In December this HD Discussion group will be 10 years old.
Other groups have become bigger but this group was the first one on the web.
HD is now an over used word.

Mark Forman writes on Film and Digital Times http://fdtimes.com
As one of the first owners of the new Canon EOS 5D Mark II (the 21
megapixel SLR with H.264 1080P 60 capability) I can report that this
camera is groundbreaking.
I have shot a number of tests and did pickup shots for a Hollywood
feature only three days after receiving it on December 1.
As most people know, this is Canon's first iteration at integrating
video capabilities into a Digital Single Lens Reflex camera. I like
the autofocus which can be temporarily enabled before shooting by
pressing the AF-on button in the one shot mode. This function quickly
flips up the mirror when you hold the button down and pre-focusses an
autofocus lens. (There is also a continuous contrast detect autofocus
function which is very slow and not so good for motion.) You can use
fully manual lenses such as those from Zeiss.
For shooting in low light this device excels. I think it's 1.5 to 2
stops better in low light than any other camera. You can shoot at
night and get decent results with minimal light. No...you still must
light the scene. You just need maybe a stop or two less than before.
In one of my tests, I shot a night scene at 8th Ave and 16th Street in
Chelsea. The shot can be seen (be sure to select resolution from web
to Full HD in the Size Menu on top) at:
http://ceehere.com/gallery/6724257_QZahC#431137394_4ZVfH-A-LB
Two days into ownership I was using the 5D Mark II on a feature in
Brooklyn with an actor entering an apartment building. I was shooting
instead of testing! I did the shot using only practical street lights
and a small Rosco LightPads LED in an entryway. A couple of hours
later the Editor and I transferred the takes from the Camera's CF card
to my Mac and the transferred it again to a DVD-ROM for the project.
On my 30 inch Cinema Display the ungraded shots are quite good--we
will screen the shots on a big screen this week.
There are some things this camera cannot do. 24P is not enabled and
you can't control the iris or ASA easily.
My latest short film titled
"24 frames per day"
will be screening at the
SLAMDANCE FILM FESTIVAL
Treasure Mountain Inn
255 Main Street
Park City, Utah
on January 20th, 2008 at 2:30pm
and
January 23rd, 2008 at 4:30pm
24 frames per day was conceived by combining 24 photographs captured each day
over a
period of 9 months. Yes, that's what makes this baby! And it's the same
photograph each
day, or rather the same frame each day. A daily meditation by the filmmaker
photographing the front door of her "home" makes this a very personal and
political film
that raises important questions around immigration, cultural stereotypes, and
diasporic
identity.

When this forum was started by myself in 1999 there was only a very small group
of HD and
digital cinema pros and only one HD camera the Sony 700.
Now the predominant form of production is now cinematography done in HD or
better with
many camera and post choices.
We have come a long way and look forward to even more in the future.

Is DI a process for making film to HD digital transfers or is it used as
a pre-master for a film out to make theatrical release prints?
What is the current standard for making release prints for theatres -
DI or Positive intermediate film?
Thanks!
When I started this forum back in 1999 this was the only place to discuss HDTV
Production
on the web.
A lot has changed since then.
There are now small HD Cameras and Digital Cinema cameras up to 5K. When this
forum
started the was only the Sony 700 series HDCAM and no CineAlta (The 900 was
introduced
shortly thereafter), Viper, Red, Varicam, D20, Genesis, Silicon Imaging.
Screening Digital Cinema has become more prevelent and DI has become the norm.
DLP Cinema was just beginning

I got the bulletin on the Sony 24P camera the
other day as I plan to upgrade to that when available.
Sony says it is multiformat 24, 25, 30 progressive and

Will it be field switchable or will seperate cards be
required to make the change.? Ian Ellis

The Project
Full length feature film-though a low budget film but it's a 2 hrs

the same age-old set standards & norms. This is actually different.
We plan to shoot on HD & once the film is successfully complete, we
aim to blow it up on 35mm & eventually release it in multiplexes.
Script: Absolutely Complete & registered.(including lyrics)
Cast: No big stars but promising talents with years of stage acting

About us-a brief introduction
Darpan Theatre & Cine Arts (DTCA) - a Mumbai (India) Based team of
creative people inclined towards working positively for Stage &
Cinema. DTCA was founded by Mr. Sunil Prem Vyas – with a mission to
encourage new talents in stage/theatre & eventually building it into
sincere production house for quality stage & cinema. We had been in to
Play/Drama Productions since 9 years with more than 17 plays performed
all over India under our banner Darpan Theatre & Cine Arts. Now, we
are entering into Film Production with our two new ventures. (To start
1st with a low budget but genuinely a sincere & promising film).

