LOS ANGELES (AP) - Johnny Carson, the "Tonight Show" TV host who
served America a smooth nightcap of celebrity banter, droll comedy
and heartland charm for 30 years, has died. He was 79. "Mr. Carson
passed away peacefully early Sunday morning," his nephew, Jeff
Sotzing, told The Associated Press. "He was surrounded by his family,
whose loss will be immeasurable. There will be no memorial service."
Sotzing would not give further details, including the time of death,
the location or the cause of death.
The boyish-looking Nebraska native with the disarming grin, who
survived every attempt to topple him from his late-night talk show
throne, was a star who managed never to distance himself from his
audience.
His wealth, the adoration of his guests - particularly the many young
comics whose careers he launched - the wry tales of multiple
divorces: Carson's air of modesty made it all serve to enhance his
bedtime intimacy with viewers.
"Heeeeere's Johnny ..." was the booming announcement from sidekick Ed
McMahon that ushered Carson out to the stage. Then the formula: the
topical monologue, the guests, the broadly played skits such
as "Carnac the Magnificent."
But audiences never tired of him; Carson went out on top when he
retired in May 1992.
His personal life could not match the perfection of his career.
Carson was married four times, divorced three. In 1991, one of his
three sons, 39-year-old Ricky, was killed in a car accident.
Nearly all of Carson's professional life was spent in television,
from his postwar start at Nebraska stations in the late 1940s to his
three decades with NBC's "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson."
Carson choose to let "Tonight" stand as his career zenith and his
finale, withdrawing into a quiet retirement that suited his private
nature and refusing involvement in other show business projects.
In 1993, he explained his absence from the limelight.
"I have an ego like anybody else," Carson told The Washington
Post, "but I don't need to be stoked by going before the public all
the time."
He was open to finding the right follow-up to "Tonight," he told
friends. But his longtime producer, Fred de Cordova, said Carson
didn't feel pressured - he could look back on his TV success and
say "I did it."
"And that makes sense. He is one of a kind, was one of a kind," de
Cordova said in 1995. "I don't think there's any reason for him to
try something different."
Carson was born in Corning, Iowa, and raised in nearby Norfolk. He
started his show business career at age 14 as the magician "The Great
Carsoni."
After World War II service in the Navy, he took a series of jobs in
local radio and TV in Nebraska before starting at KNXT-TV in Los
Angeles in 1950.
There he started a sketch comedy show, "Carson's Cellar," which ran
from 1951-53 and attracted attention from Hollywood. A staff writing
job for "The Red Skelton Show" followed.
The program provided Carson with a lucky break: when Skelton was
injured backstage, Carson took the comedian's place in front of the
cameras.
The appearance probably was Carson's first monologue in front of a
national audience, according to "The Complete Directory to Primetime
TV Stars."
Producers tried to find the right program for the up-and-coming
comic, trying him out as host of the quiz show "Earn Your Vacation"
(1954) and in the variety show "The Johnny Carson Show" (1955-56).
From 1957-62 he hosted the daytime game show "Who Do You Trust?" and,
in 1958, was joined for the first time by McMahon, his
durable "Tonight" buddy.
A few acting roles came Carson's way, including one on "Playhouse 90"
in 1957, and he did a pilot in 1960 for a prime-time series, "Johnny
Come Lately," that never made it onto a network schedule.
In 1958, Carson sat in for "Tonight Show" host Jack Paar. When Paar
left the show four years later, Carson was NBC's choice as his
replacement and took over on Oct. 2, 1962.
Audiences quickly grew fond of Carson's boyish grin and easy wit. He
even made headlines with such clever ploys as the 1969 on-show
marriage of singer Tiny Tim to Miss Vicki, which won the show its
biggest-ever ratings.
The wedding and other noteworthy moments from the show were collected
into a yearly "Tonight" anniversary special.
In 1972, "Tonight" moved from New York to Burbank. Growing respect
for Carson's consistency and staying power, along with four
consecutive Emmy Awards, came his way in the late 1970s.
His quickness and his ability to handle an audience were impressive.
When his jokes missed their target, the smooth Carson won over a
groaning studio audience with a clever look or sly, self-deprecating
remark.
