NEW DELHI: Actor Mohanlal who broke the walls of reel life to become Lieutenant Colonel, made his presence at the annual parade held to commensurate the 60th birthday of the Territorial Army here on Monday, turning it a proud moment for the Malayali community world over.Mohanlal, along with his wife Suchitra, shared the gallery with Defence Minister A K Antony, Army Chief Deepak Kapoor and other senior officers to witness the parade of the Territorial Army, of which he is a part. Mohanlal, who is also the brand ambassador of the Territorial Army, said it was one of the best moments in his life - to be the part of the Indian Army, which has been 'serving the nation altruistically.“

Being a part of this great institution is overwhelming.I am extremely proud of this achievement and thankful for this honour. Also, the Madras Regiment, to which I belong, has had a longstanding relation with Kerala, since the time of the kingdom of Travancore”, he told Express.

Marking the third decade of his indelible career on screen, Mohanlal was bestowed with the rank of Honorary Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army for his roles in films like Keerthi Chakra and Kurukshetra, which portrayed the real plight and vigour of the army men who fight against all odds.He had shared the real lives of the Army personnel in actual conflict zones, displaying his passion for the Army and realistically portraying the penultimate, fearless and duty-bound Army officer in these films.

The Indian Military Academy had put him through a crash course on military etiquette to prepare him for induction into the elite service.He had since been part of the Kerala-based 122 Infantry Battalion Madras (Kannur Terriers).“By mid-December, I will join the battalion at Kannur and attend the training sessions. Being a part of this great organisation, I will do my level best to promote the sense of patriotism among the younger generation. We also plan media interactions as part of the promotional activities”, said Mohanlal.

"Vikram Sarabhai was very down to earth too,'' says the chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro). He has just overseen India's first mission to the moon, but he wears this enormous achievement lightly. If you are looking for a Chandrayaan- propelled swagger, Nair is not the man. "You know,'' he continues, not yet done on the subject of Sarabhai, "he never differentiated between big scientists and basic engineers. He would treat everyone like a friend. The unique thing about him was that he never hesitated to accept ideas from anyone or from any quarter. He would take ideas with equal ease from the very young and from those with a Ph.D. I believe Isro has imbibed what I'd like to call the Sarabhai culture. If Isro has seen success today, we owe it all to that culture.'' He doesn't forget to mention the other ignited mind, Dr APJ Kalam, either. "He was a leader and a leader should have vision and conviction that the vision would happen. The ability to learn from failure is crucial. That's something I picked up from Dr Kalam. If there's failure , the leader should own up, but if there's success, the credit should go to the team." And the question all scientists are asked: Is he a man of god? There is a lot of science in him, but is there spirituality? "I think there is a spirit embedded in everyone,'' he says. "The feeling is that everything in a given situation can't be explained by a physical or chemical process, that there is something beyond our comprehension despite doing everything humanly possible. That arena is what we call destiny - sacred forces that define your destiny. At least that's how I can explain and understand the turning points of my life." Nair says he offers prayers, but is not religious . "You could say I'm spiritual," he says. "Prayers bring me a certain peace. Prayers help see you through conflicting situations and handle critical problems. I visit temples but not too often. I go to Guruvayur and I sometimes visit Tirupati and Sabarimala." The serious stuff, though, as Isro head and secretary, Department of Space, is for the workplace . At home, he would rather leaf through a P G Wodehouse or Madhava Kutty. And the hype over Arvind Adiga's The White Tiger and Khaled Hosseini's The Kite Runner haven't left him untouched. "I've been reading those,'' he says. "However, I have to keep abreast of the latest technological developments as technology happens to be my field. I read up on matters like spacecraft or inter-planetary explorations. '' At one point, Nair did read J Krishnamurti and Vedic literature. "I was influenced a bit, but that was a phase." And film? Nair says he adores Adoor Gopalakrishnan. "He has fantastic imagination. His movies are an art form. I like Mohan Lal (the actor) for entertainment. He can be humorous and he can portray emotions well. He also depicts local characters very well. He, sort of, puts you at ease, relaxes you. And the best thing about him is his own face - it's always bubbling with joy.'' He, however, steers clear of the Mohan Lal versus Mamootty debate. "They each have their own place." Nair isn't very fussy about food - he just doesn't have the time to be - but he "loves'' a traditional Kerala vegetarian meal. "I love avial, and then what we call kalan and olan. Even ada pradhaman (a kind of rice-based kheer) is delightful . I love the southern Kerala feast on banana leaf. They offer four types of sweets and though my doctor has told me to take care of diabetes, BP and all that, I don't let go when there's a good meal. I enjoy chicken too. When I'm away in Europe or US, I am comfortable with continental food." The biggest constraint for Nair is time. The Isro chairman is indeed a busy man. He's away from Bangalore almost 15 days every month, touring Isro centres all over the country, monitoring work spots and ensuring all related institutions are working. It's no wonder then that his wife Radha Kumari says she's not his first love. "Work is his first wife, I am his second," she says, smiling indulgently. "We don't get to spend too much time with each other. He's out most of the time, you see.'' Not to be outdone, Nair pipes up cheekily that this is exactly the secret of their "long-lasting' ' marriage from which they have two children , Dileepan and Jayakrishnan, both engineers . In fact, even daughter-in- law Meena is an engineer. "We've been married for 42 years now,'' Nair says, letting a broad smile sweep across his face. "We were neighbours.
