Two of Australia's leading stars to play the coveted leading role of
SALLY BOWLES in Sam Mendes' CABARET.
Tina Arena in Sydney - Lisa McCune in Melbourne
"Once in a while, a Broadway revival comes along that is so
inventive, so galvanic, that theatregoers feel they are experiencing
something entirely new..." - New York Times
Oscar Award winning Director, Sam Mendes' stunning and seductive
revival production of Cabaret opened in London in 1995 and
immediately became the hottest ticket in town. Soon after it
transferred to New York winning a cavalcade of awards and was
described as having the most heart-stopping finale in Broadway
memory. This revolutionary reinvention of the hit musical brought
the 'seedy glamour' of the legendary Kit Kat Klub to Broadway, and
is now on its way to Sydney to open at the State Theatre on 15
August 2002.
Producers Barry & Fran Weissler and Stephen Flint Wood, Worldwide
Managing Director of IMG Arts & Entertainment, the producers who
brought you Chicago The Musical, said today "after months of
speculation, complex negotiations and immense secrecy about the
prestigious lead role, IMG and Barry & Fran Weissler are thrilled to
be able to announce that two of Australia's greatest artists, Tina
Arena and Lisa McCune, are to play the lead role of Sally Bowles in
Sam Mendes' groundbreaking production. The Sydney production,
opening on 15 August will star Tina Arena, and the Melbourne
production, opening 4 December, will star Lisa McCune. We are
delighted to have such great musical stars in this production,
bringing their own magic to this internationally acclaimed
production."
Lisa McCune is one of Australia's most popular and successful
television and theatre actors, working constantly and earning an
impressive collection of awards celebrating her performances,
including four Gold Logies for Most Popular Personality on
Australian Television. In 1999 Lisa made the difficult decision to
leave 'Blue Heelers' to star as Maria Rainer in the Gordon Frost
production of 'Sound Of Music'.
The producers were also thrilled to confirm today that a number of
the Australian cast will be working with the director Sam Mendes in
New York in the coming months to realise his unique vision for this
acclaimed production.
"Vibrant! Sam Mendes has brilliantly re-energized Cabaret!" -
Richard Zoglin, Time
"A sensational new Cabaret like you've never seen before- A
diabolical hit!"
- Michael Sommers, Star Ledger
"More Glorious than ever" - Time Out, New York
A full cast announcement, and media launch with opportunities to
meet the cast, will be held in April. Following the Melbourne season
Cabaret will embark on a national and Asian tour.
