Hi Jim

The painting I purchased at Doyle’s
was LOT 141 – “Street Scene” – do you remember it?
Unfortunately there is not a picture of it in the
brochure.

Yes, there were a number of really personal items
which both you and I and many other people who I spoke
to at the auction believed should have been retained
in the family. However, the people who latterly
looked after both Cagney and his wife (the Zimmermans)
appear to have gained the most (according to both
Cagney’s and his wife’s Wills which I have read and a
number of scathing magazine articles). They arranged the
auction and all proceeds were going to the Cagney
Foundation but of course the “Z” are the Foundation ! Indeed
one of the Cagney relatives contacted me following
the auction and advised that NONE of these proceeds
were going to his family and it would have been nice
if his children/grandchildren would have been
offered some token, however small, to remember him by.
Also whilst at the auction I heard via some reporters
that the “Oscar” did not sell because “Hollywood had
blackballed it” knowing that the “Z” were behind the Cagney
Foundation etc. Wonder what will happen to it now? It should
go to somewhere like the Smithsonian Museum so that
the public/fans can all view and appreciate
it.

Angela.
