Here's something that's worth forwarding: I recently came across one of the
draft's to the first "Back to the Future" movie. It was the part where Doc tells
Marty about the first time he discovered time travel. The part about him hanging
the clock over the toilet seat it there as is him slipping and banging his head
on the sink, the flux capacitor, about back when the Twin Pines (and later Lone
Pine) Mall was all farm land as far as the eye could see, that Old Man Peabody
had this crazy idea about breeding pine trees.
However, what was left out was when Doc said "Things were simple in those days.
Back then when you wanted to call for some information, the one thing you didn't
have to worry about was to press '1' for English."
"Not like nowadays." said Marty, "Blame the Mexicans"
But when Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale presented the idea, Universal Studios
flinched. "You've got to get that line out of the film." they said, "There might
be a lawsuit from the anti-defamation league and other organizations."
Michael J. Fox also had a hand in it. He said he would only play Marty McFly if
he did have to say "Blame the Mexicans". He felt that such a line would be an
attack on the Mexican immigrants being an immigrant himself (although from
Canada).
Since they just got Fox back to do "Back to the Future" after they canned Eric
Stoltz and they didn't want him back, both Bob's agreed. Ergo, after Doc says
".he had this crazy idea about breeding pine trees." You hear Marty say "Hey
Doc, this is heavy duty stuff."
That's too bad. Could you imagine Christopher Lloyd doing his Doc Brown role
saying "Things were simple in those days. Back then when you wanted to call for
some information, the one thing you didn't have to worry about was to press '1'
for English."? People would be rolling over in the aisles laughing.
Please read and forward it to as many people as you can..
