*** ICE PRINCESS (G, 1:32)
Michelle Trachtenberg stars is a bright science student whose class
project involves analyzing the moves of figure skaters on computers to
discover the physics of what they do. Hayden Panettiere is the
potential skating champion with an obsessed mother (Kim Cattrall), and
Joan Cusack plays the brainiac’s mother, equally obsessed with her
daughter going to Harvard. The movie shows the two girls becoming
friends and helping each other do what they really dream of. Begins as
a formula teenage sports movie, and takes it to the next level;
surprisingly entertaining.

*** 1/2 ROBOTS (PG, for some brief language and suggestive humor; 1:31)
Slapstick comedy in a futurist world inhabited by robots, as the plucky
Rodney Copperbottom (voice by Ewan McGregor) teams with Fender (Robin
Williams) and Cappy (Halle Berry) to outwit the evil Phineas T. Ratchet
(Greg Kinnear) and pitch his brilliant ideas to the Big Weld himself
(Mel Brooks). Directed by Chris Wedge and Carlos Saldanha, who worked
together on “Ice Age” (2002), and here achieve a surprisingly
beautiful, harmonious art design, with colors all borrowed from 1940s
Fiestaware.

*** THE SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING PANTS (PG, for themes, some
sensuality and language; 1:59)
The same pair of jeans is magically a perfect fit for four good friends
as they begin the summer before their senior year. They agree to take
them along on their adventures, and then forward them to the next on
the list, observing all the while rules and regulations involving the
jeans and themselves. Glowing performances by America Ferrera of “Real
Women Have Curves,” Alexis Bledel of “Sin City,” newcomer Blake Lively
and Amber Tamblyn of “Joan of Arcadia.” A big-hearted movie where a
group of gifted actresses find opportunities most younger movie stars
can only dream about.
