Hello!
It's Vicci Smith, host and producer of  "She-TV', looking for crew, for a special hour-long, live show. [This will be instead of our usual third Tuesday slot.]  I would need half the crew members to come to the center by 5:00p.m., the rest by 5:30 p.m.
This show will have call-ins and a live studio audience, one set, and a roll-in.  Please let me know if you can help!

Thanks for your feedback Tom. We'll get it right. Audio only for dialup
users is essential. I hope I can keep trying out new tweaks with you.

I only have a dial-up connection -- 40 kbps at the time of my test. Not
surprisingly, I didn't get anything usable in the way of video. The audio-only
link didn't work much better. There was a lot of stuttering which, even if I
were willing to put up with it, obscured the content too much to be useful. I'm
still on QuickTime 6.something; maybe that was the problem.

I don't know what the difference is, but the PPJC video streaming worked quite
well on the same connection. I got clear audio with occasional video stills --
quite usable for most content. The URL is

Dear Media Center Board Members, Producers, Crew and Staff,

Thanks to those of you who found time to sample the web streams and give me
some feedback.  We've made a few tweaks and would appreciate if you could
try them again. For those of you with a cable modem or DSL or other
broadband connection, click on this link:

http://www.communitymediacenter.net/watch/videos/ch27_live.html

For those of you with a dial up connection, click on this audio only link:

http://www.communitymediacenter.net/watch/videos/ch27audio_live.mov

Both URL's above will give you Channel 27.

When you reply to me with your feedback it would help if you tell me what
kind of computer operating system and internet connection you have if you
know it.  Also tell me if you are accessing it from work or home since some
workplaces have a firewall that degrades or prevents the signal.

Hopefully the picture will be clear and the sound will match up with the
speakers' lips.

We will soon have a button that will allow you to double the screen size,
but it's not yet in place.

Remember that it will only work if you have Quicktime software on your
computer.  Apple computers have it.  To download a free copy for a PC, go
to:     http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html

We're not yet "ready for primetime," so please don't publicize the URL's at
this point.  Thanks again for your help!

Sincerely,
Elliot

I've been watching the CH 27 stream, and it seems fine. I wonder,
though, if you have any idea why I can't choose a "full screen"
option. Does this have something to do with Media Center's setup, or
is it a "quick time" thing. I've never watched streaming video
before, but with other sources, the Quick Time player offers a full
scren option regardless of the resolution of the source - at least I
THINK it does.

Good going, and keep on truckin' !.

Dear Media Center Producers and Crew,
We've been working on something new and exciting that I want to share with
you.  Also I'd like to ask for your help as "beta-testers" of the
work-in-progress.

We are developing the capacity to webcast our channels.  In other words,
potential viewers (in any part of the world) will be able to check out our
channels via the internet!  In the first phase we will webcast the
government Channels 26 and 29, soon to be followed by Channel 27.
Eventually, as we purchase more equipment, we will webcast Channels 28 and
30 as well.

A bit further down the road, we will launch "video-on-demand" services,
whereby programs or clips from programs can be archived and accessed at any
time.

I would appreciate if you would test out the signal we have generated for
Channels 26 and 27.  Please respond to me and let me know if the picture and
sound are coming in clearly to your computer.  This is a test only. Please
do not publicize these URL's as we are not yet ready to launch.  We may have
a lot more "tweaking" to do.

You must have Quicktime Player software on your computer.  If you have a PC
without Quicktime on it, you can download it for free at:
  http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html
If you have a Mac, it should be on your computer, but if you want the latest
version for free, download it at:
  http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/mac.html

Here are the two URL's to test.  Once you click on the URL, it should
automatically play the channel in a Quicktime player box.  If you only have
a dialup connection to the internet, you should hear the audio clearly, but
only see one new frame of video per second.

Thanks very much.

Hello Everyone,
Are you someone who likes Chinese food and has an interest in the holistic community? Alternative Medicine? Healers? Psychics?

I'm looking for crew members to share Chinese dinner and crew for my guests: Dr. Berta Hines, medical intuitive and Dr. Rob Rostau, Qi Center Director. He's blended chiropractic medicine with Eastern modalities in his center. I'll interview them about their paths to their current positions.  It'll be a fascinating hour. You may also get answers to those nagging questions you may have about aches and pains that don't warrant the doctor's office visit.

Start time 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. I'm looking for these roles: director, floor director, telephone, teleprompter, camera people.

I'll be out of town June 22- July 1.  But leave me a message on the phone or email me if you can join us.

Best regards,

Hi,

I can join you on July 6, but will probably be a few minutes later than
7:30. I can easily do floor director, camera, CG, or switcher -
whichever you need. I have directed once, and would be willing to try
again for a simple show.

I'd be happy to learn telephone & teleprompter too.

I'll see you then.

Subject: [media_center] Deko class - take it!

Last night I joined 5 other students in Nancy Brown's Deko class.  Although a lot of this
was review for me, I really appreciated the opportunity to learn in a systematic way, free
from the pressure of getting the titles and credits done right before a show.  Thanks to
Nancy and the students for a good experience!

Also, it's great to work with the others in the class, hearing ideas and needs from other
shows and other viewpoints.

My reasons for taking this were two:
1. Frustration with the seemingly random behavior of text.  It can't be random - it's a
computer program!
2. The "superstitions" that surround Deko - there's a folklore about how to do common
tasks, but often these aphorisms didn't make sense to me.

In this class I learned that each section of text (layer) can be manipulted easily **IF** one
selects all the text.  This can be done with control-shift-A (for "All").  Then changing font,
text size, or alignment works on the entire region.

Second, whenever any part of a text box is moved independent of the rest, it creates a new
layer, i.e. an independent text box.  I believe this is the biggest reason for the apparently
random behavior of Deko files.  As files, especially credit rolls, evolve, the text gets split
up in ways that most of us don't understand, so it continues to get worse over time.

Third, starting from a clean graphic is often easier than fixing an old one.

Fourth - reading the tutorial manual is very helpful - I looked through several chapters
during the class, and there is a wealth of information, including many keyboard shortcuts.

In particular, there is ways to combine different text blocks into one, and many other great
hints.

I urge you to sign up for the next Deko intro class on July 18, and for the advanced classes
on June 13 or August 26.

Yes you, the volunteers,

Do you realize that it cost thousands of dollars to do a real tv show
on the air.
Pepsi and levi spend about a half million a month to commercial tv
interests.
Beer and wine support sports and McDonalds to feed out minds to eat out.

We provide the alternative to commercial tv, and we count alot, to the
eager minds
ready to learn about the world. Keep up the good work it pays off in
the end.
Be proud of what you offer in services, you make it happen.

Hi.
Welcome to the new Media Center listserv!

Here's some information about a current problem on our web site.
<http://www.communitymediacenter.net>

Some of you may have noticed that our program schedule calendar on the Media
Center web site has been down for a number of weeks. We apologize for the
inconvenience. The schedule software suddenly began to malfunction and our
ISP took it down because it was slowing down the whole server that we share
with some of their other customers.

We went through a cycle of trying to repair the software, but it still
wouldn¹t work right. We¹ve been in the process of looking at other backend
databases as well as solutions such as iCal that won¹t require a backend
database. We are also consulting with other community media centers.

I definitely didn¹t think it would take this long. The good news is that we
think we¹ve found a couple of promising solutions. The bad news is that it
will still require customization work on the front end, staff training, and
possible data base customization. My best estimate is that we are still
three weeks away. Again, I apologize.

Meanwhile our program director, Jesse Norfleet, can email an EXCEL chart to
anybody that would like to see the schedule. His email address is:
<jesse@...>.

Take care.
