Hello everybody,
I'm new to this group. My name is Chiara and I'm from Italy. I came
across the name Franchot Tone in a fiction book: it was said that
one character looked like him. I had never heard of him, so I
googled his name to see his face. Then I read something about him
and became fascinated with his story. Now I'm eager to read the
biography by Ms. Burks (I've emailed you once, Lisa, but got no
reply: maybe you don't check the FranchotTone.com email address very
often?). Sadly, there are only a few movies with Tone available on
DVD in Italy: I have managed to get some from a friend through
trading, they are "Today we live", "Bombshell", "The Lives of a
Bengal Lancer", "Mutiny on the Bounty" and "Five Graves to Cairo".
He had some others too, but I think I picked the more quality ones.
Indeed, they're all really good movies, except maybe "Today we
live", which is a bit unlogical in some moments. "Bombshell" was
hilarious, I laughed a lot, what a pity Franchot hasn't a very big
part in it. "Bounty" is a classic, and "Five Graves to Cairo" has a
brilliant plot (it's B.Wilder, after all!). Probably, however, the
most pleasant surprise was "The Lives...": the dialogues between
Tone and Cooper were really nice and witty, and the movie wasn't
just adventure, but humor as well.
I would like to see more movies of him with Joan Crawford! Which
ones do you recommend? Which are your personal favourites?
He was a really really handsome man with a lot of appeal, and also,
from what I heard, really cultivated. I collected some pictures on
the Internet (Google, eBay, various sites...), and if you want me to
post them here, I would when I have time. The Group doesn't seem
really active, but I'll drop by every once in a while.
Bye
Chiara
