under 30 years of age in February 2009. Please click here to read the
participation conditions for the Talent Press.
APPLICATION GUIDE
The application process does not require you to send us any certified
or official documents. It does, however, take a bit of time. We
recommend you begin the application early and prepare your sample of
work with enough time to allow for things to be uploaded or, if
applicable, sent by post. On average, the application may take up to an
hour to complete.
Step 1)
Register for your log-in number and create a password.
With the log-in number you may access your application online through
the Berlinale Talent Campus website at any time and complete all
sections of the application until the deadline, October 8, 2008. FAQ
Note : You must select one field of work. This should be the
field in which you work primarily or in which you have the most
experience. The decision of the selection commitee will be based on how
you represent yourself in this field. This will also influence your
access to hands-on training if you wish to apply for any of those
programmes. It will not, however, influence your ability to visit a
wide range of programme events during the Campus.
Step 2)
Your log-in number and password will be sent to the
email address you have provided. Log in to the application via our
website, www.berlinale-talentcampus.de, and fill out the form by
providing all required information such as your contact details, a
filmography, and a short statement of motivation. Please upload a clear
picture of yourself. Your application must be completed by yourself and
in English. We do not accept team applications. You must finish the entire form
by the October 8, 2008 Deadline in order for your application to be considered.
Step 3)
Depending on the field of work you have chosen, you
will be asked to submit a sample of work. A sample of work shows a
past, present or collection of project(s) you are involved in. It
should represent your strengths and style in your selected field of
work. For more information about what a sample may be, see our FAQ.
Please pay attention to the technical specifications provided in the
application form. You should upload your sample directly to the online
application form, or if you are submitting a sample on VHS, DVCAM or
miniDV because you can not upload, you should mail your sample to the
address below (also provided in the application form). Your sample must be
uploaded or arrive BY the October 8, 2008 Deadline. This is not a postmark date.
Note: The sample of work you submit must correspond to the field of work you
have chosen. You may only send one sample of work. Detailed information about
the content and technical specifications of your sample is available in the
application form directly once you proceed.
Step 4a)
OPTIONAL: There are further opportunities to participate in more intensive
hands-on training. These programmes are:
Garage Studio,
Volkswagen Score Competition,
Script Station,
Doc Station
and
Talent Project Market.
Due to limited space, you must complete an additional form to apply for
these programmes, and you may only apply to a programme that
corresponds to your chosen field of work.
Step 5)
Ensure that your application and your hands-on training application (if
applicable) are complete, with sample of work, by the October 8, 2008 Deadline.
You will not receive a confirmation, however you can log in anytime to
check whether all sections of your application are complete.
Participants will be selected at the sole discretion of the Berlinale
Talent Campus. Applicants selected for participation will be informed
via email no later than January 15, 2009. You can log in at any
time after the application phase to observe your selection status.
There is no legal claim to participate in the Berlinale Talent Campus.
Applicants for the Talent Press, please continue here

