Well, I finally got to see "The Bridge of San Luis Rey", after a
couple of years. It was released on DVD on Oct. 11, and I bought it
that day. I expected it not to be too great, and was pleasently
surprised. It really is pretty damn good, actually. I enjoyed it very
much, once it got going. Keitel gives a very good, touching
performance. Kathy Bates is good, also. De Niro hasn't much to do, but
he's still there a lot and makes the most of it. De Niro and Keitel
have two brief scenes together. It also has gorgeous cinematography,
too, and one hell of a good music score. Overall, I was pretty
satisfied with it. (I've watched it twice already.)Without giving too
much away, my two favorite scenes are when Keitel directs and coaches a
pair of secret young lovers through an acting scene on a stage. His
monologue, beautifully read by him, is pure poetry. Also, the scene
where he gets his heart broken by someone he'd long loved from afar
will remind you why we were fans of Keitel the actor in the first
place. It requires patience, and your utmost attention, but it is truly
beautiful.
Also, exciting news is that Keitel's other new indie, "Shadows in the
Sun" (AKA "The Shadow Dancer"), will premiere direct to cable, on ABC
Family network, on November 13, at 7pm EST. . Word is it will be
released on DVD a few weeks later. Can't wait!!!
