Thanks to Shelby from the Pota group for this: you can pre-order the
DVD at Digital Eyes for only $34.99 -- less than at Amazon. Now that
it's popping up it won't hurt to shop around for the best

Hey guys, was wandering around various DVD/video sites tonight and to
my utter astonishment found the PotA - Complete Tv Series DVD is now
on pre-order at Amazon.com for $37.48! Here's the direct link:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005PJ8W/qid=1000072107/sr=1-
3/ref=sc_d_3/107-4760348-3051748

If that doesn't work go the News page on my site:

http://www.netcomuk.co.uk/~pdownes/potatv/potatv_news.html

Just a warning, it's a Region 1 DVD so if you're outside the US or
Canada you'll need a multi-region DVD player to view it.

Happy pre-ordering! /Mez

Ah, the kids today don't know any better, Dan, that's all. Back in
our day going to the cinema was a treat, remember? (Hang on, my
oxygen bottle's slipping....!!)

I don't know why I didn't find PotA as deplorable as I should have.
It certainly isn't a terrific film by any stretch of the imagination,
and that's before applying my love of the Apes to it. The soundtrack
is kickin' tho...I've got it on order from Amazon in the States!

As for the Tv Series DVD, my sense of things is that the lines of
communication aren't what they could be at FOX. For instance, I'd
love to know who this Tanisha person got the spiel about writing in
from, along with the address to send letters. Maybe the janitor told
her?! Clearly something is amiss there. It's no wonder they're
responsible for the hodge-podge of PotA 2001!!

I await your findings on the Apes Chronicles articles. And to update
you on the copy job, I don't have room to tell you what we've been
through with our dear little Xerox since it broke down. It's 'nearly'
fixed; I've had to do it myself. Just need to get my hands on some
5309 developer now. Don't suppose you're a Xerox distributor? ;) /Mez

Mez,

I thought your review was pretty much spot on but I think you may
have got more out of it than I did. I was also dissapointed with all
the empty spaces in my local theatre, you would think that a film of
this stature (supposedly) on the opening night would receive a little
more interest. What's wrong with kid's today, I don't know!

I see on the main group the subject of the will they/won't they tv
show dvd's has reared it's ugly head again, with it looking like Fox
now changing their mind. You seem to be able to get just about every
tv show since the dawn of time either on video or dvd these days,
what is it those guys have against the tv series! Thank goodness for
Mr Whitty I say.

Thanks for the 'Apes Chronicles' link, I'm rooting through my
collection as we speak.

Yeah, me too, tho I did a teensy bit of peeking. Just posted my
reaction on the PotA group. What did you think?

BTW, did you notice that the UK trailers have Thade saying "Get me

because it didn't work in the final edit, but disappointing. My
husband's been growling that line all week.

Indeed! You never know what they might find in the vaults. Could even
be a few greying extras huddling in there. :)

I'm seeing it tonight as well Mez, I have to admit I'm not as excited
as I thought I would be when I first heard a remake was going ahead a
few years ago. I think it's all the bed press that has filtered

Let's hope that if anything it creates an interest in the TV series,
and ultimately creates a DVD with some nice extras that we can be
proud of. I don't suppose they will be able to find a 'lost'
interview with Mark Lenard to put on it, ah well we can but dream!

By the way, I have a quite a few Ape Chronicles but don't ever recall
a write up on unfilmed tv series scripts, let me know the issue
number if you come across it.

Enjoy (I hope) the movie.

A senior VP at FOX Home Entertainment USA has confirmed that the PotA
Tv Series will be released on DVD soon!

Like the new film or not (it just opened in the UK and I'm reserving
judgement till I see it tonight), we DO have Tim Burton to thank for
this as I don't think FOX would have moved on releasing the Tv Series
at all without the renewed interest in the Apes. /Mez

Hey Ursula, I used to read Epilog! Does the article say which episode
was Serling's? 'Fallen God' has the classic RS hallmarks -- apes
wearing 20th century style human clothing and living in what by
description seem to be human-style homes...minus the luxuries, of
course. And the key element in the script is a radio transmitter a
chimpanzee farmer dug up in his field which he and his family have
placed on an altar and pray to, not knowing what it is.

I think Apes Chronicles, a fanzine in Canada, did a major write-up on
the unfilmed scripts some time ago. Will double-check my info and get
back here on it. /Mez

Hi Dan, hi Mez,

re. unaired scripts, there is a lengthy article on the series and the
movies in EPI-LOG Journal no. 9, where they mention these scripts.
They were written before they had decided on the final look of the
show, one of them was written by Rod Serling, no less (of Twilight
Zone fame)! EPI-LOG magazine is available on Ebay (sometimes spelled
EPILOG), and this Journal no. 9 is worth every penny!

Hope this helps.

Wow Mez!

You have managed to get hold of unfilmed scripts, how did you manage
that?

I guess it would be too long and time consuming to post them on this
group or on your tv series homepage, geez I'd sure love to read those.

Is Urko featured in either of them? Can you give a synopsis of the
stories, and any interesting situations between our heroes and other
characters? Sorry too many questions methinks!

I think there's an attempt made to shoot eps in airdate order, but
thing don't always end up that way. For example, some episodes in
seasons 4, 5 and 6 of The X-Files were shown out of production order.
And if I remember correctly, Jeff K. said PotA was canceled while
they were shooting either 'Up Above' or 'The Liberator'.

> I also thought that a tv series is filmed in it's entirety before

Did you know the word 'series' means something different here in the
UK than it does in the States? Here you guys use 'series' to refer to
what Americans call a 'season'. In the US, 'series' refers to the
entire show, however many 'seasons' it runs.