FROM PHILIPPINE STAR - Peque Gallaga: The director as raconteur
By Bibsy M. Carballo
Saturday, August 9, 2008
Whenever the name of Peque Gallaga is mentioned, the various
reactions one gets could either be of awe, intimidation, dismissal,
or unmitigated worship. Although he has followed a number of career
paths (teacher, director for commercials, actor, director for
television, production designer, director for movies, director for
theater, screenwriter) Peque seems to be best known as a director and
a teacher.
His interviews are almost like a storytelling session cum lecture
where one is given the forward, the background of the subject at
hand, and examples to stress his point, punctuated by colorful
cusswords. No wonder his workshops are often the talk of the town,
and students flock to them especially those in Bacolod where he
grudgingly admits he heads a sort of Negrense mafia or what he calls
the "cultural sacadas."
He has been teaching for more than 30 years, in schools, in non-
classroom setups, holding workshops from Cagayan de Oro, Panay and
all the way to Batangas, recently in Baguio with students from Abra
to the Cordilleras. He declares he loves the interaction, the sense
of community and continuity.
The director looms large (literally and otherwise) on the horizon of
Philippine cinema once a pioneer in Asia and today lingering on a
deathbed. In many ways, Peque must feel it is actually the fault of
those in the industry, born out of laziness and greediness. He
acknowledges industry people have gotten old, don't have their pulse
on the audience. "Many of our producers haven't taken the LRT, are
hardly aware of YouTube, the blogging phenomenon or know how to
handle the videos in their cellphones. So they continue propping up
the old creaking formulas with more of the same stuff that hasn't
worked in decades. If that isn't insanity, I don't know what is."
We wonder if he has given up on the movies. "Yes, I've given up on
Industry movies. But to be fair, the Industry has given up on me as
well."
In a published interview regarding why he did his last film Pinoy
Blonde, Peque reveals it was really out of frustration with the way
his colleagues present the Philippines in clichés — the poor peasants
eating kamote, the farmers in camisa chino, Pinoy children talking in
singsong patterns reminiscent of Shirley Temple, and worst of all "
If you check out most of what is considered good acting by our most
prestigious award-giving bodies, you will see a direct line between
the acting of Vivian Leigh and Leslie Howard in Gone with the Wind as
filtered through Lino Brocka, and it continues to this very moment.
All these serious, solemn scenes between two people both gazing at
the horizon and staying firmly within the frame."
We ask him if he thinks he has a better picture than Oro, Plata, Mata
(his second directorial assignment after Binhi co-directed with Butch
Perez) and he answers,
"I think Virgin Forest, Unfaithful Wife, Scorpio Nights, Magic Temple
and Kingdom, Isang Taon Walang Diyos (Wakwak), Tiyanak, Gangland and
Pinoy Blonde are a lot better than Oro. A lot of the sequences from
Shake, Rattle & Roll are better constructed and directed."
Considering the complexity, ambition and limitations in the shooting
of Oro, he will concede it was a pretty great job but adds it is not
a complete picture, "There's about one hour and a half of story
that's missing in there. There's stuff there that doesn't make sense
or, if it does, it doesn't receive the concentration and focus it
deserved. I'd give my right arm for a chance to do a director's cut
on that."
He is now making an appearance in the indie film Hubad, which will be
screened again on Aug. 15, 6 p.m. at the CCP Dream Theatre. Here, he
plays the director of a play where the actors (Irma Adlawan and Nonie
Buencamino) must deal honestly with their growing sexual attraction
to one another and with the artistic problems of an actor both with
honesty. Asked why he accepted the acting assignment which meant he
would commute between Manila and Bacolod he replies he found the
project intelligent and ambitious and welcomes the opportunity to
give up artistic control of a project and put himself totally in the
hands of someone else.
He has done less than a dozen acting roles and confesses to knowing
his limitations stating that, "I make sure that whoever is offering
me a role knows exactly what he's getting from me. So I warn them
that I have absolutely no brains for memorizing — it all went the way
of my virginity during the psychedelic years — I can't memorize
Tagalog, Ilonggo or English if my life depended on it….I ask them not
to give me kilometric lines and, short of directing my scene, beg
them to cover my scene with as many shots as possible so I can
memorize and deliver my dialogue line by line."
We visited the Hubad set and true enough found idiot sheets
everywhere for Peque.
"I'm proud to have done bits and extra appearances from Mario O'Hara
to Maryo J; from Marilou to Laurice and the only bastards who totally
ignored me and shot me totally tuhog were Mario O'Hara and Denisa and
Mark. I remember having to memorize this huge speech in Majayjay for
a whole week because I had a feeling that Mario would double-cross me
and tuhog that speech which he ended up doing. He did the same thing
to me in some telemovie on San Lorenzo Ruiz and I remember hiding my
cue cards behind religious statues and props. When I did the
refectory scene in Rizal for Marilou, my cue card was right under the
ham that I was eating."
Denisa and her co-director Mark Gary are ecstatic over Peque's
acceptance of the role. Not only was he most cooperative in terms of
fee, assistance in promoting the films, moral and artistic support,
his presence in the picture has undeniably given it a bigness it
deserves.
The best thing about Peque Gallaga is that he shuts his mouth off,
doesn't mince any words, and gives opinions with all those added
invectives that a more showbiz type of individual would be careful of
uttering. He gives kilometric answers to a one line query which we
absolutely enjoy since it provides one with a peek into the man's
personality, not to mention making the interviewer's job so much
easier. This, plus his talent as raconteur.
When we ask him to comment on film adaptations from other literary
forms, he articulates in his usual amusing classroom lecture manner —
"All movies proceed from a cinematic idea and principle — you really
have to write it from scratch. The storytelling in cinema is
completely antithetical to the storytelling on stage or in a book.
This is basically my fight with a lot of movies here — they're really
not very cinematic. I know many people feel that I'm blasphemous when
I consider (Lino) Brocka a better dramatist than filmmaker."
Not that Peque is unaware of people's reactions to his candid
opinions, and we have a feeling that he has lately tried to edit
himself but then too much editing would rob him of that roughish
charm. People seem to enjoy subjecting him to questions like
comparisons between Ishmael Bernal and Brocka. Although he has worked
with them both, respects them both, he has always answered that he is
solidly in Bernie's corner.
In an interview he once said that Brocka represented the heart, and
Bernie the mind. "When we waited for an hour on a Bernie set, it was
because he was trying to solve an artistic problem. On the other
hand, when we waited for hours on a Lino set, it was because he was
out there somewhere fighting with the producers on some social
inequality problem or marketing."
We ask about his last picture three years ago Pinoy Blonde which was
a digital movie that spoofed everyone but didn't seem to get its
message across. Perhaps then it was ahead of its time, we suggest?
"I have absolutely no idea. I thought I was sharing everything I
loved about movies to people who shared the same love of movies. It
was really a lark, doing things that major studios would never dare
do with a set of the most gifted actors you could find in the
Philippines and I got a lot of hostility instead. I was attacked for
being pretentious. (???!!!) A lot of reviews claimed I was actually
simply copying Tarantino when I was spoofing Kill Bill and stuff like
that. If I wasn't so old and grizzled, it would have broken my heart.
"I hate to insult my detractors, but I'm really coming to the
conclusion that a lot of people who love movies don't really
understand movies. I don't think it's a coincidence that the
extremely scanty feedback I get raving over Pinoy Blonde are from
extremely intelligent people. Oops, I just ruffled a few feathers
again!"
We prove, "If you had all the money in the world, wha would be the
movie you would choose to produce and direct?"
"I'm sorry… you're talking to a glutton, " he quickly replies. "If I
had all the money in the world, I would produce and direct:
A) Olympia — a period epic of love and war
B) Boy D — an exploration of impersonal cellphone teenage sex with a
boy who thinks he's a vampire.
C) Agaton And Mindy — top secret
D) Epic film based on the book Ordeal in Samar — the Balanggiga
Massacre

