I don't think Merril would have been allowed to select Northern American locations, since that is not the Church's current position (to the degree that they have one) as to where the Book of Mormon stories took place.

Merrill is pretty much embracing what the general understanding of BofM locations were in Joseph's day. Can you say "HIll Cumorah?" Or Zeniff, the Lamanite prophet?

There are problems wherever you place the Book of Mormon. Placing it in Mezo-America, for instance, you have to deal with the Sea West and the East being actually North and South and a narrow neck of land that is anything but narrow, a few other things like that.

Neither location (or any other, for that matter) is without its problems.

The other book, 'An Ancient American Setting for the Book of Mormon' is FARMS' contribution to the discussion of Book of Mormon geography and ranks as one of the best on the subject.  Details are at the Neal A. Maxwell Institute site at BYU.

A DVD about the subject also made by FARMS, etc., proposes Guatemala and nearby regions as the area, but even then, we could be just as far off.  The book itself only describes things in very general terms.

As to the locations for the filming itself, it was the best anyone could do given the above.  If we don't know something for sure, we should have the place be as generic as possible so as to not advance one theory over another.  Or, as in this case, use the most widely accepted theory for continuity purposes.  We only need look at 'The Ten Commandments' for direction, as we don't know all the details on where the Mount Sinai of Moses' time actually was.  We have a place called that today, but was that the actual one?  Again, Cecil B. DeMille did the best he could with available facts and postulations.

But just where was the landing site? 'The land northward?  etc.  It won't be until either after we have passed from this life that we know, or the Second Coming, or some pronouncement by one of the Presidents of the Church, whatever one comes first.

WHAT NOT TO DO IN A SCREENPLAY
IF YOU WANT IT TO SELL

Writer/producer and script consultant, Peter Myers,
shares the most common mistakes screenwriters make which lessen a script's
chances of getting a greenlight

A free talk on
November 17, 7:00 p.m. (free parking on premises)

At Author Services, 7051
Hollywood Boulevard (at Sycamore), L.A. CA 90028

In recent years, in addition to his writing and producing, Peter Myers
has analyzed over eighty screenplays for writers, producers and directors.
Two feature films (one in L.A., and one in Alaska) were shot in 2009,
using scripts rewritten according to Peter's analyses, with a third
scheduled for later in 2009, and a fourth scheduled for 2010 at England's
famous Pinewood Studios. Peter's p ractical advice to writers will appear
in "Now Write! Screenwriting," due in bookstores soon.

Peter sees the same flaws in most scripts he analyzes: Errors in
premise, theme, tone, character development, dialogue, plotting,
structure, rhythm, pacing, format or marketability. Due, partly, to the
stiff competition, these mistakes can sabotage a sale. Peter goes over
them in detail.

Peter has been hired to write, rewrite, or has optioned, over ten feature
scripts and has had material produced for the media of syndicated
television and cable. One of his scripts won an Honorable Mention in the
script competition at the Thunderbird Int'l Film Festival. Peter
developed a script for a Best Picture Oscar-winning producer which (as a
$50-$75 million movie), went into the packaging stage at the prestigious
William Morris Agency.

As either writer or producer, Peter currently has five pro jects on
the development/production slates of four independent film companies in
Southern California. Three of his projects are part of a five-picture,
$240 million film slate which he created with producer Karen Kramer, widow
of the great producer/director, Stanley Kramer.

I have been working on a new film event plan for some time now. Part of this
plan was to host frequent small film competitions. Those competitions are to
focus on various themes. I am slowly getting the website put together, but it
is very time consuming, and it is slow getting funding put together in this
economy. I decided to get the first competition going even though the entire
website is not completed. You can read about this competition here:

http://www.wasatchfilmbash.com/fit.html

I would like input on what else we can do. I thought that possibly putting
every 25 entries into a drawing for a $50 Amazon.com gift certificate would help
the competition, but I would like to know what you think of that.

Any other comments you have would be appreciated. I was successful working on
another small film festival, but this economy has made creating this new one a
bit slower.

Hey Everyone,
I'm excited to be part of this group!  My wife and I just built a website called MormonsMadeSimple.com which uses simple, explanatory videos to promote Mormon beliefs.  We took a very fun, casual approach to these videos so that members can feel comfortable posting them to blogs and social networking sites.  They're not real "in your face" or preachy--for lack of a better word.

Anyway, I'd love to get some feedback on this video genre.  Specifically, is it effective or ineffective.  And any ideas on how I can spread these videos?

