Barnsley dialect - unchanged today?   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #90 of 460 |
Hello all. I'm delighted to become a member of this group: Kes is one
of my favourite ever British films and Loach is my favourite British
director - I watch every film he makes. I'm actually an English
teacher working in Sheffield (though not a native) and am
particularly interested in Yorkshire dialect. I have a question
especially for people in Barnsley (but potentially for others too) -
is the vernacular as recorded in Kes used commonly in Barnsley today,
or has it declined (reflecting trends in other parts of the country)?
In other words can you still easily find accents as broad as those
David Bradley and the other boys exhibit and dialect words
('thee/tha' etc) peppered throughout conversation?

Simon