INQUIRER EXCLUSIVE: TV5 `still a Filipino station'
By Marinel Cruz
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 20:09:00 08/07/2008
MANILA, Philippines—Despite the infusion of capital by a Malaysian
corporation, ABC 5 — now called TV5 — remains a Filipino TV station,
according to new network boss Christopher Sy.
ABC 5 chief operating officer Antonio "Tonyboy" Cojuangco recently
entered into a long-term block airtime agreement with MPB Primedia
Inc., a local subsidiary of the Malaysian conglomerate Media Prima
Berhad.
The block airtime agreement meant that Primedia bought "all available
airtime" from ABC 5, a network insider explained.
Under Primedia, TV5 aims to air "innovative, relevant and spirited"
programs, according to Sy, Primedia's CEO.
"This is a local TV station and should be locally run," Sy
declared. "The Malaysians have left all the decision-making to the
team, which is entirely local. TV5 has nothing Malaysian about it."
Sy added that with the channel's new programming came the need for
the network to change its brand name. The network had been known as
Associated Broadcasting Company (ABC) 5 since 1992.
"The re-branding was necessary to more effectively communicate these
changes to the public," Sy said. "We're going to be very different
from the old ABC 5. The new name, new look and new logo were very
deliberate."
The young network boss gave Inquirer Entertainment an interview last
week, answering questions on TV5's block-timing contract and target
market, and its spanking new 120kw transmitter.
What is the duration of the block-timing contract with ABC 5?
We don't want to get into the details, but it's definitely more than
10 years.
You are launching at a time when the economy is not so good.
Times are tough these days, but it will not stay like this forever. I
think if we effectively build our brand and gain our audience, the
money part will take care of itself.
Do you have advertisers' commitment?
There are a lot of conversations going on. We're pretty optimistic.
The presentation (launch) befitted our personality. Our logo is
younger, less serious than the others. Around the number 5 is a
shaking television. Our slogan is: "Shake Mo TV Mo." This means we
will shake your perceptions of TV. We want people to see that TV
programming is not just what ABS-CBN and GMA 7 want us to watch.
How are your programs different from the current TV fare?
I think the two networks are going after the same market. If you're
someone who's active, someone who is out of the house most of the
time, you would want variety. You don't like to be
watching "Dyesebel" every single night. We offer programs that are
fresher and more tailored for our target market, which is a little
younger than ABS' or GMA7's. Our shows are snappier, faster-paced.
The old ABC 5 catered to an older audience—between 25 and 40.
Eventually, because of the sports programming, it skewed a little to
the male gender. Our target is gender neutral.
The network recently bought a 120kw transmitter.
ABC 5 realized that one of the things that kept the network back
traditionally was the poor signal. To move ahead, Mr. Cojuangco said
he really needed to invest in a world-class transmitter and good
infrastructure. It's a brand-new transmitter from Italy. It's at par
with what other networks use.
Studio 23 appears to be targeting the same market as yours. What's
your edge?
Studio 23 has a lot of canned English programs. Our edge is a large
slate of local programming. Even our canned shows will be dubbed in
Filipino.
Are you not having difficulty getting stars for your shows, since
they are mostly under contract with the competition?
We're lucky that some established names have agreed to do shows for
us— Ryan Agoncillo, Iya Villania and Jomari Yllana, among others.
These people are committed on a per-show basis. Lucy Torres will
continue to appear on "Shall We Dance," which will now feature not
just ballroom dancing but also hip-hop and street-dancing for the
younger viewers.

"Ambulancia," "Shorts" in UK's Bite the Mango Film Festival
Richard Legaspi's "Ambulancia" and Seymour Barros Sanchez's "Shorts"
were selected for screening in the Bite the Mango Film Festival which
will run from September 19 to 25 at the National Media Museum in
Bradford, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom.
As part of the official selection, both short films are eligible for
the Golden Mango Award which will be awarded to "the film that is
considered the best contribution to the promotion of cross cultural
awareness, educating the audience about different cultures."
Festival Director Addy Rutter relayed the good news via email to both
directors, who are both part of the Katorse Writers Group, a
collective of filmmaker-writers from Ricky Lee's 14th scriptwriting
workshop. Incidentally, "Ambulancia" and "Shorts" got the first and
third prizes, respectively, in the second Viva – Pinoy Box Office
(PBO) Digitales.
Since its inauguration in 1995, Bite the Mango has been growing and
defining its identity in the world. Conceived as a festival that
would profile the work of black and Asian filmmakers in Britain, it
has quickly evolved into a celebration, through film, of cultures
around the world. At present, the film festival is at the forefront
of working with other countries and people to find the latest and
best of world cinema.
Bite the Mango will be showcasing an eclectic mix of features, shorts
and documentaries and a selection of master classes, seminars and
workshops delivered by industry professionals providing an exciting
and culturally vibrant atmosphere. The festival will again be
bringing audiences an impressive collection of the very best cinema
from around the world drawing influences from Africa, South Asia,
Central America and the Far East.
Starring Alan Paule and Nor Domingo, "Ambulancia" is a short film
which tells of a painful twist in an ambulance driver's belief that a
dying patient can be saved by running over stray animals on the
streets. Aside from the Digitales grand prize, it also won best short
narrative at the first Quisumbing-Escandor Film Festival for Health.
It is also in competition at the 32nd Open Air Filmfest Weiterstadt
in Germany, Pyongyang International Film Festival in North Korea,
International Panorama of Independent Films and Naoussa International
Film Festival in Greece, and was screened at the Asian Film Academy
Fellows' Night in South Korea, Young Cinema Night of the 2007
Cinemanila International Film Festival, and the CineVita filmfest at
the University of Sto. Tomas.
"Shorts," a comedy shot in the form of a "mockumentary," tells the
story of Richard Marquez, a young, hotshot copywriter/production
designer of one of the country's top advertising agencies, who
suddenly "snaps" or seems to have snapped as relayed by people close
to him. He seems to be doing anything to make his new shorts dirty to
the fear of everyone. The film stars Peejay Lanot, Nora Ruth Aquino,
Jhovannie Santos, John Emmanuel Bautista, and Andy Del Rosario, with
cameo appearances by award-winning actress Gina Pareño, directors
Jeffrey Jeturian and Sockie Fernandez, former Yes FM DJ Edu
Mansanas/Jobert Monteras and DZXL/UNTV/Bantay OFW host Marvin Javier.
FROM THE PHILIPPINE DAILY INQUIRER: A very indie Urian
By Bayani San Diego Jr.
Philippine Daily Inquirer
MANILA, Philippines—For the fourth straight year, independent movies
dominate the Urian awards, given by the Manunuri ng Pelikulang
Pilipino, the country's oldest critics' group.
The Manunuri, now in its 31st year, nominated only five mainstream
works: Jinggoy Estrada in "Katas ng Saudi" for Best Actor; Judy Ann
Santos in "Sakal, Sakali, Saklolo" and Lorna Tolentino in "Katas" for
Best Actress; Jose Javier Reyes' "Katas ng Saudi" for Best
Screenplay; and Liza Lorena in "Katas" for Supporting Actress.
Clean sweep
Since 2003, the Manunuri has picked indie movies for Best Film.
This year, all six nominees for Best Film are indies: Jerrold Tarog
and Ruel Dahis Antipuesto's "Confessional," Jade Castro's "Endo,"
Dante Mendoza's "Foster Child" and "Tirador," Lav Diaz's "Death in
the Land of Encantos" and Jim Libiran's "Tribu."
"It's the first time for indies to have a clean sweep of the Best
Film category," says Lito Zulueta, Manunuri member. Adds National
Artist Bienvenido Lumbera, founding member and former chair: "It's an
indication of the enthusiasm of indie directors. It's a good sign…
that the film industry is being revived by new filmmakers."
Although it can be argued that "Foster Child," produced by Seiko
Films, can fall under the mainstream category, it is directed by
Mendoza, known mainly for indie films.
"Foster" received the most nominations, along with "Tribu" and Adolf
Alix Jr.'s "Tambolista" which each got 10 nods. (But "Tambolista" is
not in the Best Film race.) "Tirador" got 9 noms; while "Endo"
and "Confessional" each has 7.
Mendoza isn't the only one who scored double nods, for Best Director
and Film ("Tirador" and "Foster"). Jiro Manio is nominated for Actor
("Tambolista") and Supporting Actor ("Foster"); and Sid Lucero is in
the race for Actor ("Selda") and Supporting Actor ("Tambolista").
Tarog has the most nominations for an individual—six (Sound, Editing,
Screenplay, Actor, Director and Film) for a single
movie, "Confessional."
Brave move
"It's a very brave move for the Manunuri," says Ronald Arguelles,
project head of Cinema One Originals, which produced "Confessional"
and "Tambolista." "I believe the critics cited the indies because
these films don't adhere to formulas."
Cinema One Originals is a digital film festival mounted by the
Filipino movie cable channel of ABS-CBN.
Two more Cinema One films received nominations: Veronica Velasco and
Pablo Biglang-awa's "Maling Akala" with three (Music, Cinematography,
Production Design) and Lawrence Fajardo's "Prinsesa" with one (Actor).
Other nominees for Supporting Actor are Publio Briones,
("Confessional"), Benjamin Fileo ("Tirador"), Alcris Galura ("Endo"),
Emilio Garcia ("Selda") and Coco Martin ("Tambolista").
Natatanging Gawad
Also vying for Supporting Actress, are Malou Crisologo ("Tribu"),
Eugene Domingo ("Foster"), Anita Linda ("Tambolista"), Ara Mina
("Selda") and Angela Ruiz ("Tirador").
Others in the Actor race: Jason Abalos ("Endo"), Jerrold Tarog
("Confessional"), Roeder Camañag ("Death in the Land of Encantos"),
Romnick Sarmenta ("Prinsesa") and OG Sacred ("Tribu").
Also nominated for Actress are Glaiza de Castro ("Still Life"), Ina
Feleo ("Endo") and Cherry Pie Picache ("Foster").
As if to emphasize indies' dominance, the recipient of this year's
Natatanging Gawad Urian is pioneering alternative filmmaker Kidlat
Tahimik.

