Rita will star in a new documentary about Liverpool Football (what we in America
soccer).

In a recent email, Rita said, "The documentary was something I was asked to do
when I went to Liverpool to receive my Honorary Fellowship. It is a short about
Liverpool Football Club's Champions League final in Istanbul in 2005 -- about
how people felt watching the penalty shootout. It was one of the most exciting
games ever! (I would say that, wouldn't I?!)"

"Its title is FIFTEEN MINUTES THAT SHOOK THE WORLD. It is to raise awareness
for Jamie Carragher's - a Liverpool player - young peoples' charity 'The 23
Foundation'."

Speaking of "Telstar", it's being screened (appropriately) at London's Ace Cafe
on Sunday, 27 September, at 3 p.m. Details here:

http://www.ace-cafe-london.com/History.aspx

Needless to say, the Ace figures prominently in Rita T.'s career, as "The
Leather Boys" was set there.

The new movie "Telstar" is being released on Region 2 DVD later this month.

"A music-infused drama about Joe Meek, the flamboyantly gay, tone deaf,
songwriter-producer behind the 60s hits 'Have I the Right', 'Just Like Eddie',
'Johnny Remember Me', and 'Telstar'."

Rita says, "My role is a tiny cameo, and I mean tiny! I did it because it was
Nick Moran's first film and we have worked together and kept in touch over the
years so it was a fun thing to do."

A region 1 release is planned, but no word yet on a release date.

In May 2002, the BBC broadcast three 90-minute mysteries on consecutive weeks,
each featuring Amanda Burton playing the role of crown prosecutor Helen West,
the heroine of several mystery novels written by Frances Fyfield.

Rita played a role in the second episode. Heretofore these episodes have been
unavailable (though I obtained a dodgy copy from someone in Germany).

These three episodes are now receiving an official DVD release by Acorn Media,
on 18 Aug 2009.

Curiously, they're being released on Region 1 NTSC discs in America, even though
this series is relatively unknown in the USA. No word yet on a Region 2 PAL
release.

I'd like to let you know about two video clips that you might like to view on
YouTube, if you've got high-speed broadband internet capability.

First, someone has uploaded a video clip of celebrities arriving at Her
Majesty's Theatre for the Dora Bryan Tribute that was held on 31 May 2009. Rita
appears near the beginning of the clip. Dora herself can be seen near the end
of the clip.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aX8zZoRtR3E

Second, I've uploaded a clip of highlights from the Variety Club Awards For
1961, held on 13 Mar 1962 at the Savoy Hotel, London. Rita, Helen Shapiro,
Albert Finney, Cliff Richard, Deborah Kerr and others can be seen in the clip.
(Rita shared the award with singer Helen Shapiro for the Most Promising Newcomer
of 1961 -- in Rita's case, for her performance in "A Taste Of Honey".)

Kind regards,
Robert

P.S. -- Just had a note from Rita, who said, "I had a lovely lunch with Lynn
last week it was so wonderful to see her she was here for just a few days and in
good spirits."

Hi everyone,

As you may recall, the British Film Institute recently released Rita's 1969 film
"The Bed Sitting Room" on DVD and Blu-ray.

In connection with this release, the BFI Southbank hosted a screening of "The
Bed Sitting Room" on 21 May 2009, with Rita and director Richard Lester as
guests.

I haven't personally received any firsthand accounts from anyone who attended
the BFI screening, so I lifted the following account from an attendee who wrote
about it in his blog, at
http://stewarthomesociety.org/blog/

-- blog info begins --

"During the panel discussion after the screening, Lester said that while he had
no issues with the cast when making the film, their respective agents proved
rather argumentative about billings. His means of resolving this problem was to
list the actors by height, from shortest to tallest, as can be seen in the
introductory credits -- a device that fortuitously provides Rita with top
billing."

"Lester dominated the panel discussion although he'd been joined for it by Rita
Tushingham, with BFI curators Will Fowler and Vic Pratt moderating. Lester mixed
some entertaining anecdotes with an unbelievably superficial take on events in
Paris in May 1968. He seemed to view the entire year - and in particular the
occupations movement in France - as a bit of a downer, largely because these
political events disrupted his travel plans. Unfortunately Rita didn't get to
say much, but she's an old pro and having known Lester for around forty-five
years appeared both used to and unflustered by his habit of hogging the
conversation."

"Tushingham is in incredibly good shape for a 67 year-old, and while she now
appears a little older than in her 1960s prime, her distinctive looks are still
very much with her. Afterwards in the corridor as I was making my way towards
the private party, I was nearly knocked over by a group of men who were mobbing
Rita for autographs. I haven't seen a celebrity creating that amount of havoc at
the BFI since Jane Fonda was in the building signing copies of her autobiography
back in 2006."

