Have they done any other acting work? I thought they were both good. Do they
speak
Cantonese as well as they appeared to in the movie? I don't know too much about
them. Wang Lee Hom is an actor, besides being a pop star, so he was very good.
But
it's funny, you could tell he's American by the way he said "Okay" and "Hey." I
don't
know Cantonese, but I assume, since his parents are from Taiwan, and he does
most
of his performing there, his Cantonese must have been okay.
I agree the movie was cheesy in spots, particularly most of the English dialog.
Poor
Ishibashi-san, it took me several replays to figure out what he was saying. He
should
have just said it in Japanese. Gackt's English wasn't much better. But even the
native
speakers were dreadful. OTOH, I am a sucker for a vampire-yakuza movie. This was
like a cross between "The Vampire Lestat" and "Angels with Dirty Faces." Plot
holes
and all, I got involved in the story. It deserves a prequel.
The reason I call it violent is the number of people that get shot and killed in
it. I lost
count, way more than in "Samehada Otoko to Momojiri Onna" (Sharkskin Man and
Peach Hip Girl). Not knowing anything about the manga it's based on, I stayed
away
from renting "Samehada..." for a long time, but it was, again, a lot better than
I
expected. I think the reason I finally rented it is because Asano Tadanobu is in
it. But I
think it was worth seeing for Terajima Susumu (who's also in Moonchild) and
Kishibe
Ittoku.
I've seen Terajima-san in a lot of things, but never in a starring role. He's
very good,
not a typical leading man, but I'd love to see him be the lead in something. Has
he
ever?
Another actor from "Samehada..." I really dig is Kishibe Ittoku. He's been in a
bunch of
things, and he's never recognizable, except maybe for his voice. He really
disappears
inside his roles. Emoto Akira is like that too. They were both in "Onmyoji" and
I didn't
recognize either of them.
Also, am I imagining it or is the natural career path for pop/rock
singers/musicians in
Japan to become actors? It seems much more common than it is in English-speaking
countries. Here's a partial list I know of, feel free to add to it:
Gackt
HYDE
Hotei Tomoyasu
Kishibe Ittoku
Sawada Kenji
Ishibashi Ryo
Imai Eriko
Koizumi Kyoko
Asano Tadanobu
