Chapter Two

There was a deep silence around the table as Sarah blew out the candles. None of
the usual joy that
came with the coming of a birthday.

"Did you make a wish?" Karen asked quietly, eyes fixed on Sarah intently.

The dark-haired girl nodded. "I wished to have Toby back"

"We all do" Karen whispered, reaching for Sarah's hand. "Maybe one day, we will"

Sarah's step-mother was referring to Jareth's promise. To come for Sarah when
she was 18. Granted,
Karen was somewhere inside hoping that Toby could be bargained with for Sarah,
but they all wished
that it could be true. ["Truth IS, the Goblin King wants BOTH of us"] Sarah
thought angrily.

"Anyone want some cake?" Robert broke the silence.

Karen and Sarah shook their heads.

"I've no appetite" Karen's eyes filled.

"Oh darling!" Robert said in sympathy, squeezing his wife's hand. He looked at
Sarah, eyes
hardening. "It's been three months since Toby was taken. And I've decided it's
time to take action"

"What do you mean?" Sarah asked, apprehensively. Her father looked so serious-

"Robert?" Karen questioned.

"I won't have my little girl defenseless against that monster" Robert said
slowly. "So I've
enrolled you in some self-defense classes. Hopefully, you'll learn quickly.
They'll show you how to
fight-without totally FAIR-methods"

"Dirty fighting too?" Sarah said with interest. She'd always wanted to do Ju
Jitzu or something
like that. Now, it could be a matter of her life. Who KNEW what Jareth wanted
with her....All
though she thought she had a GOOD idea.

"The manager of the club is an old friend. I didn't say WHY I wanted you to
learn these things,
just that it was needed swiftly. Your birthday is in 2 years exactly from today
and that's all we
have"

"I know. Then he comes for me" Sarah whispered. Her heart betrayed her,
thundering in her chest and
ears. Part of her feared and loathed the Goblin King's coming-but part of her
felt the excitement
and exhilaration. That HE, the Goblin King WANTED her. There COULD only be so
many reasons that he
wanted her when she was 18. Waiting until she was legally an adult. She
simultaneously paled and
reddened at her thoughts. She just couldn't get that KISS out of her head!

"Sarah?" Karen questioned faintly.

Sarah looked up to see both her parents looking at her in concern. "I'm-fine.
Just scared. I only
have two years of freedom"

"I know honey" Robert said quietly. "But we'll be here and won't let you go
without a fight"

Of course, nothing ever turns out the way you planned it...

She was dreaming again-but not her usual dream. Nothing at all to do with her
everyday life, nor
familiar faces. And the stranger thing was-she KNEW she was dreaming as it was
happening. The place
she was standing was as unusual, as it was beautiful. At her feet was sand,
golden and soft. Sarah
couldn't see anything around her, but for the sky. It was utterly magnificent in
colors of red,
gold and pink, with a hints of soft grey. It captivated her. Mesmerized. Sarah
looked down from the
sky, her brown eyes wide with delight and wonder. She should have been
frightened that all she
could see was the sky and the sand beneath her feet and nothing more, but she
wasn't. Even if there
was darkness all around her, where there should have been...something. It was
almost like-a
painting, half-finished. And Sarah felt the incompletion of the picture acutely.
She could
almost-but not quite-picture exactly WHAT the landscape hidden from her ought to
look like.

"Where am I?" Her voice echoed back at her, even as a breeze sprang up ,
bringing with a sweet
heady scent. A scent she knew well. "Roses?" She inquired, breathing deeply.

As her voice echoed around and faded, the sky shimmered, like fire. The light
increased, showering
golden sparkles of light down towards Sarah's upturned face. ["Like fairy dust"]
She thought
absently. It fell like a golden rain all around her, then blazed as brightly as
the sun. Sarah shut
her eyes against it, wincing. The light came through her eyelids, making her
peek out in curiosity.
Startlingly, the darkness around was disappearing, showing light beyond where
she was standing.
More sand appeared at her feet-then green appeared. Sarah realized that it was
grass. She watched
with bright eyes as the light seemed to catch on everything, spilling outwards
in every direction
like a wave at the beach. It spilled over everything, revealing grassy hills,
mountains in the
distance and-

"My god!" Sarah breathed, eyes impossibly wide. All around her were flowers.
Flowers of every
possible color and kind. All growing out from about a meter from her feet in the
sand. They went
for miles and miles. Something bright in the far distance before her caught her
gaze. She glanced
that way, narrowing her eyes against the bright light. Just as she recognized
what it was-she woke
up.

