The Smashing Time event on Friday here in London was really fun.
The National Film Theatre is on the South Bank of the River Thames,
and on this warm evening there was a whole Vespa scooter club parked
outside the theatre. There was also a group of women were dressed
in Mary Quant-type dresses. As I arrived, Rita and George Melly were
looking at the scooters, but they soon disappeared.

The director of Smashing Time, Desmond Davis, introduced the film,
talking about the difficulties of actually getting it made and
distributed. After the screening, Desmond, Rita and George told
some anecdotes about the making of the film. None of them had seen
it on a big screen since the Premier in 1967. Rita had brought her
youngest daughter along.

One day at the age of 10 (this would be 1974), I feigned illness to
stay at home and watch Smashing Time on television. I read about it
in the TV listings magazine and decided I had to see it. Don't ask
me why, I was 10! Anyway, this was the first time I had seen it
since, and I remembered a lot of the scenes and even lines of
dialogue and songs.

As it happens, I see Rita Tushingham quite often. She must live
near where I work, and I often see her out shopping.