-- blog info ends --

I mentioned this blog item to Rita, including the author's opinion that Richard
Lester dominated the conversation, and she replied, "I was very happy with the
Q&A at the BFI, I have been trying to get Richard to attend events and was
delighted that he agreed to come to the evening so therefore I was happy for him
to take the floor, hopefully it has encouraged him to attend other events , he
has such a following here and has so much to say about film."

Rita also said, "I played a small part in the Dora Bryan tribute at Her
Majesty's Theatre, we did not get to talk to her as she is very frail and
confused but I heard she loved the evening, she has given so much to the
profession."

I hadn't heard about this tribute to Dora Bryan, so I searched the Internet to
find more info. Here is some relevant info that I found:

-- internet info begins --

There was a tribute to Dora Bryan at Her Majesty's Theatre, London, on 31 May
2009. Dora, who co-starred with Rita in Rita's first film, 'A Taste Of Honey'
(1961) is now 85 years old, wheelchair-bound, and lives in a council-funded room
in a nursing home in Hove, near Brighton. "She is extremely frail and hardly
eating at all," said tribute organizer Tony Hardman.

The show opened with Zoë Tyler leading the cast in their rendition of a classic
from one of Dora's many musical turns, 'Hello Dolly'. Comedian Johnny Casson,
West End Star Rosemary Ashe, and new face of musical theatre Mark Joseph then
took to the stage, followed by a performance from Anita Harris.

The second act kicked off with Sir Cliff Richard performing an intimate solo
set. (Cliff has not forgotten how at the height of her popularity in 1967, Dora
played his mum in a best-forgotten piece of screen propaganda, 'Two A Penny',
produced by evangelist Billy Graham.)

Rita Tushingham appeared to reminisce on her starring role alongside Dora in the
movie followed by the keyboardist Bobby Crush and comedienne Mia Carla. Jill
Martin delivered a few anecdotes about her time working with Dora before the all
star finale, 'Before the Parade Passes By', once again lead by Zoë Tyler,
supported by the GSA students and the E3 dancers.

-- internet info ends --

Cheers,
Robert

How interesting that you would be leading a walk on the same day and in the same area. Is this just a coincidence, or is there a reason that multiple fund-raising walks would be occurring at the same time and place?

A heads-up to our members in the UK --

Rita is planning to participate in a fund-raising walk for the benefit of the Royal Marsden Hospital. This is the hospital that treated Rita's younger daughter Aisha for breast cancer a couple of years ago.

Raising awareness of breast cancer in young women is an important issue to Rita. She is spreading the word about the upcoming walk, and hopes that perhaps some of the members of our fan club might wish to participate.

The walk will be outside of London at a place called Beachy Head on the 24th of May, a Sunday.

I'll pass along further information as it becomes available.

Kind regards,
Robert

A heads-up to our members in the UK --

Rita is planning to participate in a fund-raising walk for the benefit of the
Royal Marsden Hospital. This is the hospital that treated Rita's younger
daughter Aisha for breast cancer a couple of years ago.

Raising awareness of breast cancer in young women is an important issue to Rita.
She is spreading the word about the upcoming walk, and hopes that perhaps some
of the members of our fan club might wish to participate.

The walk will be outside of London at a place called Beachy Head on the 24th of
May, a Sunday.

I'll pass along further information as it becomes available.

Kind regards,
Robert

In a recent email, Rita said,

"The Liverpool John Moores University asked me a few months ago if I would be
willing to accept an Honorary Fellowship Of the University, I was of course
thrilled to accept. It had to be confidential until this week when the list will
be released. The ceremony will be on the 21st of July at Liverpool's Anglican
Cathedral."

Our congratulations to Rita!

Thanks, Laurie. "Diamonds For Breakfast" was Marcello Mastroianni's first
English film.

Rita wears a curly black wig in the film -- not really a 'look' that suits her,
in my humble opinion.

Thanks for posting!

Rita sometimes spends the weekend at her flat in Brighton. As her birthday falls on a Saturday this year, I was afraid that she might be in Brighton that day, so I had our flowers delivered today (Wednesday).

I've never heard of Rita being awarded any such awards. Nor Richard Lester.

If anyone has knowledge to the contrary, I'd love to hear it.

Robert

Those of you in the London area have an opportunity to see Rita in person. In a
recent email, Rita mentioned that she would be attending a screening at the BFI:

I looked for tickets on the BFI website, but have not yet found a listing for
this event. Perhaps they'll list it in a couple of weeks.

Cheers,
Robert