Politics provided monologue fodder for him as skewered lawmakers of
every stripe, mirroring the mood of voters. His Watergate jabs at
President Nixon were seen as cementing Nixon's fall from office in
1976.
He dispatched would-be late-night competitors with equal aplomb.
Competing networks tried a variety of formats and hosts but never
managed to best "Tonight" and Carson.
There was the occasional battle with NBC: in 1967, for instance,
Carson walked out for several weeks until the network managed to lure
him back with a contract that reportedly gave him $1 million-plus
yearly.
In 1980, after more walkout threats, the show was scaled back from 90
minutes to an hour. Carson also eased his schedule by cutting back on
his work days; a number of substitute hosts filled in, including Joan
Rivers, David Brenner, Jerry Lewis and Jay Leno, Carson's eventual
successor.
In the '80s, Carson was reportedly the highest-paid performer in
television history with a $5 million "Tonight" show salary alone.
His Carson Productions created and sold pilots to NBC,
including "TV's Bloopers and Practical Jokes." Carson himself made
occasional cameo appearances on other TV series.
He also performed in Las Vegas and Atlantic City, N.J., and
repeatedly hosted the Academy Awards from 1979 on.
Carson's graceful exit from "Tonight" did not avoid a messy, bitter
battle to fill his job.
Leno and fellow comedian David Letterman's tug-of-war over the job
inspired a satirical 1996 HBO movie, "The Late Shift," based on the
Bill Carter book of the same name.
Leno took over as "Tonight" host on March 25, 1992, becoming the
fourth man to hold the job after founding host Steve Allen, Paar and
Carson (Letterman moved to a competitive late-night job at CBS).
Carson stayed out of the fray and, after leaving "Tonight," took on
the role of Malibu-based retiree with apparent ease. An avid tennis
fan, Carson was still playing a vigorous game in his 70s. He was seen
in the stands at professional matches including the U.S. Open and
Wimbledon.
He and his wife, Alexis, traveled and dined out frequently. The pair
met on the Malibu beach in the early 1980s; he was 61 when they
married in June 1987, she was in her 30s.
Carson's first wife was his childhood sweetheart, Jody, the mother of
his three sons. They married in 1949 and split in 1963.
He married Joanne Copeland Carson in 1963; divorce came in 1972. His
third marriage, to Joanna Holland Carson, took place in 1972. They
separated in 1982 and reached a divorce settlement in 1985.
On the occasion of Carson's 70th birthday in 1995, former "Tonight"
bandleader Doc Severinsen, who toured with musicians from the show,
said he was constantly reminded of Carson's enduring popularity.
"Every place we go people ask 'How is he? Where is he? What is he
doing? Tell him how much we miss him.' It doesn't surprise me,"
Severinsen said.
The brisk sale of videocassettes of the best of "The Tonight Show
Starring Johnny Carson," released in the early '90s, offered further
proof of his appeal.
In 1993, he was celebrated by the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors
for career achievement.
Ruth Warrick, one of ALL MY CHILDREN's original cast members as the
portrayer of Phoebe English Tyler Wallingford, died on January 15 in
her New York City home of complications from pneumonia. She was 88.
Born in St. Joseph, MO, Warrick got her start in professional
acting at NYC's Mercury Theater, headed by actor/director Orson
Welles, with whom she later would make her film debut in Citizen
Kane. After racking up 30 film roles, Warrick graced television in
1953 on GUIDING LIGHT, then on AS THE WORLD TURNS and PEYTON PLACE
(for which she received her first Emmy nomination). In 1970, she
joined AMC for its premiere, went on to earn a pair of Daytime Emmy
nods for her portrayal of Phoebe, and was honored last May with a
Lifetime Achievement Emmy. Her Broadway career included runs in Irene
(opposite Debbie Reynolds), Take Me Along (with Jackie Gleason) and
Pal Joey.
"Acting was Ruth's passion and her life," shares TV niece Julia
Barr (Brooke). "She was a real pip -- a grande dame and a consummate
professional. I will miss her very much."
Warrick is survived by three children, a grandson and six great-
grandchildren. A service for family and close friends will be held
Saturday, January 22, in Manhattan; a public memorial celebrating her
life and career will be announced at a later date. In lieu of
flowers, donations can be made to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS,
God's Love We Deliver, City Harvest, and/or Gilda's Club NYC.

