On Saturday, June 10, 1922 Ethel had a third daughter, Frances Ethel Gumm, a boy would have been much preferred. However which way the little baby girl was loved but not entirely welcomed. Never crossed their minds that the inopportune child become Judy Garland.

She then on joined the sisters and travelled the country doing song and dance. Managed by her mother. First it was a family act her parents in the first act followed by the three Gumm sisters. Then it was just Ethel and the girls. On tour they came to Los Angeles and tried to get an act in the big movie studios. This time no success. Eventually they decided to move to the west coast, California where Frank bought a small movie theatre house and they settled in a town, Lancaster, not too far away from Los Angeles ... and Hollywood. 1927 . 1928 had the The Gumm Sisters in the Meglin Kiddies Review a famous production of child performances held in Los Angeles in the Loew's State Theatre. This was considered a big break. Ethel was grooming her daughters for the big time. Little Frances only six years old was already stealing the show from her sisters and started doing solo numbers. She was now billed as "Baby" Gumm. It was in this time 1934, that Frances "Baby" was given yet a new stage name as she was nearly 12 years old and needed something peppy and new, Judy and after the Garland sisters (the new name from the awful sounding Gumm sisters) became Judy Garland.