FROM PEP.PH: Cherry Pie wins 2nd Best Actress Award in Durban IFF,
South Africa

Award-in-Durban-IFF,-South-Africa
Last year, she impressed an international jury for her portrayal of a
lesbian in Kaleldo. This year, Cherry Pie Picache once again
impressed foreigners for her portrayal of a caring mother in the film
Foster Child.
The Filipina actress won her second Best Actress Award from the
Durban International Film Fest in South Africa for her portrayal of a
woman temporarily taking care of children about to be adopted.
Brillante "Dante" Mendoza's film Foster Child also bagged the Best
Film Award in the 29th edition of the DIFF, beating the 21 other
competing films from all over the world. The Filipino film competed
with entries from France, Germany, South Africa, Taiwan, and the
United States, among others.
Direk Dante sent a text message to PEP (Philippine Entertainment
Portal) regarding this victory at 2:15 am (Manila time) on August 2.
The award for Best Film comes with a cash prize.
The acclaimed director is currently in Durban, South Africa, to field
Foster Child as one of the competition features and Tirador in the
official selection. One of the films chosen for the official
selection is Leatherheads. This football movie set in the 1920s stars
George Clooney and Renee Zellweger. The 29th Durban IFF featured 200
films from more than 95 countries from July 23 to August 3, 2008.
In the previous edition of the filmfest held annually in South
Africa, Cherry Pie was adjudged Best Actress for the movie Kaleldo
(international title: Summer Heat) "for a sustained and controlled
performance of the character of the gay sister, Jess, who despite her
apparent cultivated masculine exterior betrays a softness which can
hardly be seen but can be felt by all."
CONFESSIONAL screening at Indie Sine starting August 13
Award-winning Cinema One Originals Digital film "Confessional" will
have its special one-week theatrical run at the Robinsons Galleria
Indie Sine starting August 13. It won the Best Film in the First
Features Section of the 10th Osian's Cinefan Festival of Asian & Arab
Cinema in New Delhi last month.
Lies + Lies = Truth is the film's premise. It's about a small-time
filmmaker who's tired of the deceit in his work and relationships. Then
he stumbles upon a truth he didn't ask for as one subject decides to
confess his sins.
The Prom(ethean) Knight: Thoughts on the “Dark Knight”
August 3, 2008
The Prom(ethean) Knight: Thoughts on the “Dark Knight”
By Michael Ian Lomongo
———-
In Greek Mythology, Prometheus is the
Titan who stole fire from the Gods and was then punished by being
chained to the mountains of Caucasus, where a vulture came every knight
to feed on his liver. He is cast by different authors either as the
benefactor of mankind or as the one responsible for the evils besetting
mankind.
Yes, since childhood, we have known
Batman as a comic superhero. Perhaps the most plausible among the
superheroes, since he has no known superpowers. He’s just an extremely
wealthy guy with superb fighting skills. Plus the machinery and gadgets
to supplement those skills.
But he is, in fact, a masked vigilante.
A “freak.” Even if his intentions are noble, in essence, he operates
outside, or at least within the fringes, of society’s laws.
Bruce Wayne himself recognizes this. He too dreams of a Gotham City without
Batman. A time when superheroes and masked vigilantes would be
unnecessary. A world wherein justice truly works. Where he would simply
be Bruce Wayne.
———-
Like the Matrix Trilogy and the first two Spiderman films, the “Dark Knight”
could
be used as a film to showcase philosophical issues such as ethics and
responsibility. But unlike the Spiderman films which tended to belabor
the point with that cliché (”With great power comes great responsibility.”), the
“Dark Knight” provokes by silently
posing the question, “What do you with power/responsibility once it’s
laid upon your hands?”

