films. I was an
un-paid extra in one scene in a movie "Trap" that was filmed several
years ago that I learned about through CrewDocs. Actually it was a a
sample of the script for the purpose of getting funding.
