It's great that Hong Kong stars such as Jet Li, Jackie Chan, and
Chow Yun Fat are getting to do movies in Hollywood, but they are so
limited in their roles. They always play a cop from China (Rush
Hour, Romeo Must Die, Cradle 2 the Grave, Kiss of the Dragon, etc)
or some ancient kung fu master (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,
Bulletproof Monk). They are limited by their lack of fluent English.
What about Asian American actors? Why don't they get a chance to
play roles that these Hong Kong actors cannot play?
I want to tell you guys about Better Luck Tomorrow. All the lead
actors are Asian American. The director, Justin Lin, is Asian
American. He tried to get this movie made for years, but movie
studios told him that they won't finance the movie unless the
characters be changed to non-Asian. There was no way to finance this
movie, but Justin Lin applied for 6 credit cards and was in 6 figure
debt. The actors in the movie agreed to NOT get paid for being in
the movie. As a result, even the actors got into debt.
But the movie did well in film festivals, and MTV bought the rights
to it. This movie comes out on April 11th in limited theaters like
CTHD. Only if it does well will it keep expanding like CTHD did.
This is a movie in which Asians can be real human beings. If the
movie does well, more movies like this will come out. Asian
Americans will get to play roles other than Chinese delivery boys
and other stereotypical roles. Support this movie. If not enough
people go see Better Luck Tomorrow, movie studios will tell Justin
Lin, "I told you so," and they will be even more reluctant to ever
finance a movie with Asian American leads playing 3-dimensional
roles.
Check the Better Luck Tomorrow website for when it plays in your
city.