Sarah lay there for a long moment, eyes staring up at her white roof. She was
back in her bedroom
and awake. "What a dream" She whispered, still able to recall each detail of the
dream. She
frowned. All except the last thing. What was it she had seen in the distance
again?

She took a deep breath, still somehow smelling the scent of flowers. She looked
down-and gasped in
shock. Her bed, her entire bed was covered in roses! "Oh my god. How did this
get here?" She was
bewildered and excited. Sarah sat up abruptly, spilling roses from her chest.
She flung the covers
back, the roses going flying over half her room and dashed to her bedroom door.
She shook the
handle a few times, then stepped back nervously. It was locked. She spun again,
racing for her
window. A moment later, she sank back onto her bed, shaking. She was locked in
from the
inside-which meant there had been no way for anyone to get into her room.

Sarah lifted a single rose from the bed, bringing it to he face. It was a real
rose. Dew still
clung to it's blood red petals and stem. She smelt it carefully. Yes, a real
rose. This was the
scent she had smelt in her dreams. Sarah looked around, bewildered, strangely
excited and afraid.
Someone-SOMEHOW-had gotten into her room, spread dozens of newly-cut roses over
her entire bed and
left again without going through the window hair the door. And all without
waking her...Which could
only mean one thing.

Jareth was back for her.

She stood there for a long moment, in thought. "It's been 2 years exactly-But
I'm NOT 18 yet!" Her
heart began to thunder in her ears. ["What if he's not going to wait till I'm
18? What if he's
decided to take me now?!"] She looked around the room frantically, then at her
mirror. But there
was no sign of the Goblin King. Suddenly, the silence of her room was too much
for her. Sarah ran
for her door, flinging it open swiftly.

"KAREN! Dad!" She shouted, looking down the hall towards their room. Karen came
to the base of the
stairs and looked up, while her dad came out of the bedroom, a book in his hand.

"What is it, honey?" Karen demanded. Years earlier, Sarah would have been
absolutely flabbergasted
if her step-mother had said that endearment to her. But Karen and Sarah had
become very close since
Toby was kidnapped by Jareth. It was almost like having a real mom.

"Come into my room" Sarah gasped, pointing behind her. Karen came quickly up the
stairs, while
Robert strode past Sarah. Then both parents peered into the room. Sarah heard
Karen's startled
gasp, from her position behind them.

"Good lord! Where did all this come from?" Robert exclaimed.

"Three guesses" Sarah said dryly, inwardly afraid.

"The Goblin king" Karen said in tones of loathing. This was the man who had
taken her little boy
and turned him into a Goblin. Karen turned to face Sarah, resting her shoulder
against the doorway
wearily. "He's early"

"TOO early!" Sarah snapped. "I'm months off 18"

"You really thought he would go by the rules?" Robert said quietly. He ushered
his wife and
daughter from the room, closing the door behind him softly. "Sarah-"

"I know" She said quietly. "But there's nothing we can do if he takes me now.
All I can do is-rely
on what I've learnt"

"It will protect you to an extent" Karen nodded. The three moved slowly down the
stairs and into
the lounge, where they sat down on the couches.

"Maybe I can-stall?" Sarah said hopefully, breaking the silence.

"All we can do is to keep you busy" Robert said thoughtfully. "Keep you at
School amongst people as
much as we can. Go out nights with your friends"

"Keep active. He won't dare to take you in a crowd" Karen agreed.

With that resolved, her parents went back to their own business, leaving Sarah
quietly pensive on
the couch. She sighed, as fear and excitement warred inside her. Undeniably, the
Goblin King
attracted her-but he also scared her. This was a newer, different game and
dangerous. ["I don't
know Karen"] She thought, staring blankly at the carpet. ["I have a feeling the
Goblin King will
try anything to get me. EVEN risk a crowd"]