PAALAM AKING BULALAKAW
(GOODBYE MY SHOOTING STAR)
This is not a film by KHAVN
Starring MERYLL SORIANO
K.
loves Ana. Then Ana went missing. But now she’s back. And so is K. The
walk through the old school. The strange encounters. The eye doctor.
The rekindled memories. Chance? Or design? What we talk about when we talk
about love are the things unsaid. The words that fail. The lovesongs in your
head. The poetry between the lines.
Jolina and Squatterpunk have nothing in common and you’d be right to think that
but you’d be also be wrong. They have one - - - Khavn. The teleserye mush of
“Gusto” comes from the same place as the apocalyptic gorepunk of Three Days of
Darkness.
The avantpop filmmaker has a flipside and a hopeless devotion to love
and lovesongs. And he wears his secret heart on his sleeve on Paalam Aking
Bulalakaw. Forget John Lloyd & Sara. Spike the senti. Bittersweeten the punch.
Love is love and loss and regret and long goodbyes all the things you want to
say but can’t.
And let’s walk and talk about love from July 30 to August 5 at Robinsons
Galleria Indiesine.

Theme Song of “Hello My Lady” (GMA 7)
ba't parang bitin pa rin
kahit ano'ng gawin
hindi pa rin makuntento
hindi pa rin
hinahanap-hanap ka
hanggang ngayon sinta
hindi pa rin masanay-sanay
sa pag-iisa
tanong mo nga sa 'kin
ano pa'ng aking gusto
ano pa bang 'di nakukuha
ano pa
sagot ko naman sa 'yo
wala na 'kong gusto
kundi paulit-ulit-ulit
na ganito
gusto kong marinig ang boses mo
gusto kong halikan ang labi mo
gusto kitang yakapin
hanggang umaga
gusto kong marinig ang buhay mo
gusto kong halikan ang puso mo
gusto kitang kasama
hanggang may umaga
PAALAM AKING BULALAKAW
Paalam aking bulalakaw,
nag-iisa sa mabituing kagabi,
pagkat kailangan ko nang dumilat
sa tawag ng umagang araw,
kailangan mang pagmasdan
ng pupungas-pungas ko pang mata
ang iyong paglisan patungo sa iba,
tiyak mang isang araw
ay mabubulag ako sa gabi-gabing pagtitig
sa langit na mabituin
at hindi na mabituin,
may kasamang barkada
at nag-iisa,
pilit naghahanap ng isang bagay nang nakalipas,
hindi maibabalik ng walang-silbi kong kamay.
GOODBYE MY SHOOTING STAR
Goodbye my shooting star,
alone on a night filled with stars,
for now I need to open my eyes
to the call of the morning sun;
even though I need to watch
with my still somnolent eyes
your leave-taking towards another;
even though, certainly, some day
I will be blinded by watching every night
a sky filled with stars
and a sky not filled with stars,
with friends
or by myself,
unwearyingly searching for some departed thing
that can never be brought back by my useless hands.

'Confessional' wins film fest award in India
By Bayani San Diego Jr.
INQUIRER.net, Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 10:49:00 07/20/2008
MANILA, Philippines--Yet another Filipino independent filmmaker wins
in an international film festival.
"Confessional," directed by Jerrold Tarog and Ruel Antipuesto, won
the Best Film in the First Features section of the 10th Osian's
Festival of Asian and Arab Cinema held in New Delhi Saturday.
"Confessional," which tells the story of an amateur documentarian who
elicits an explosive "confession" from a crooked politician, won the
most number of awards at the Cinema One Originals Digital Film
Festival last year--including Best Picture, Sound, Screenplay and
Director.
Ronald Arguelles, the film's executive producer and project head of
Cinema One Originals, relayed the news of film's Osian's triumph to
the Philippine Daily Inquirer (parent company of INQUIRER.net) early
Sunday.
"British film critic Tony Rayns is the head of the jury for the First
Features section," Arguelles said. "I thought it was only for local
audiences, but I'm happy that it was also appreciated abroad."
According to the Osian's-Cinefan website, Tony Rayns is a London-
based filmmaker, critic and festival curator. The two other jurors in
the First Features section are Hyderabad-born filmmaker Nagesh
Kukunoor and Sri Lankan-born filmmaker and journalist Vimukthi
Jayasundara.
"That the film impressed these foreign critics was unexpected," said
Arguelles.
The award also caught filmmaker Tarog by surprise.
Tarog, who attended the festival which culminated Sunday, told the
Inquirer in a text message: "At first, we didn't think the film's
culture-specific themes would resonate with [audiences from] from
other countries. But, from the wonderful comments we received after
the screening, we knew it really [connected with viewers]. It's a
great feeling."
The Osian's victory of "Confessional" comes only weeks after Jim
Libiran's "Tribu" won the Youth Jury Prize in the recently concluded
Paris Cinema International Film Festival.
The First Features category in Osian's-Cinefan mainly included
debuting film makers; "Tribu" was also in competition in that section.
The film bested entries from other Asian countries, including
noteworthy entries from India.
Tarog and Antipuesto received $5,000 and an additional Osian's
Originating Film Development fund worth $20,000 to bankroll their
next feature film.
Osian's-Cinefan also honored Filipino scriptwriter Jose F. Lacaba
with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Lacaba wrote three Lino Brocka
films--"Jaguar," "Bayan Ko" and "Orapronobis"â€"that were shown in
the Cannes International Film Festival.
With reports from Gerry Plaza, INQUIRER.net
FROM PEP.PH: "Confessional" screens at IndieSine starting August 13
Jocelyn Dimaculangan
Monday, July 14, 2008
Cinema One Originals' digital movie Confessional brought home five
major awards at the 24th Star Awards for Movies by the Philippine
Movie Press Club (PMPC) held at Henry Lee Irwin Theater in Ateneo de
Manila University last June 27.
It bagged the Digital Movie of the Year award, Digital Movie
Directors honors for its young filmmakers Jerrold Tarog and Ruel
Antipuesto, Digital Movie Editor of the Year for Pats Ranyo, Digital
Original Movie Screenplay for Ramon Ukit, and Digital Movie Sound
Engineer for Ditoy Aguila and Rudy Gonzales.
Produced and released last year, Confessional was one of the
finalists of the annual Cinema One Originals Digital Movie festival
and competition. This mockumentary has real people in the cast. It
follows Ryan Pastor, a fledgling filmmaker who goes to Cebu to
document the Sinulog Festival but then stumbles upon an unexpected
subject who will make a stunning mark in his documentary. A former
politician who decides to confess all his sins, the crimes,
corruptions and even murders he committed while in office, before
Ryan's camera. What follows is a string of unearthed secrets and
sweet lies. Thus, it has the catchphrase of the movie equation-
style: "Lies + Lies = Truth."
Being their first feature film, Tarog and Antipuesto were overwhelmed
by the success of Confessional when it won the Best Film and Star
Cinema Special Awards at the Cinema One Originals Awards Night in
November 2007 at the Renaissance Hotel Makati.
At the PMPC Star Awards, both directors extended their gratitude to
Cinema One's Channel Head Ronald Arguelles who says the recognition
of these digital films from the movie press has made the channel's
annual digital movie project and festival a potent venue for young
bloods of the new Filipino cinema. He adds: "Confessional's success
in the film awards circuit reflects that Cinema One Originals
contributes and brings a new wave of directors, new stories from
exciting screenplay writers and young film artists and actors who
will keep local filmmaking scene from dying. Cinema One Originals
hopefully aims to offer a wide variety of Filipino stories and to
detour from predictable or formulaic stories."
Following its triumph, Confessional will be screened for one week at
the Robinsons Galleria IndieSine starting August 13, 2008.
Confessional is a 2007 production of Cinema One Originals annual
movie project. The project and the channel are owned by Creative
Programs, Inc.