I just returned from my trip to the AMC luncheon in NYC. I had a
great time. The only disappointment was not being able to meet
Jennifer. I knew that she could not be there this year so I guess I
will just have to try again for next year. I have met most of the
actors on this show except for a few of the veteran actors. I guess
I will have to just keep trying.
I want to thank Jennifer to sending me a signed photo. I greatly
appreciated it and will continue to try to meet her in person. I
have admired her as an actor for many years both on and off of AMC.

For all the Moms out there, HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!
This is for the mothers who have sat up all night with sick toddlers
in their arms, wiping up barf laced with Oscar Meyer wieners and
cherry Kool-Aid, saying "It's okay honey, Mommy's here."
Who have sat in rocking chairs for hours on end soothing crying
babies who can't be comforted.
This is for all the mothers who show up at work with spit-up in
their hair, milk stains on their blouses, and diapers in their purse.
For all the mothers who run carpools and make cookies and sew
Halloween costumes… and all the mothers who don't.
This is for the mothers who gave birth to babies they'll never see,
and the mothers who took those babies and gave them homes.
This is for the mothers whose priceless art collections are hanging
on their refrigerator doors.
And for all the mothers who froze their buns on metal bleachers at
football or soccer games instead of watching from the warmth of
their cars, so that when their kids asked, "Did you see me, Mom?"
they could say, "Of course, I wouldn't have missed it for the
world!" and mean it.
This is for all the mothers who yell at their kids in the grocery
store and swat them in despair when they stomp their feet and scream
for ice cream before dinner. And for all the mothers who count to
ten instead, realizing how child abuse happens.
This is for all the mothers who sat down with their children and
explained all about making babies. And for all the mothers who
wanted to, but just couldn't find the words.
This is for all the mothers who go hungry so their children can eat.
For all the mothers who read "Goodnight, Moon" twice a night for a
year. And then read it again, "Just one more time."
This is for all the mothers who taught their children to tie their
shoelaces before they started school. And for all the mothers who
opted for Velcro, instead.
This is for all the mothers who teach their sons to cook, and their
daughters to sink a jump shot.
This is for every mother whose head turns automatically when a
little voice calls "Mom?" in a crowd, even though they know their
own offspring are at home – or away at college.
This is for all the mothers who sent their kids to school with
stomach aches, assuring them they'd be just FINE once they got
there, only to get calls from the school nurse an hour later asking
them to please pick them up… right away.
This is for the mothers who children have gone astray, who can't
find the words to reach them.
For all the mothers who bite their lips until they bleed when their
14 year old dyes their hair green.
For all the mothers of the victims of recent school shootings, and
the mothers of those who did the shooting.
For the mothers of the survivors, and the mothers who sat in front
of their TV in horror, hugging their child who just came home from
school, safely.
This is for the mothers who taught their children to be peaceful,
and now pray they come home safely from war.
What makes a good Mother anyway?
Is it patience? Compassion? Broad hips?
The ability to nurse a baby, cook dinner, and sew a button on a
shirt, all at the same time?
Or is it in her heart.
Is it the ache you feel when you watch your son or daughter
disappear down the street, walking to school alone for the very
first time.
The jolt that takes you from sleep to dread, from bed to crib at 2
AM to put your hand on the back of a sleeping baby.
The panic, years later, that comes again at 2 AM when you just want
to hear their key in the door and know they are safe again in your
home.
Or the need to flee from wherever you are and hug your child when
you hear news of a fire, a car accident, a child dying?
The emotions of motherhood are universal, and so our thoughts are
for young mothers stumbling through diaper changes and sleep
deprivation…
And mature mothers learning to let go.
For working mothers and stay-at-home mothers
Single mothers and married mothers.
Mothers with money, mothers without.
This for all of you, for all of us.
Hang in there. In the end we can only do the best we can…
tell them every day that we love them… and pray.
Carol, the president of the All My Children Fan Club, has asked me
to pass the word that the luncheon in August is now SOLD OUT! There
are still tickets available to the One Life To Live Luncheon being
held on Saturday, August 21, 2004 in New York City.
For those of us going...I can't wait, we'll have so much fun.