Who are we looking for…?
Really sincere volunteer for our project.
(Read below whether you fit in our expectations)
Co-producer / Financer
 Who is genuinely willing to put in his hard earned money in the
gambling field of Film- making & believes in the fact that to gain
high achievements one needs guts to take risks.
 Who could prove to be a trust worthy partner with the clear
intentions of creating quality cinema & not just another investor
showing off that he is related to showbiz.
 Who should agree to the fact that in casting & other creative or
technical decisions, the priority remains that of directors & the rest
of the team should respect his decisions as he remains the captain of
the ship. Any kind of interference might ruin the relationship
or even the project. (Though, we are flexible enough to always welcome
good suggestions).
 Who has ample amount of patience. We are not making a TV show which
has to be shot in time restrictions. Quality film making is a complex
& time consuming job which needs extra patience especially if we are
trying to create quality work in low budgets. We believe in strong
pre-production & very well organized preparations with rehearsals.
This film has many special effects which might require thorough
technical knowledge & research. We might have to build – tailor made
Rigs etc. also.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------\
------------------------------
Why should you join this project?
1st For the Subject
Our subject is Unique, Unique & Unique. It has never been made in
Indian Cinema.
It would be an artistic journey through camera's eye. Being a part of
such film could be an extra advantage to your profile & could prove to
be a pride to talk about.
2nd You are not the only risk taker
Profit & returns of your investments becomes our responsibility once
you believe in us. We wish to sustain in this industry with our skills
& creativity but certainly not at the cost of your money alone. That
is why we remain the 1st investor for our passion to accomplish in to
a sincere, meaningful but commercial viable project.
3rd For the great scope
Yes! Commercially viable!
We are not doing any aim less experiment with our money, time & hard work.
We want to make another film after this. Today, the complete scenario
is changing in film industry with new subjects/new cast/new team being
made & getting box office success. Whom so ever we have narrated the
script, we are inspired by their positive encouragement to make this
film cause it has great scope for returns (especially Overseas &
multiplexes). Also it might set new trends in Indian cinema ( at least
in script & treatment levels). You can judge it yourself when you hear
the subject & if required detailed shot divisions & their takings. Yes
it's already done on paper from every action to cut.
4th You do not need to invest your time
We understand that time is money. If you are not a full timer in film
productions then you do not need to worry about your time management
out of your busy work schedules cause we very well know this job. Film
making is not only our profession but our passion. We enjoy investing
our life in all the aspects of film making from story idea till
screening of the film & fortunately we have a small but passionate
team to accomplish that. (though small & expanding but a well-planned
& disciplined team environment is our stronge points & key to low
budget film making)
Investments & Returns
o The returns would be transparently on profit sharing of the investments.
o Legal documents would be signed.
o Detailed budget break-up & expenditure etc would be provided for
your reference.
The last words
We would make this film even if we do not get partners/financers. Only
thing is the project would take some more time to get complete. We are
ready for both. If the above information generates interest in you
then you are welcome to join hands with us.
We are on hunt & we will be finalizing our team as soon as possible.

Who are we looking for…?
Creative volunteers for our project from respective fields. Young
aspirant are welcome.
(Read below whether you fit in our expectations)
Cinematographer
 Who has done at least one project as DOP
(let it be your own show reel kind of 5 min short film, but only
independent DOPs)
 Must have thorough knowledge of HD-DV cams. Require fast reflexes as
well as skilled hand on working with such light weight cams & their
accessories. (if not then should be open to practicing & learning
skills, detailed sessions for the same could be organized for this
project if you are talented.)
 Should be willing to work even in a team of as minimum as of 10
people behind the camera (though small but a well-planned &
disciplined team environment is our responsibility & key to low budget
film making).
 Who is passionate to work hard for R & D about the technical aspects
of the film
(as this film has many special effects which might require thorough
technical knowledge & research).
 Who is willing to put in time & efforts working on the project as
Independent Film Makers. We believe in strong pre-production & very
well organized preparations with rehearsals. We might have to build –
tailor made Rigs, Light stands & reflectors etc. also.
 Preference will be given to the person who is expertise in indoor
lighting. (multi-talented i.e. Cinematographer as well as lights
designer would be more aspiring, keeping in mind the team has to be
smallest possible).
 We prefer Mumbai based volunteer but outstation talents are also
welcome in case you could arrange for your accommodation yourself.
2nd For the great scope to show your cinematic skills
Whom so ever we have narrated the script the suggestion is to take a
really sensible & talented cinematographer cause the subject requires
ample amount of creativity for mood lightings & enough skills to
handle light weight HDcam with tailor made rigs. No doubt this film
would be a unique portrait painted with lights. It would definitely be
challenging & rewarding for any cinematographer. You can judge it
yourself when you hear the subject, detailed shot divisions & their
takings. Yes it's already done on paper from every action to cut.
(Though creative ideas are always welcome)
3rd For Yourself (even you wish to add to your cart - DOP of so & so
feature film)
with due respect to your prior experiences & works, this project would
give you a new learning experience & ample opportunities to experiment
with your talent.
Payments
No payment now !........but once the project is a success & gains
profits, the services will be suitably rewarded. Your conveyance &
food on the locations will be taken care of. Any other expenses on
technical tailor made equipments or any other film related expenses
will be borne by us.
With this film we offer you to earn another platform to showcase your
creative talent. We give you all the motivation & pressure you can
stand & a lot of resource information.
We are on hunt & we will be finalizing our team as soon as possible.
If you feel you could be a part of our team then mail us your brief

Hi, my name is Quentin , I am Post Prod. supervisor in Rome for theatrical 35 mm
and tv
movies (www.deangelisgroup.com). I will come during the winter Music Festival in
Miami and
would be greatful to anybody who could invite me in a Post Prod facility and
even better
during a shooting in order to check out the latest technical and organisation
matters. I have
supervised in Rome "Julius Caesar" for Us releas onto HD D5, but I would really
need to talk
with someone who know how to set properly all the job.
Even a dinner together would be enough for me, just to ask some questions!
thanks in advance
Quentin
