In 1977, Christopher Lloyd starred in the Tony nominated musical
revival of "Happy End", alongside Meryl Streep. While you can check
out promotional stills of the production at www.christopherlloyd.net,
you can now see a clip of the showtune "Bilbao Song" performed by
Lloyd and several cast members on the 1977 Tony Awards telecast at

As for the crutches you will notice on Lloyd, he tore ligaments in
his right knee during a preview performance of "Happy End". As a
result, Lloyd's understudy Bob Gunton took over on opening night of
the play while Lloyd underwent surgery and recuperated in the
hospital. However, Gunton came down with the measles shortly after
opening night and Lloyd resumed the role...in crutches. He actually
went out of his way to use historically accurate crutches (the play
takes place in the 1920s) while onstage and you can see them in the
clip. The play had some lines inserted to explain the character's
crutches. Lloyd's character first appears onstage after having
killed the leader of the rival gang. His character originally came
in with a black eye, but the script was altered to include a leg
injury to explain the crutches' presence. Enjoy the clip!
