The Buddhist Temple of Chicago (BTC) will have its new temple open house on
Sat., May
20, 2006 from 8 am to 6 pm, with mochi pounding and ozoni, hands-on
demonstrations
of traditional wood carving, anime, and movies from Japan, and information on
the
Japanese Pure Land Buddhist tradition. The temple is a modern structure but has
the
unique feature of a hexagonal hondo (chapel) that harkens back to the Rokkakudo
(six
sided temple) that Shinran Shonin, the founder of the Jodo Shinshu Buddhist
School
retreated to in his search for truth.
On Sun, May 21, we will have our dedication service starting at 10 am, with a
special
guest speaker, Dr. Nobuo Haneda of the Maida Center in Berkeley, California. Dr.
Haneda
was born in Tokyo but calls Chicago his second home, stemming from the many
years he
resided at BTC while in graduate school at the University of Chicago.