Thanks,
Doug

To be honest, I was wondering about that same sentence.
On one hand, the warning to not see the trailer is given together with
the link to the actual trailer; which makes you question if the
warning was really a warning or a very clever way to awake the
reader's curiosity. In that case, the whole thing - although somewhat
misleading - is trivial.
However, on the other hand there's the possibility that it was a
sincere warning, and then we are not talking about trivial things. We
could be talking about a host of serious subjects.
One of them is the attitudes we so easy adopt towards other people's
spirituality. Are we really worried about our neighbors (ie. the other
members of this group) spirituality, or are we moved by our desire to
look better than others instead? It's as if we need to be reassured by
pointing at others' weaknesses and opportunities to fall. It is too
close to the pharisaic attitudes of Jesus' times.
Another one is the concept of a testimony. Would a person stop
believing in Jesus as his/her Savior by seeing the naked body of a
woman? Would a person who knows Joseph Smith is a prophet, stop
knowing it after watching the trailer of a violent and mundane movie?
Of course, the more we are in contact with spiritually debilitating
influences, the more weak our spirit becomes... but to lose a
testimony is the consequence of far deeper processes than watching a
raw movie trailer.
Another subject that comes out from the original post is the
narrowness of mind that is becoming the rule more than the exception.
We are losing the ability to question, to think by ourselves, to reach
our own conclusions. It is far easier to accept without questions, to
believe in what others believe, to follow; and thus, our principles
and our very testimony are nothing but a mere cultural influence: the
product of the circles we frequent. To own certain principles and
beliefs, we have to put them to the test by ourselves, not by other
people.
For example, do you think the image of a naked body is intrinsically
evil? If so, why? Would it be that we have accepted other people's
perceptions without making the effort of acquiring our own
perceptions? If we think about where the evil of nudeness resides, it
is obvious that the evil is not in nudeness but in the minds and
hearts of evil people watching it. If you are not evil, is it possible
to perceive nudeness as art, for example? Are you able to appreciate
beauty with purity in the presence of nudeness?
Those are questions everybody has to ask themselves before we throw
our judgments around. And even if you discover that yes, nudeness is
evil for you; you have to be aware that maybe for other people
nudeness is not evil. Same thing towards language (a complete
contextual issue), fashion (another subject depending on contexts), etc.
And now that we are in the mood, is Richard's movie trailer evil? Does
it depict evil characters as good?, does it describe evil intentions
as acceptable?, does it present evil acts as justifiable? From what
I've seen, it's the other way around: it shows evil as evil. Isn't
that positive?
But then, our cultural narrowness kicks in and we lose sight of the
real meaning of things because we get stuck in a few naked scenes.
Consider in comparison our own opinions about films done by non-LDS
filmmakers that present evil acts as admissible, as acceptable and
even desirable but, since they don't show nudeness, we don't jump in
judgment closing our minds to deeper perceptions.
Some thoughts :)

That's one way of saying it, though back when I had a raging testimony, I loved slasher movies. Still do.

Which brings up an interesting queston, at least interesting to me. Is there some kind of universal (among LDS) plateau which is the same (or should it be the same) for believing LDS filmmakers, or is that something that should be decided on a more subjective basis? I know Kieth Merrill thinks that all LDS filmmakers should think alike.

The trailer is typical slasher movie gore, but it also shows quite a
bit of nudity.

Better said, if you've lost your testimony, this is the kind of movie
you might choose to make.

Surely you jest. "You might lose your testimony?" IMO, anyone whose testimony is so fragile that a single trailer would cause them to lost it never had a testimony in the first place.

Are you wondering if your script is ready to go out to producers,
directors and stars?

Do you want to take your script to the next level, sell it quickly
and have it get made?

Do you know whether the script is ready for the marketplace, or what
to fix in the rewrite?

After examining your script's premise, tone, character development,
dialogue, plotting, structure, rhythm, pacing, format, and overall
marketability, Peter Myers will give you a spot-on, extensive write-
up showing which areas need work --- to give you a better shot at
selling it!

Peter has done this for indie production companies in which he was a
partner, and he became very sharp at it!

Peter has sold, written for hire, or optioned ten feature scripts and
has had a number of things produced for the media of syndicated
television and cable. In 2005, a script of his won an Honorable
Mention in the script competition at the Thunderbird Int'l Film
Festival.

Peter has been in dialogue with 2006 Oscar/Golden Globe nominee,
actor Terrence Howard – who asked him to work on a project. Peter has
also developed a script with Best Picture Oscar-winning producer,
Fred Roos.

Peter has himself produced short films and is producing one of his
own theatrical feature scripts in 2009 on a $5 million dollar budget,
so he analyzes scripts from the viewpoint of a writer/producer.

Peter began 2009 by being hired to write a suspense drama feature
film about a love triangle, and was also brought on as a script
consultant on two feature films going immediately into production in
Janauary, 2009: FROZEN, currently shooting in Alaska, and
KIDNAPPED, currently shooting in Los Angeles. Both scripts were
rapidly rewritten according to Peter's recommendations.

You can reach Peter at 323-821-7349, 323-464-8537 or email him at
peterdavidmyers@.... Peter's analysis fee is $250.00 -- 1-2
week turnaround. The writer gets an in-depth analysis that goes way
beyond "coverage", which usually only covers the script generally and
doesn't cover details. Peter's detailed analyses usually run,
single-spaced, anywhere from 7 or 8 pages up to 15 pages in length.
Average coverage is 2 or 3 pages.

Hello,

I have been working with the Gloria Film Festival for several years.
After last summer's festival, it looked to me like it might not
continue. I hope it does because it had a good mission and showcased
some wonderful films. Due to the uncertain future of the event, I
chose not to continue working with it and focus more on my teaching
career.

I have been receiving continued correspondence from filmmakers who
have been a part of the Gloria Film Festival, and they encouraged me
to start a new event. After a lot of consideration, I have decided to
do that. We are now putting together a new event called the Wasatch
Summer Film Bash. I have a number of people who were with me at the
Gloria Film Festival, but we need more volunteers. We need volunteers
in all areas. If you are interested in helping us put together this
new event, please let me know.

The Wasatch Film Bash is focusing on student films, and I am
considering adding a focus on instructional films. I think it would be
wonderful to showcase such films and help those filmmakers market
their projects.

I am continually fine tuning the website, but you can get information
at http://www.wasatchfilmbash.com. If you are interested in helping,
please contact me, and we can arrange a time to meet.

Thanks,
Kevin

Hello All,

I'm looking for a stage where I can shoot a teaser for a dance film. There will be about 10-15 people total including crew and dancers. This is to happen on the 6th and 7th of this week/month. If you know of a location in Provo or SLC that may be open, please get in touch with me.  Looking for a place on the very cheep side.  Ideally the stage would already have lights.

The location will be needed for about 8 hours each day.

Thanks
