ORGANIZERS LAUNCH PROGRAM FOR DETROIT WINDSOR INTERNATIONAL FILM
FESTIVAL FOR 2008
APRIL 24, 2007- DETROIT, MI— Building on the momentum of the
recently announced Detroit River Days, a Detroit group of organizers
is planning to launch an initiative for an international film
festival in conjunction with 2008 events. The organizers plan to
involve all local university and community college film departments
as well as independent film makers in the activities. "This is an
open and inclusive effort to showcase metropolitan Detroit during
the best part of the year- summer!" said former State Senator John
Kelly who is spearheading the group.
The range of proposed events include films in the parks along
the shoreline as well as at theaters and local academic institutions
in conjunction with seminars on filmmaking, cinematography, script
writing, acting workshops and a variety of cinemagraphic topics for
students of the film arts. "We hope to converge several of the
smaller on-going film festivals and related events into this project
to make it the catalyst for one major event for Detroit", said Kelly.
The discussion will take place on Tuesday, May 8, 2007 at
Stage 3 Productions located at 27500 Donald Court in Warren and will
be open to the community. Doors open at 6 p.m. It is envisioned that
the film festival will take place on both sides of the Detroit River
and provide an event that welcomes the World concurrent to the
Detroit River Days next year. The inaugural festival is slated for
June/July 2008.
Kelly, currently Vice Chairperson of the Michigan Film
Advisory Commission is a Visiting Professor of political science at
the University of Windsor, and is recruiting the creative community
in the Detroit metropolitan area and Windsor, Ontario to become
stakeholders in the festival.
With the Detroit River as the focal point this festival will
ironically be one of the few truly "International" events between 2
countries. The festival will celebrate the uniqueness of two large,
metropolitan cities of two nations who share a common, open border
across a vital, thriving riverfront.
Organizations planning to attend, include the Michigan
Production Alliance, the Detroit Film Center, the Michigan Economic
Development Corporation, The SEMAFX Network, Superhouse.org, the
Creative Energy Alliance and a representative of Mayor Kwame
Kilpatrick.
The city of Detroit has been host to major national events,
including Superbowl XL and the 2005 Major League Baseball All-Star
Game, and in 2009 we will host the NCAA Men's Final Four
Tournament. These events have provided the city and local region
opportunities to display our vitality and excellence to the world.
The Detroit Windsor International Film Festival plans to build upon
this success by welcoming the global film community in the summer of
2008.