The 2008 Cinemalaya Congress
July 15-16, 2008 * Cultural Center of the Philippines
Theme: Spreading the News: Promoting, Distributing, and Exhibiting
Indie Films
Since its rise about five years ago, the independent film has made
significant breakthroughs in its depiction of themes usually shunned
by the commercial mainstream, in its experimentation with a wide
variety of cinematic styles associated with unique directorial
personalities, and, last but most important, in its discovery of
alternative and more liberative world views, cultures, and mores.
But while the achievements of the independent film have been toasted
by the culturati, the reception of the general public for indie films
still cannot be called overly enthusiastic. It is heartening,
therefore, to learn that lately the sincere and sustained efforts of
our committed indie filmmakers and producers have been yielding
notable results, with the exhibition of Filipino independent films as
guests or competitors in international festivals from Pusan to Cannes.
Happily too, on the local scene, independent filmmakers have
convinced a major mall in Metro Manila to screen independent films
commercially on a regular basis.
These developments are definitely a cause for celebration for
independent film artists, producers, and supporters, as well as a
source of inspiration for all young indie confreres who are seeking
ways and means to effectively promote, distribute, and exhibit their
films both here and abroad. At the same time, film scholars and
aficionados have wondered how participation in festivals, both local
and international, has affected the making of independent films,
whether positively or negatively.
To address these latest developments and issues in the independent
film sector, the 2008 Cinemalaya Congress focuses on the promotion,
distribution and exhibition of the independent film. The congress has
the following objectives:
1) To identify and evaluate the different ways of promoting,
distributing and exhibiting independent films both here and abroad;
2) To discover and propose innovative, imaginative, inexpensive, and
efficient ways of promoting, distributing, and exhibiting independent
films;
3) To assess the impact or effect of festivals and of venues and
audiences on independent filmmaking; and
4) To discover or create ways of developing new and wider audiences
for the independent film both inside and outside the Philippines.

All are cordially invited to all the activities of the Tribute to
Manuel Conde
The 2008 Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival will feature an event
that will happen for the first time in Cinemalaya – a tribute to
director-writer-actor-producer Manuel Conde (1915-1985), who made
about 40 films from 1940 to 1963. The tribute will include the
launching of the book The Cinema of Manuel Conde by Nicanor G.
Tiongson, the opening of the exhibit on the maverick director of the
Filipino cinema, and the first public screening after many decades of
Conde's films, especially the famous Genghis Khan, the first Filipino
movie to be invited to participate in an international film festival,
in this case the very prestigious Venice Film Festival of 1952. The
tribute is being organized to remember and acknowledge the
contributions to the Filipino national cinema of the
director-actor-producer who established his own film organization (MC
Productions), precisely because he wanted to do movies with an
independent spirit that studio producers would not touch.
The most important Conde films that embody the independent spirit that
is celebrated today by Cinelamaya, are the five Juan Tamad films,
namely: Si Juan Tamad, 1947, the very first MC Productions venture;
Si Juan Daldal (Anak ni Juan Tamad), 1948; the most famous of all,
Juan Tamad Goes to Congress; 1959; Juan Tamad Goes to Society, 1960;
and Si Juan Tamad at si Juan Masipag sa Pulitikang Walang-Hanggan,
1963. In these films, Conde successfully transformed the slapstick
comedy into timely social satire, using the folk pusong (trickster)
Juan Tamad as his cinematic persona in order to launch, with impact
and impunity, his tirades against the shameless excesses of "hay
sosayti" as well as his exposes on the questionable "altruism" of
American AID, and the inefficiency and corruptibility of the honorable
congressmen of Republikang Lawang-Lawa. Conde's uncommon courage in
satirizing social and political evils, his playful but insightful
revitalization of genre movies, his unflagging and absolute dedication
to artistry (shared and strengthened by his best friend and production
designer Botong Francisco), and, most of all, his passionate and
absolute commitment to his truth, definitely qualify him to be called
the "Pioneer of Independent Filmmaking in the Philippines".