Anyway, no, it isn't standard practice in the US to film an entire
season before it airs. They get a few weeks jump on things, tho.
Shooting usually begins in August, with the season opener airing in
September or October. Barring cancellation, shooting wraps sometime
in Spring (the length of a season can vary by a few eps for various
reasons). The cast and crew are already on hiatus when the season
finale airs.

You know it! What I find interesting is that there are 'unfilmed'
scripts floating around for PotA which appear to be early discards.
Like I just got my hands on copies of 'Fallen God' and 'The Hostage',
the latter being dated FINAL on April 5, 1974. (There's no date
on 'Fallen God'.) Both are inconsistent in several ways with the
series we're familiar with, including the use of a character named
Kovac rather than Burke. So where then are the scripts that were
intended to fill the remainder of the season before it was
unceremoniously canceled? I'd love to know. They must be around
somewhere in some form. /Mez

Hi Ursula, Hi Mez,

I always believed that the episodes were filmed in exact order on a
weekly basis but I could be wrong. I read somewhere that 24 episodes
were planned before the axe fell after the 14th, if this is the case
then they must have began airing the first episodes on tv while they
were still filming the later ones. I also thought that a tv series is
filmed in it's entirety before being aired on tv, but again I could
well be wrong.

If only they had pressed ahead and finished all 24 episodes despite
the disappointing ratings, then just think of all the extra episodes
we would be able to pour over today. Life just ain't fair out there
in tv land!

Hey Ursula,

I'd never considered that the episodes might have been shot out of
order till you mentioned it, but it would explain the discrepancies
you mentioned. The dates of the scripts are no help -- those I've
seen are dated before filming even began that September. I might be
able to check on this through an acquaintance on the PotA Board, tho.

I always wondered HOW Virdon and Burke were supposed to have managed
to cut their hair at all, not to mention shave every day. I mean,
those aren't things one would have time to pay particular attention
to as a fugitive. Harrison Ford certainly didn't in the movie of the
same name!!

Hi,

I recently started watching old tapes of the show with my husband and
we think that the order of episodes as shown was probably not the
same as they were shot. For example, they had just been to San
Francisco in "The Trap" and then again in "The Legacy" (my fave
episode, by the way, since my fave character is "Alan Virdon"...)
they were so amazed to find another "city" (quote: "I didnīt remember
what a city looks like." The astronauts also have varying lengths of
hair (Burke has straight hair in one ep and slightly longer
and "curly" hair in the next, while Virdon also looked different from
one ep to another. I donīt really mind though since I like watching
the show and most of the eps are pretty good. ("The Cure" is another
fave of mine.)

Well, this is just my "two cents worth"...

So was I, but I didn't do it either. Let's face it, with only 14 eps
it's easy to burn out on them! (Bite my tongue)

Yeah, and I was surprised to hear that Kim Hunter and Booth Colman
don't comprehend Ape fandom. I suppose it's just down to personal
taste. Roddy and Mark Lenard both appeared in other sci-fi/fantasy
kind of roles, which I don't think the others did, so maybe they just
had a natural affinity for the Apes?

Don't know how Lenard felt about the makeup, but what's interesting
about Roddy is that although he professed to have loved playing
Galen, I read on Adamo's site that he just couldn't wait to get those
claustrophobic appliances off. Apparently the makeup crew had to rush
him at the end of each day's shoot to keep him from literally clawing
the stuff off his face!

BTW, you've probably seen the post about Mark Lenard already (sadly,
he died in '96 of bone marrow cancer) and perhaps realised you have
seen him as Spock's dad, but here's a link to a photo of him as a
Romulan. It's pre-PotA by several years, but the Urko look is there
in the eyes....

I was so thrilled when I received my videos from Michael that I was
tempted to go for overkill and watch them all in one go ! Thankfully
common sense prevailed and I am limiting myself to thrice weekly
viewings, in the correct order that the episodes were aired. Having
not seen them since the Seventies (I don't have cable so have missed
any re-runs on the Sci-Fi Channel) it is proving an unbelievably
enjoyable experience.

I was interested to read on the main discussion group from I think Mr
Krueger of his visit to a recent convention, he mentions that Harper,
Naughton and Coleman did not seem to look back on the series with
much fondness whereby McDowall and Lenard are/were very proud of the
series. I can believe that as it shows in their performances on the
series, I cannot agree more when you say Mark Lenard was flawless, to
me he seemed to pour such enthusiasm into the role (I think he would
have made a better Ursus than Gregory). I've not ever seem a photo of
Mark behind the make up, I don't think I saw one on your site Mez
does such a photo exist ?

Amazingly, no! I expected to see at least one ad for the film, but
all the hype was about the release of Disney's Atlantis movie and
Angelina Jolie in 'Tomb Raider'. Very strange considering there's
only just over a month away....

Oh, the interaction between them is CLASSIC. Poor Pete is trying so
hard to prove his point about humans that he totally misreads Urko.
You can see him getting more and more wound up as Pete goes on about
how smart humans once were, it's hysterical! Of course, Mark Lenard
was flawless in everything he did.

One of the scenes I like best is from 'The Tyrant', when Galen (who's
my favorite) goes to Urko in disguise to warn him about Aboro's plot
to kill him. You would think that Galen putting himself in jeopardy
that way would mean something, but Urko is such a hardhead! I wonder
if Galen would be so willing to save Urko's life again after that
experience.

Are you still enjoying your videos? ;) /Mez
