ITALY: DIRECTOR CHOOSES TURKEY FOR MOVIE ON TERRORISM
(ANSAmed) - GOREME (TURKEY), JULY 27 - As terrorism is making
headlines across the world, Italian director Renzo Martinelli is
shooting a movie about a disguised Turkish terrorist starring Harvey
Keitel, in the heart of Turkey - Cappadocia. The film, called The
Gem Merchant, is about an Italian-born Christian who converted to
Islam and disguises himself as gem merchant. Instead, he is a
terrorist and is looking for a suicide bomber to carry out a bloody
mission for him unawares. The film, scripted by Martinelli and Fabio
Campus, is based on newspaper stories and intelligence documents.
The plot also includes a love story born amid the suggestive and
barren landscape of Cappadocia, amid dervish dances, sufi philosophy
and houses dug in the tuff and called the fairies' hearths because
of their conical shape. "This film wants to make viewers think about
an issue that is already part of everybody's life", Martinelli said,
adding he wrote a script a year and a half ago but could not make
the film because the Madrid and London attacks took place in the
meantime. "With this movie I want to wake up Europe from its apathy
towards the Muslim world. The Muslim world of course is very
variegated. There exists a moderate majority which has nothing to do
with the Jihad, but what I am convinced of is that if Europe wants
to safeguard its principles of democracy, it would be completely
helpless against terrorism", Martinelli added. The gem merchant's
name is Ludovico Vicedomini. He is an Italian living in Turin,
northern Italy, and Afghanistan. He falls in love with the woman he
chooses to be his 'dove', meaning a bomber unaware that she is
carrying a bomb. Leda, played by British actress Jane March, is an
apparently fragile woman, married to a terrorism history professor
(Jordi Molla) who is teaching at La Sapienza University in Rome. He
lost both his legs in the attack at the US Embassy in Nairobi,
Kenya. While in Turkey, the professor's wife falls in love with the
merchant who is an educated, fascinating and rich man. Her love
makes Leda leave her disabled husband and convert herself to Islam.
The film has a budget of eight million euro and is expected to be
ready in a year. It is co-produced by Medusa, Martinelli Film
Company and British firm Creative Partners and will be distributed
by Medusa. The set will move from Turkey to Turin on Friday.