Viva awards PBO Digitales 2 winners, finalists
Viva Communications, Inc. and Viva Foundation for the Arts recently
gave recognition to the top three winners and four other finalists of
the second Pinoy Box Office (PBO) Digitales Short Film Contest in
awarding ceremonies held at the Viva office in Ortigas.
Viva big bosses Tess Cruz and Vincent del Rosario awarded the
certificate of recognition and P50,000 cash prize to Richard Legaspi,
who won first prize for his short film entry "Ambulancia." Ivy
Universe Tayag Baldoza received P30,000 second prize for "Walang
Paraiso" while Seymour Barros Sanchez won P20,000 third prize
for "Shorts." Also gracing the ceremony were Viva Supervising
Producer Brenda Bayhon, Liaison Officer Gemma Cruz, and Marketing and
Advertising Services Manager Stephen Charles Garcia.
The three winning filmmakers previously represented the Philippines
in international film festivals. Sanchez, whose other film "Lababo"
(Kitchen Sink) won the grand prize of the first Digitales, competed
at the 48th International Festival of Documentary and Short Film in
Bilbao, Spain for the same short film. Baldoza, who took up
filmmaking at the Mowelfund Film Institute, participated in the 2008
Berlinale Talent Campus in Germany, and was also selected for the
Script Station, a mentorship program under Franz Rodenkirchen of the
Berlin Script House. Her other short, "Bunot" (Husk), competed at
the ninth Seoul International Film Festival Short Film Category in
South Korea.
Asian Film Academy fellow Legaspi, on the other hand,
had "Ambulancia" competing at the fifth Naoussa International Short
Film and Video Festival and 10th International Panorama of
Independent Film and Video, both in Greece, and 32nd Open Air
Filmfest Weiterstadt in Germany. It will also be exhibited at the
Pyongyang International Film Festival in North Korea and had previous
screenings at the second CineVita Film Festival, ninth Cinemanila,
and AFA Fellows Night in Busan, South Korea aside from winning the
best short narrative at the Quisumbing – Escandor Film Festival for
Health.
Cruz and del Rosario also presented the certificates of recognition
to the other finalists: Ronald Espinosa Batallones for "Isa," Rosswil
Hilario for "Kwidaw," and Patricia Lorraine Rosal for "Hiling."
Another finalist, Noriel Jarito, who directed "OFW: Bagong Bayani o
Baliw na Bayani," was then in Samar, thus failing to make it to the
awards rites.
For two years now, PBO, Viva's 24-hour movie and entertainment
channel, has been airing the winners and finalists of the digital
film competition, which provides an opportunity for all amateur and
professional filmmakers to be shown on television and to win cash
prizes at the same time. Viva is expected to launch the third
Digitales this year.
The judges for the short film competition were Lex Bonife and Jay
Altarejos, the writer-director team behind Viva Films' "Lalake sa
Parola," "Ang Lihim ni Antonio," and "Kambyo," Robert Quebral,
director of Viva's "Sex Drive" and "Co-Ed Scandal," Gil Tejada,
director of GMA 7's "Encantadia," "Bakekang," "Maging Akin Ka
Lamang," and "La Vendetta," Keith Sicat, writer/director of
independent film "Rigodon," and Benedict Mique, writer of "Till I Met
You," "Co-Ed Scandal," and "Liberated." ##

KATORSE SHORTS special screening at the CCP Little Theater, July 17,
6:15 P.M.
Due to insistent public demand, the Katorse Writers Group, a
collective of young writer-filmmakers who were part of Ricky Lee's
14th scriptwriting workshop, will be having another special screening
of their short films at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP)
Little Theater on July 17, 6:15 P.M.
Katorse Shorts, as they are more commonly known, showcase short films
with themes ranging from the romantic to the absurd to the tragic – a
program that is meant to bring to the consciousness of the Filipino
audience the short film as a form that can hold its own.
Headlining the program, which is part of the fourth Cinemalaya
Philippine Independent Film Festival, is Richard
Legaspi's "Ambulancia" (Ambulance), grand prize winner of the Viva –
Pinoy Box Office (PBO) Digitales 2 short film competition and the
best short narrative at the first Quisumbing-Escandor Film Festival
for Health. It was previously screened in competition at the fifth
Naoussa International Film Festival in Greece this year and exhibited
at the Asian Film Academy 2007 Fellows Night in South Korea and ninth
Cinemanila International Film Festival last year. It will compete
next at the 10th International Panorama of Film and Video in Patras
City, Greece and at the 32nd Open Air Filmfest Weiterstadt in Germany
and will be shown in the Informative Section of the Pyongyang
International Film Festival in North Korea.
Showing again with Legaspi's film are similar award-winning and
internationally screened shorts such as Ogi Sugatan's "Ang Kapalaran
ni Virgin Mario" (The Fate of Virgin Mario), Grace Orbon's "Dead
Letter," Seymour Barros Sanchez's "Lababo" (Kitchen Sink), John
Wong's "Manyika" (Doll), and Anna Isabelle Matutina's "Walong Linggo"
(Eight Sundays).
However, compared to its week-long Indie Sine screenings at Robinsons
Galleria, the line-up will include two new selections from the group,
Matutina's "Ika-siyam na Palapag" (Ninth Floor) and
Sanchez's "Pagbugtaw" (Waking Up), which is part of "Guimaras: Short
Films on the Oil Spill."
"Ika-siyam na Palapag" tells the story of a young woman's futile
attempt to reach the father of his unborn child while she wrestles
with the idea of abortion. It won third best short film at the 19th
Gawad CCP Para sa Alternatibong Pelikula at Bidyo and also competed
at the Creteil International Women's Film Festival in France and
Malescorto International Short Film Festival in Italy. It was also
exhibited at the Jakarta Slingshort Festival in Indonesia and 7th
Cinemanila.
Matutina's "Puwang" (Space Between), which was originally part of the
Robinsons Galleria Indie Sine line-up, will be screened instead as
part of the Cinemalaya 2006 Shorts B on July 18, 12:45 P.M. at the
CCP Silangan Hall. In addition, other Katorse short films,
namely "Blood Bank" by Pam Miras and "Panaginipan" (The Dreaming),
also by Matutina, will be shown on July 16, 12:45 P.M. at the same
venue as part of Cinemalaya 2005 Shorts.
Tickets to the screenings cost P50 to students and P100 otherwise.
For more information about the short films and the filmmakers, please

