It depends... are you doing Mac (as Bill K. is, it seems), Windows, or
some flavor of Linux/UNIX/FreeBSD?
For Win, there are several in the free category... ZweiStein, which
has a high learning curve, Avid Free (which also has a steep curve),
and several freeware/shareware editors, which can be gotten from
freeware/shareware download sites.
BTW, as I've learned from Mister Technogeek Mike Rudas, OS X is a Mac
interface version of UNIX, IIRC.
