I finally bit the bullet and upgraded my video equipment to permit
playing UK-PAL formatted VHS tapes and Region 2 DVDs.
I now have the Region 2 BFI-released DVD of "A Taste Of Honey", and
the bonus features are excellent.
In addition to the often hilarious commentary between Rita and Dora
Bryan "The role was a perfect fit for me (Dora), except that I'm not
a slut. REALLY, I'M NOT A SLUT! (Rita gagging with laughter)", there
is a video essay by cinematographer Walter Lassaly, with quite a
fascinating description of the tricks of lighting and camera
necessary for some shots.
Disappointingly, Murray Melvin was not present when Rita and Dora
recorded their joint commentary. It's obvious that his comments were
recorded at another time, and end up being interspersed into the
commentary track when Rita and Dora occasionally run out of steam.
Murray's comments have little to do with the film, though,
concentrating as they do on the prior efforts of Joan Littlewood to
hone ATOH as a stage play.
I don't have a DVD recorder, but could record the movie plus
commentary & subtitles onto a VHS tape, if this would be of interest
to anyone.