FROM PEP.PH: Paris Cinema Festival honors Filipino films and
filmmakers
Jocelyn Dimaculangan
Saturday, July 5, 2008
Boasting of "a new generation of film directors, and a [body of work]
filled with energy and audacity," the Philippines has been chosen as
the country of honor in the sixth edition of the Paris Cinema
International Film Festival. According to Jeremy Segay, program
advisor of the said film fest, out of the 280 film screenings that
will be held from July 1-12, 46 of them will come from the
Philippines.
In an interview with Variety, Mr. Segay, an expert on Asian cinema
who has assembled this year's retrospective, points out: "There was a
kind of a Filipino New Wave at the end of the 1970s with filmmakers
like Lino Brocka and Ishmael Bernal. Then for a long time afterwards
there was a black hole. It's only recently that Filipino cinema has
become rediscovered, in many ways because it has carved out a
homosexual niche."
In addition, two Filipino movies will compete against 14 other films
chosen worldwide in the feature and short film categories. These are
Jim Libiran's full-length film Tribu, which stars real-life gang
members, and Alvin Yapan's short film Rolyo, which is about the
alternative use of film reel rolls.
Two Filipino directors are given a retrospective in the 2008 Paris
CIFF: the late Joey Gosiengfiao, who is dubbed as the John Waters of
the country for his campy films, and Brillante "Dante" Mendoza whose
works employing "cinema verite" have recently been screened at the
Cannes International Film Festival. Direk Dante's films to be
screened are Masahista, Kaleldo, Manoro, Foster Child, Tirador and
Serbis while Direk Joey's films are Temptation Island, Bomba Star,
Katorse, and Underage.
There are four sections in the special program dubbed as "Country of
Honor: the Philippines," namely mainstream, indies, classics and
Cinemalaya entries.
The Cinemalaya films are Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros by
Aureaus Solito; Big Time (Mario Cornejo; Pepot Artista (Clodualdo del
Mundo, Jr.,), Donsol (Adolfo Alix), Batad: Sa Paang Palay (Benjie
Garcia), Pisay (Aureaus Solito), Endo (Jade Castro), Kadin (Adolfo
Alix).
The indies are Kubrador (Jeffrey Jeturian), Ang Babae sa Breakwater
(Mario O'Hara), Tuli (Aureaus Solito), Ang Huling Balyan ng Buhi
(Sherad Anthony Sanchez), Indio Nacional (Raya Martin), Balikbayan
Box (Ramon Mes de Guzman), Todo Todo Teros (John Torres), Serafin
Geronimo: Kriminal ng Baryo Concepcion (Lav Diaz), and Three Days of
Darkness (Khavn dela Cruz).
Mainstream movies are Dekada `70 (Chito Roño), Bridal Shower,
(Jeffrey Jeturian), Gagamboy (Erik Matti), Ploning (Dante Nico
Garcia), Caregiver (Chito Roño), and Blackout (Ato Bautista).
The classics are the aforementioned Gosiengfiao films plus Lino
Brocka's Insiang, Ishmael Bernal's Himala, Mike de Leon's Kakaba-Kaba
Ka Ba?, Peque Gallaga's Scorpio Nights, Laurice Guillen's Init sa
Magdamag, and Tikoy Aguiluz's Boatman.
Earlier tonight, July 5, the "Evening with Philippine stars" was held
at the Balzac Theater in Champ Elysees. Piolo Pascual's movie
Dekada `70 was screened back-to-back with Judy Ann Santos's Ploning
directed by Dante Nico Garcia.
Sharon Cuneta was also expected to attend the gala screening of
Caregiver along with Direk Chito.

to do before she dies. Her tasks vary from the simple to the
complicated, from the practical to the mundane, from the ordinary to
the extraordinary. In the process, she accepts the truth that even if
death is something personal, dying never is.

FULL-LENGTH
100 by Chris Martinez is about a stern, uptight and exacting woman
with a terminal illness who tries to accomplish a list of 100 things
to do before she dies. Her tasks vary from the simple to the
complicated, from the practical to the mundane, from the ordinary to
the extraordinary. In the process, she accepts the truth that even if
death is something personal, dying never is.

BABY ANGELO by Joel Ruiz and Abi Aquino centers on an investigation
that ensues when an aborted fetus is found in the dumpster of a
run-down apartment complex. The lives of the tenants—a reclusive old
man with curious ramblings, a landlord with overzealous thirst for
justice and a young couple whose past threatens to unravel their
marriage—are suddenly exposed in the hunt for the perpetrator of the
baby's death.

regains back his humanity by giving violin lessons to a child of the
slums. In turn, the child, through the instrument, is able to get

hired by illegal loggers to smuggle wood from the mountains of
Mindoro, as they embark on a dangerous journey to deliver the goods to

CONCERTO by Paul Alexander Morales is about how, in the last part of
World War II, a special piano concert is held in the forests of Davao.
In these boondocks, a displaced Filipino family becomes acquainted
with a group of Japanese officers, similarly camped nearby. Based on
true stories from the director's family, Concerto celebrates a family
whose reverence for life, expressed through their love of music and
friendship, can survive even war, and shows how beauty and compassion
can grow in even the harshest of situations.

MY FAKE AMERICAN ACCENT by Onnah Valera and Ned Trespeces is a
slice-of-life workplace comedy following the lives of technical
support call center agents in the span of six months. Speaking with a

comedy is an inside look into the maddening, sleep-deprived,
caffeine-fuelled lives of those who ply their trade in the call center
industry.

being Negrosanon and being Filipino. It follows the flirtation between
Jacko and Cassie, two Negrenses who grew up in Bacolod, and whose
lives revolve around food. The film will be shot on location in Negros
Occidental and will be primarily in Hiligaynon, the language spoken in
that region.

The Cinemalaya 2008 Competition Films

BOSES (VOICES) by Ellen Ongkeko-Marfil is the story of a musician, who
regains back his humanity by giving violin lessons to a child of the
slums. In turn, the child, through the instrument, is able to get

is a story of a friendship founded on the sublime beauty of music.

hired by illegal loggers to smuggle wood from the mountains of
Mindoro, as they embark on a dangerous journey to deliver the goods to

Speaking with a
fake American accent is a prerequisite for the job. This ensemble
comedy is an inside look into the maddening, sleep-deprived,
caffeine-fuelled lives of those who ply their trade in the call center
industry.

NAMETS by Emilio "Jay" Abello is a colorful celebration of food as
well as love, and the love of food above all, which is central to
being Negrosanon and being Filipino. It follows the flirtation between
Jacko and Cassie, two Negrenses who grew up in Bacolod, and whose
lives revolve around food. The film will be shot on location in Negros
Occidental and will be primarily in Hiligaynon, the language spoken in
that region.

RANCHERO by Michael Christian Cardoz is the story of convicts who
serve a special role inside the jail - they prepare the meals
everyday. But in a jail where some inmates see no reason to continue
living, what is the role of food? Is the food's role to extend life or