Have a great weekend...Patti in MN

While I totally agree that Marian should be on contract, comparing
this situation to that on "Days of Our Lives" has me grateful that
my soaps have not stooped to the level of killing off their vets.
While we don't see Phoebe at all, we know she will probably pop in
at some point out of the blue, and we don't have to worry about all
of these characters being killed off. (A tasteless joke about
Marlena from "DOOL" popping over to ABC soaps has been circulating.
I was not amused.)
But I love Marion, I love Mary Smythe, I love Ruth Martin, I adore
Myrtle and Opal, and I adore the actors who play them. I thank God
every day watching SoapNet that we have Jennifer Bassey, Anna
Stuart, Eileen Herlie, Marj Dusay, Constance Towers, Jed Allan,
Louise Sorel, Jane Elliott, Leslie Charleson, Jeanne Cooper, Jess
Walton, Catherine Hickland, Ilene Kristen, John Ingle, and
other "over 40" actors working on soaps. They are scene stealers
and are a lot more worth watching than these twenty-something people
who need a few more acting lessons to be even palatable.

Jennifer rocked in a 1996 episode where Tad confronted Marian about
telling Dixie that he slept with Liza. Marian proceeded to tell Tad
that emotionally ripping the insides of a woman out and leaving her
a hollow shell was a rotten thing to do and Tad realized that Marian
was refering to herself, not Liza. It's scenes like that which make
soaps like theatre!
Have you heard that Super Soap Weekend (SSW) California 2004 (March

I AM ONE HAPPY FAN OF AMC, I AM GETTING BORED OF NOT KNOWING WHO THE
KILLER OF MICHAEL CAMBIAS IS, BUT THE STORY GOING AROUND IT IS
GREAT. I LOVE SIMONE, BUT HER AND TAD COME ON. I DID LOVE THE ACTING
THOUGH IT WAS WONDERFUL. THEN THE KISS BETWEEN BINKS AND MAGGIE OH
MY GOD I SCREAMED SO LOUD MY NEIGHBORS CAME TO SEE IF I WAS OK. I AM
SO HAPPY I HAVE BEEN WATCHING ALL MY CHILDREN FOR SO MANY YEARS AND
HAVE SEEN THE SHOW GO BACK TO THE WAY IT WAS BECAUSE OF THE OLD
WRITER BEING BACK.
I ALSO WANTED TO ADD ABOUT SSW AT DCA I AM A ANNAUAL PASS HOLDER AND
HAVE NOT HEARD ANYTHING ABOUT SSW HAPPENING IN MAY I EVEN CALLED
DISNEY AND THEY SAID THAT THE EVENT WAS POSTPONED.
AS I AM WRITING THIS SIMONE HAS SAID THAT SHE SHOT MICHAEL I DO NOT
THINK IT WAS HER.
I WONDER HOW MUCH MONEY HAS BEEN BET ON WHO DID IT.
LOVE TO ALL OF YOU THAT SENT ME CHRISTMAS CARDS....I WAS REAL SICK
IN THE HOSPITAL I ALMOST DIED BECAUSE MY KIDNEYS SHUT DOWN THANK GOD
WITH GOOD MEDS AND PRAYERS I WAS HEALED FOR THE MOST PART.
THANKS AGAIN,
BIG MAMA
I hate to be the barer of bad news but I just received word from
my friend who puts on the CA SSW that "SSW CA IS OFFICIALLY
POSTPONED. NO NEW DATES HAVE BEEN SET AS OF NOW."
He has promised to keep me posted as information becomes
available, so I will pass on anything he shares. Hopefully they will
reschedule this and not totally cancel the event.
If you haven't purchased your tickets to the AMC Fan Club
Luncheon, being held 8/22 in New York, do so soon, as they are
selling very quickly this year.
Everyone have a great weekend! Patti in MN

On Tuesday's episode, when Mary found the gun in Adam's study, it had
the initals "M.C." Of course everyone just assumes that would be
Michael Cambius, but wouldn't it be an interesting plot twist if
those initials stood for "Marion Chandler?" It would a great plot
twist and it would Jennifer a lot more airtime which she rightfully
deserves!
-Adam :)
I so agree with that Adam. I miss my Marion =)
